1. Plan and Preparation
1.1. State your purpose: what do you want to achieve?
1.2. Consider the audience: who are you presenting to?
1.3. Search for information: what facts (etc.) can support your points and provide credibility?
2. Organization
2.1. Brainstorm arguments: what are your ideas?
2.2. Draft: organize your ideas logically in a text.
2.3. Summarize: oral presentations usually have a time limit.
2.4. Review: eliminate mistakes and unnecessary information.
2.5. Prepare visual aids: slides, transparences, handouts and figures help the explanation. When
making slides:
2.5.1. Write on the slides only topics that will make you remember your point;
2.5.2. Do not write much text; be concise;
2.5.3. Attention to the size of the letter;
2.5.4. Use figures, charts, tables and other elements that call the audience’s attention;
2.5.5. Do not use many effects in the slides;
2.5.6. Do not use very strong or very light colors in the slides; be discreet;
2.5.7. Prepare the slides as if they were an outline;
2.5.8. Divide the content into sections, always referring back to its title.
3. Practice
3.1. Understanding the content is better than only memorizing;
3.2. Ask somebody to watch you rehearsal and take in consideration his/her suggestions.
4. Presentation
4.1. Remember you have the control of what you are presenting;
4.2. Speak in a good pace, not too slow or too fast, and watch your language;
4.3. Watch for your tone of voice so that everybody can listen;
4.4. Use your body to explain, but be cautious so that you do not call more attention than your
presentation;
4.5. Interaction with the audience enhances understanding and interest;
4.6. Do not read your notes or slides, speak;
2. 4.7. Try to act spontaneously, but without turning your presentation into a comedy show;
4.8. Be simple in your explanations, but do not underestimate your content or your audience;
4.9. Conclude your presentation and thank the audience.
