Learning Object Repository (Introduction)

  1. A Learning Object Repository is a collection of learning objects and the associated metadata.   A learning object repository is a kind of digital library.   A Learning Object Repository is storing content/assets/resources as well as their metadata record. ( EdTechPost Glossary )
  2. An LOR allows users to create, share and manage learning resources.    A Learning Object Repository is a warehouse for storing digital content for educational purposes.    The content stored could be as simple as a single word document or it could be a set of related web pages with embedded media files and JavaScript that comprise a module, chapter or entire course.
  3. An LOR provides a hub for users to find, use, reuse and repurpose learning materials that already exist.    It is a single, central location for users across different courses, departments and organizations to search and find materials to support teaching and learning.    For users building out lessons, modules, and entire courses, having a source to find resources used by others can mean the difference between making small changes to localize or update the content and being forced to expend great effort to recreate content from scratch.
  4. There are several key differences between an LOR and shared file storage areas such as those often provided within most Learning Management Systems (LMS)   Learning Object Repositories have the capability to package files into meaningful and complete units of learning.    In a shared files storage area, the different files are dissociated pieces of information without formal relationships tying them together in a congruent and re-usable manner.

The definition of a Learning Object may vary by source, but for the purposes of most Learning Object Repository discussions, it is acceptable to define learning objects as “any digital resource that can be reused to support learning”   Within the context of the Learning Object Repository, we generally assume that the resource has metadata attached or packaged with the resource. The metadata helps make the resource searchable and reusable.   Metadata is information such as title, description and keywords provided by content creators describing materials they put into a Learning Object Repository. Metadata is a key term used when talking about Learning Object Repositories.

  8. We’ve simplified the metadata experience using custom views and automatic metadata population through templates. Customizing metadata field names and setting up specific vocabularies for tagging and searching makes metadata meaningful for organizations.

Full text indexing support allows for parsing and searching full documents and web files to ensure users can find relevant resources. Additional refinements for searching learning objects allow clients to choose specific options, such as rating, object status, learning standard, publish date, and object type. These flexible features empower clients to retrieve objects that are relevant to them.
