Francesco borromini
1. FRANCESCO BORROMINI
• 25 September 1599 – 2 August 1667
• Italian architect
• leading figure in the emergence of Roman
Baroque architecture
• Famous works –
San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane
Sant'Agnese in Agone
Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza
Oratorio dei Filippini
2. The two architects can be seen as representative of the two
distinct sides of Baroque architecture in Rome
• Bernini embraced a
Baroque classicism
• strictly inspired by the
religious concept that the
proportions of buildings
should correspond to those
of man
• Borromini’s architecture
adapted classical elements to
a more innovative architecture
that was defined by organically
curving lines and a
complicated interplay of
geometrical forms.
• his façades and his famous
bizarre bell towers took shape
out of a series of geometric
subunits, such as squares,
rectangles, circles and ovals,
repeated in an alternating
sequence
6. In Borromini's case, geometry is not necessarily meant
or only generate form, but also remains an implicit
justification of the building as a whole. It becomes a
sort of hidden dimension, disguised by a profusion of
structural and decorative manipulations.
