2. Background information
Released on 16th September 2011.
Re-make of the 1979 version.
Director – Tomas Alfredson
Stars – Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy
Based on John Le Carre’s 1974 bestseller, story
is set in the aftermath of the Cold War.
3. Working Title Formula
Colin Firth is an actor who has been used
in previous WT films.
Tom Hardy is a name that is less familiar
with WT work.
The setting in Istanbul is irregular to the
usual British or American set.
The genre is Thriller apposed to generic
Rom-Com.
StudioCanal funded the film for WT to
produce.
They aimed for a European audience
opposed to American.
4. Marketing
Magazines and radio were used
to market the film.
Television and the internet was
used to promote the films.
The films website has a
navigations process where you
have to crack codes to enter the
site, similar to those in the film.
But is hard to use.
Not a huge budget for marketing
so nothing spectacular or out of
the ordinary was seen.
When releasing the film a
featuret of the original was also
released.
5. Box Office Figures
Budget was £20,000,000
Opening Weekend: £2,814,860 (UK) (18
September 2011) (382 Screens)
Gross: £12,342,655 (UK) (16 October
2011)
In terms of success the film was not
deemed to meet the hopeful amount that
the producers had hoped for.
However DVD release has not happened
yet.
Very good reviews from the critics.
