Chapter 2 I. Individual and Multicultural Differences A. Psychological Study of Human Differences 1. Early Work- emphasized individual traits, such as intelligence, memory, and various personality traits. a. Developed precise testing instruments and corresponding theoretical and mathematical formula used to quantify various traits b. Measuring individual differences has expanded to form another area of study, psychometrics 2. During the first 80 years of the discipline’s existence, psychologists were not active in cross-cultural or multicultural research. 3. Psychologists may have been slow to expand their focus to include sociocultural influences, but once the expansion occurred in the 1960s and 1970s the field has moved rapidly to recognize cultural and individual differences. 4. The study of individual differences began in psychology with the aim of applying research in the areas of education, industry, and therapy. During the 1970s and 1980s psychologists became quickly and intensely interested in cross-cultural and multicultural research. B. Assumptions Regarding Average and Normal 1. NORMAL a. The term normal is less precise in that it does not have a statistical definition. b. We frame normal in personal terms, based on our life experiences (1) As childrennormal is often characterized by familiar, familial, and local customs. (2) As we get older and our experiences broaden, we learn to appreciate a wide range of accepted thoughts and behaviors as normal within our society. (3) We also realize with age that what is normal is changing. e.g., American male with an earring. 4. ABNORMAL a. In addition to developing a sense of normal, we may also develop a sense of abnormal. (1) It is easy to begin to dichotomize these terms such that thoughts or behaviors are either normal or abnormal: e.g., stranger approaches; that person is either normal (and I’m comfortable) or abnormal (and I’m on guard and suspicious). (2) This perspective doesn’t allow for thoughts or behaviors to simply be different. b. It is important to be reminded to WATCH OUR ASSUMPTIONS. C. Closer Analysis of the Aging Population 1. It is also important to analyze data beyond the summary statements of the large group in order to find trends and differences among individuals and subgroups. 2. Consider the finding by the U.S. Census Bureau (2008) that of the 35 million Americans 65 years or older in 2005, 56.6% were married. a. A closer look at the data reveals important yet hidden information in these figures. b. Of the 15 million males 73.3% were married and only 13.1% were widowed. Of the 20 million females 43.8% were married and 42.5% were widowed. c. By exploring the data with gender as the focus it becomes clear that the population 65 years and older in 2006 was .

Yet few researchers ask how these bodily differences are constructed. Full text · TranslateFull text · Headnote Many feminist scholars argue that the seeming naturalness of gender differences, particularly bodily difference, underlies gender inequality. Yet few researchers ask how these bodily differences are constructed. Through semistructured observation in five preschool classrooms, I examine one way that everyday movements, comportment, and use of physical space become gendered. I find that the hidden school curriculum that controls children's bodily practices in order to shape them cognitively serves another purpose as well. This hidden curriculum also turns children who are similar in bodily comportment, movement, and practice into girls and boys-children whose bodily practices differ. I identify five sets of practices that create these differences: dressing up, permitting relaxed behaviors or requiring formal behaviors, controlling voices, verbal and physical instructions regarding children's bodies by teachers, and physical interactions among children. This hidden curriculum that (partially) creates bodily differences between the genders also makes these physical differences appear and feel natural. Social science research about bodies often focuses on women's bodies, particularly the parts of women's bodies that are most explicitly different from men's-their reproductive capacities and sexuality (E. Martin 1987; K. Martin 1996; but see Connell 1987, 1995). Men and women in the United States also hold and move their bodies differently (Birdwhistell 1970; Henley 1977; Young 1990); these differences are sometimes related to sexuality (Haug 1987) and sometimes not. On the whole, men and women sit, stand, gesture, walk, and throw differently. Generally, women's bodies are confined, their movements restricted. For example, women take smaller steps than men, sit in closed positions (arms and legs crossed across the body), take up less physical space than men, do not step, twist, or throw from the shoulder when throwing a ball, and are generally tentative when using their bodies (Birdwhistell 1970; Henley 1977; Young 1990). Some of these differences, particularly differences in motor skills (e.g., jumping, running, throwing) are seen in early childhood (Thomas and French 1985).1 Of course, within gender, we may find individual differences, differences based on race, class, and sexuality, and differences based on size and shape of body. A survey of Esther Thelen's career reveals a trajectory from early work on simple movements like stepping, to the study of goal-directed reaching, to work on the embodiment of cognition, and, ultimately, to a grand theory of development--dynamic systems theory. Four central concepts emerged during her career: (1) a new emphasis on time; (2) the proposal that behavior is softly assembled from the interaction of multiple subsystems; (3) the embodiment of perception, action, and cognition; and (4) a new respect for individuality. Esther Thelen communicated these ideas to scientists and practitioners alike, so the ultimate benefactors of her work were children. Child Development traditionally publishes the Presi- dential Address presented at the biennial meetings of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD). Analyze the physical and cognitive changes that occur during late adulthood. Adulthood and Late Adulthood Introduction The last module began an examination of adulthood. This module will finish the study of adulthood and begin a look at late adulthood. Psychosocial Development in Adulthood Erikson's seventh stage of generativity vs. stagnation occurs during this stage. Being generative means truly caring about the next generation (e.g., being a parent, teacher, coach, or conservationist) (Boeree, 2006b). The idea of a mid-life crisis has been a popular notion since the 1970s (see Berger's description of Levinson's research on page 459), but very little evidence for it exists. Modern personality theorists have backed off the word crisis, which implies a do-or-die decision point, and instead have started using terms like marker events, turning points, or passages (Sheehy, 1976). Abraham Maslow created another prominent theory of personality development (examine his five stages of the hierarchy of needs in Berger, 2010, Figure 13.1, p. 457). The lowest level, physiological needs, must be satisfied first, followed by the others in ascending order. Because people spend so much time satisfying the four lowest needs, very few reach the highest stage of self-actualization, where people live up to their potential; at one point, Maslow estimated the percentage of self-actualizers to be around 2% (Boeree, 2006a). Numerous longitudinal studies have shown evidence of considerable stability and continuity in personality across the adult years (see Berger's discussion of Costa and McCrae's research). Robert Havighurst (cited in Newman & Newman, 2010) states that adults in their 20s and 30s must face four developmental tasks. Tasks 1 and 2, marriage and childbearing, are affected by societal expectations (called the social clock). The probability of divorce hits its peak 2 to 4 years after marriage. Qualities for a successful marriage include similarity in personal characteristics, trust, sensitivity, and adjustment (including a mutually satisfying sexual relationship, economic factors, sleep patterns, food patterns, and toilet habits) (Kimmel, cited in Newman & Newman, 2010). Task 3 involves work, and includes four components: having technical skills, handling authority relationships, coping with unique demands of the job, and establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Task 4 involves establishing a lifestyle that is compatible for both spouses (as well as dealing with constraints placed on the marriage by the children) (Newman & Newman, 2010). For adults in their 40s and 50s, Havighurst (cited in Newman and Newman, 2010) discusses three crucial developmental tasks.
