Improving Reading Comprehension by Using Media Literacy Activities By Renee Hobbs Some literacy educators still hold to the idea that audiovisual media and digital technologies are the enemies of print culture, but a growing number of educators are exploring the synergistic relationship between different forms of reading that occur when the concept of text is expanded to include images, graphic design, multimodality, moving image media, and online content. At home, parents cultivate children's understanding of story structure by engaging in activities that involve children's re-telling of books, cartoons, games, and short films. They pause children's videos to ask questions, comment on action and predict what will happen next. Such practices cultivate viewing as a cognitively active process, a concept that was first articulated in the 1970s but continues to be more deeply appreciated with the rise of YouTube culture, where the distinction between authors and audiences is diminished. During the elementary grades, teachers use media literacy competencies when reading children's picturebooks, calling attention to when the words of a story and the image of the story conflict or deliver different messages. Active "reading" of picture books is a practice that foregrounds the meaning-making process and elevates reading comprehension beyond mere decoding. When educators reframe their work with youth as less about passing high-stakes tests and more about learning to navigate the multiple literacy contexts in which they live, learn, and work, students' motivation for reading increases. For this reason, literacy specialists are exploring links between disciplinary literacy, inquiry, and media literacy. Media literacy instructional practices honor students' popular culture and lived experience, and offer opportunities for students to bring their affect, emotion, imagination, and social interaction into reading practices that examine and challenge cultural conventions like materialism and consumerism that are reproduced in media culture on a daily basis.

Educators are themselves citizens who express and share political views as part of their personal identity. They may care deeply about issues including climate change, immigration/migration, growing economic inequality, health and wellness, racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination, or other topics of concern. But in the classroom, some educators do not feel confident or comfortable exploring controversial issues with students, while others make clear their particular positions on political issues without necessarily reflecting on the inequality in power relationships that may silence their students. The practice of critical media analysis and reflection help teachers navigate both the opportunities and the challenges of exploring contemporary controversies in the classroom. Teachers benefit greatly from safe and structured opportunities to talk about the ethical and moral implications of their decisions to address or ignore controversial issues in the classroom.

Academic librarians, technologists, and higher education faculty have been actively experimenting with new forms of digital learning during the global pandemic. In the process, they have discovered some valuable strategies and practices that will continue to fuel innovation in teaching, learning, and scholarship for years to come. In this session, we’ll discuss why it’s more important than ever before to have complicated conversations about all the literacies - information, media, news, digital, critical, and those that are yet to be named. How do these competencies get integrated into all programs and courses across the liberal arts and sciences? In this session, we’ll take time to experiment, working in small groups, using create-to-learn pedagogies that can provoke intellectual curiosity by combining play and learning. Then, we’ll reflect on how creative collaboration can offer a liberating way to open up spaces of possibility and adaptation for the stakeholders in our own institutions and communities. Renee Hobbs is an expert in digital and media literacy education and she is the author of Mind Over Media: Propaganda Education for a Digital Age, which was awarded the 2021 PROSE Award for Excellence in Social Sciences from the Association of American Publishers. As professor of communication studies and director of the Media Education Lab, she co-directs the Graduate Certificate in Digital Literacy at the University of Rhode Island. She has published 12 books and over 150 scholarly and professional articles and developed multimedia learning resources for elementary, secondary and college teachers.

Teenagers are able to access a rich variety of information sources and have instant, hand-held access to a wealth of information. However, some sources of information sacrifice quality and reliability for anonymity and convenience when it comes to life-concern information seeking. A greater understanding is needed of how teenagers decide what specific sources are comfortable to use and what privacy factors might prevent teenagers from seeking information from reliable resources.

This talk for the 5th annual Discover Academic Research, Training, and Support (DARTS) conference discusses the role of online information in the building, management, and evaluation of personal reputation. It considers the existing literature surrounding reputation and social media use, as well as some early findings from Frances’ information science doctoral investigation on the same topics. A short interactive element encourages participants to think about their own social media use, online information behaviours, and digital footprints—as well as some practical advice on managing a reputation that you can’t fully control.

Pre-search questions and applications Chericia Avant CMC/240 11/25/2013 Heather Parker Running head: PRE-SEARCH QUESTIONS AND APPLICATIONS 1 PRE-SEARCH QUESTIONS AND APPLICATIONS 2 Pre-search questions and applications Ethnicity In order to avoid giving biased information regarding this topic to the public, examining of one’s cultural assumptions is very crucial and also understanding of people view regarding the topic. Several questions are worthwhile considering before embarking on the research: What actually is ethnicity and what makes an ethnic group? What do you as an individual term ethnicity to be? What do the public consider ethnicity to be? What does the government or the constitution term ethnicity to be? Do you as individual make ethnic jokes? Or behave differently towards different ethnic groups? Information about ethnicity can be obtained from areas such as books documenting its origin and how it is spread, from newspapers, daily interactions of people of different ethnicities, work places, schools, churches, journals, articles and media among others (Yinger, 1994) Find and list 3 or 4 sources for Bullying in school (physical, cyber, laws, or role of schools of parents)... Bullying is all about the exploitation of power. Cyber bullying is a whole society’s issue, in schools, neighborhood and at home among others (Kowalski, Limber & Agatston, 2012). Students who bully others face-to-face are also the ones whom bully others online. The cyber bullying in schools can be facilitated through: Mobile phones E-mails Social networking sites Credibility of the sources The sources for my project topic have a high level of accuracy since first-hand information is obtained through the media and also direct observation. The audience involved here are all people of ethnic backgrounds and thus the proper audience is addressed. The sources used here are also credible in that they all have the authority to touch about the topic agenda though acquiring such sources such as books, magazines and journals can not only be time consuming but can also require a lot of money. For the bullying, the proper audience may not be addressed as it not only involves students and the authority of accessing such message be barred since it is rather difficult to track individual phones or emails (Salkind, 2012) Follow-up question After reading the sources the following questions are of importance: What form of information does one need to retrieve from such a source? How can one get information from sources where there is limited authority? What are the implications of getting information from personalized sources? What important keywords can be used to emphasize specific keywords of the topics? Does one have enough content for the topic? References Kowalski, R. M., Limber, S., & Agatston, P. W. (2012). Suzette Fromm-Reed, PhD & Wytress Richardson, EdD Presentation at 2016 Science of HOPE Description: The purpose of this presentation is to explore the implications of research that examined community buffers to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and consider how to build and sustain organizational and community resilience. Specifically, findings will be explored indicating community buffers were at least as important as individual level resilience and are needed to sustain the impact of individual level resilience. The study examined: 1. Adult surveys from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), (N=30,000), 2. Youth surveys examining risk and protective factors (N= 200,000) and 3. Public agency data (from merged social, health and education agency databases) for different communities (N=120) in Washington State (all merged data for 2009-2012 by the Foundation for Healthy Generations in Seattle, funded by the Gates Foundation and presented by external consultants). The intent of this presentation is to engage in a dialogue about the implications of the findings.

Fake news has been shown to spread far faster than facts on social media platforms. Rampant fake news has led to deep political polarization and the undermining of basic democratic institutions. Skepticism is an important component of information literacy and has often been pointed to as the antidote to the fake news epidemic. Why are skepticism and information literacy failing so terrifically in this post-truth era? The presenters will summarize research drawn from the fields of psychology and mass communication that shows just how hardwired people are to believe information from their own “tribes” and resist outside contrary information. How we think about and teach skepticism and information literacy is in need of an overhaul for the twenty-first century. This webinar will introduce some ideas for that overhaul and will also provide practical classroom activities that do a better job of addressing the cognitive aspects of information literacy and skepticism.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
