Garr Reynolds began by stating that all too often, we overcomplicate our sides by making them to busy with information. Slides shouldn’t be “the star of the show” as he says but provide graphics and some text to support the speaker.
Reynolds continues his previous point by explaining that “the best slides are the ones with no text at all.” Busy slides with a ton of text and bullets bore the audience and take away from what the speakers presenting.
Many times we’re caught up on making incredibly elaborate and complex animations and effects. This will often times appear unprofessional and take away from what is being presented.
Photos help gain the attention of the audience and can draw them closer to what your presented. Reynolds suggested the use of high resolution photos for a more professional feel and to avoid more basic photos such as clip art photos.
Be unique, do not use pre-made templates. Theme is however a big part of a proper PowerPoint and should be chosen carefully. Reynolds suggested making your own custom templates that taylor to the theme of the presentation.
Displaying graphical data with the correct chart is crucial. Make the charts relevant and clear so the audience can understand the data you’re presenting.
Color can grab attention well and keep the audience’s attentive during you’re presentation. Apply cool and warm colors where relevant.
Reynolds described fonts as “displaying subtle messages.” Make sure the font you choose can be easily ready and doesn’t drift in with any backgrounds or pictures you may have. Reynolds suggested the San-Serif fonts for PowerPoint presentations.
Brief video or audio clips can help prove your point and draw in audience attention. Reynolds explained that in a professional environment you are to never use corny sound effect clips.
