2. Bibliothèque nationale de France or the national Library of
France, is located in Paris. It is intended to be the
repository of all that is published in France.
3. The National Library of
France is one of the
oldest in Europe. The
Royal Library existed in
the Louvre under Charles
V (ruled 1364-1380),
and had 1,200
manuscripts. Over the
time, almost nothing was
left of this collection, so
that Louis XI was forced
to begin the creation of
the new book storage
from scratch. Francis I
ordered a copy of each
book printed in France
to deliver to the library,
and in 1544 moved the
whole assembly of the
Louvre to Fontainebleau.
4. In the XVII century the
library was brought back
to Paris, and in 1622 the
first catalog was
published. Louis XIV made
it a public library, opening
it to public access. Its
current name the library
received by the decision
of the Convent during the
French Revolution. In the
XIX century thanks to
the efforts of Leopold-
Victor Delisle the
department of manuscripts
significantly expanded.
5. Nowadays the Fund volume
of this library is 31 million
books (14 million items).
Over 1.3 million people visit
the library every year.
The budget of the National
Library of France is € 254
million. 2651 employees
work in the library. It’s
real huge library, isn’t it?
