This document provides directions for students to summarize a book or article they have read. Students are asked to note anything surprising they encounter and answer two questions about it: why it surprised them and what it suggests. The directions also include a prompt to write a short summary of anything interesting or surprising found, including the page number and answers to the two questions.

Directions: As you read, look for things that surprise you. When you find something, ask yourself these questions:
1. Why did this surprise me?
2. What does this suggest?
