Ecology
Chapter 34
Do Now 4/26/12
• List all the things you observe in the ecosystem below
Now…
• In your notebooks, divide your list into two
categories:
1. Living things
2. Non-living things
3. Both?
What was living? What is non-living?
Both?
Do Now
• Take out your list of “living, non living and
both” things.
Biotic and Abiotic Factors
• We are going to watch a video about Biotic and Abiotic
Factors in an environment. As you watch write 1-2
sentences about what they are and how they are related.
Let’s watch!
Biotic Factors
• Bio = _________
• Biotic Factors = anything in an environment that
influences/interacts with an organism that is LIVING
Abiotic Factors
• “A” = ____ “bio” = _________
• Abiotic Factors = anything in an environment that
influences/interacts w/ an organism that’s NON-LIVING
Both?
• Mixtures of the two
• Examples
• Mud (abiotic) may contain bacteria (biotic) mixed in
• Pond water (abiotic) has microorganisms (biotic)
that we can’t see
Do Now 5/3/12
• What factors (things) influence or interact
with an organism in its environment?
Ecology
• Eco = _________ -ology = _________
• Ecology = the study of organisms, their environment and
how they are interrelated (inter = ________)
Levels of Organization
• Smallest  Largest
• Species (Individual)
• Population
• Community
• Ecosystem
• Biome
• Biosphere
Do Now 5/10/11
• Describe how the abiotic and biotic factors are related
in this picture. Give at least 3 specific examples 
Species
• Similar organisms that can reproduce with
each other
Population
• Group of individuals of the same species, they live in the
same area
Community
• Different populations (species) living in a similar area
Ecosystem
• A community, the environment and their interactions
Biome
• Ecosystems (communities + environment) with
similar climates and organisms
Biosphere
• Bio = ______ Sphere = _______
• Earth!
• The entire planet…all living (biotic) and non-living
(abiotic) environments
Activity
• Draw a circle and label it “Me”. Then draw five
concentric circles and label each of them with the
appropriate level of organization. Describe your
population, community, etc.
Activity
• Each of you will be assigned a different Biome:
• Tundra, Deciduous forest, Coniferous
Forest, Grassland, Shrubland, Rainforest, Desert
• For each Biome, make an Informational Poster that
includes the following:
• A description of the Biome, or any facts about it
• Abiotic Factors: describe the weather, climate, and other
non-living environments/factors
• Biotic Factors: describe the animal life, plant life and
examples
Energy in Ecosystems
• Primary Producers: aka Autotrophs
• Use solar (sun) or chemical energy to make “food”
• Photosynthesis: use sunlight to make energy
• Algae and plants
• Chemosynthesis: use chemicals from earth to make
energy (without sunlight)
• Some bacteria, in hydrothermal vents
• Full of energy  used by other organism
Energy in Ecosystems
• Consumers: aka Heterotrophs
• Get energy and nutrients from other organisms
• Different types:
1. Carnivores
2. Scavengers
3. Decomposers
4. Detritivores
5. Herbivores
6. Omnivores
Activity
• Choose a type of consumer
• Describe what that type of consumer eats
• Give at least 3 examples of that consumer
• Draw a picture of an example of that consumer
• Extra Credit! Come up with a fun way to remember
what that consumer eats
