What kind of institution may distribute my media product and why?
1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
2. About:
Ipc media (International publishing corporation) is a British publishing
company. One of the biggest consumer and digital publisher in the UK.
IPC have 5 divisions:
• IPC Inspire
• IPC Connect
• IPC Southbank
• IPC Advertising
• IPC Marketforce
Which 3 are publishing divisions (IPC Inspire, Connect and Southbank).
IPC media is now owned by Time Warner Company after Cinven (a
venture captial group who financed IPC in 1998) sold IPC to Time Warner
in 2001.
3. Three publishing divisions
IPC Inspire, Connect and Southbank have
different target market. Each divisions are
aimed for different gender, therefore each
publishing divisions hold different genre of
what they distribute in the public.
As the UK's leading consumer magazine
publisher IPC engage with 26m UK adults -
almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK
men.
4. IPC Inspire is IPC's men's division. Its portfolio of 38 brands covers a
huge spectrum of interests and includes famous names from Country
Life and The Field to Nuts and NME. It also have other wealth of
leisure brands like Horse & Hound, Rugby World and Decanter. As
well as lifestyle brand like Mousebreaker.
5. IPC mass market women's division
comprises famous women's
weeklies including Now, Chat and
Woman; TV entertainment brands
including What's on TV, TVTimes
and TV & Satellite Week and the
goodtoknow network. Connect's
magazines are read by 9.4 million
mass market women, which
equates to 49% of all mass market
women.
IPC Connect serves its consumers
in the following key sectors:
celebrity and fashion, lifestyle,
traditional, TV and entertainment,
real life and casual gaming.
6. IPC Soutbhbank is upmarket
women's division and comprises
luxury fashion brands including Marie
Claire and InStyle, lifestyle brands
including woman&home and
Essentials and home interest brands
including Ideal Home, Livingetc and
housetohome.
Southbank has a magazine for every
interest in a woman's life, from the
fashion conscious to the homeowner
to the woman looking for lifestyle
inspiration. Its titles offer unrivalled
content and reach a readership base
of over ten million.
8. Music magazine
NME is distributed and published by IPC
inspire which target‟s are dominantly
men. This division (IPC inspire) ideally
target the adult men in the UK. Since
IPC inspire distribute NME (whose ideal
readers are mainly men), this explain
their conventional layout and style.
NME is usually illustrated in the same
colour pattern; red, black, yellow and
white. This colour scheme is quite
unisex however may visually appeal the
majority of men as it is strong and
perhaps „masculine‟. The fonts are also
bold and edgy which may portray the
stereotype interest of men; men
stereotypically likes edgy and bold fonts
as it is not „girly‟ or „feminine‟.
9. In my opinion, it may be possible for my magazine “Nation” to be
published by IPC since I also based my front cover as well as my
content page on NME in terms of layout, style and colour scheme.
However, IPC Inspire‟s target are mainly male adults. This may
complicate things because my ideal readers are dominantly female
young adults or older. Despite that factor, I believe that company like
IPC may distribute my magazine because my magazine “Nation”
followed NME‟s conventional layout as well as contents. The key
factor is to provide the readers what‟s new in music, albums,
intriguing slogans and more. Furthermore, my Nation‟s artists/bands
are mostly located or originated in the UK therefore, this may attract
UK readers to engage with my music magazine and since IPC is the
biggest distributor in the UK, it may increase my magazine‟s chance
to be published by IPC.

11. Bauer Media connects and
engages 19 million consumers
every week with the most
influential brands in the UK.
They have two divisions which
is magazines and radio. Bauer
owns magazines like men‟s
lifestyle brands like FHM,
entertainment and music
including Mojo, Empire and Q.
Also Kerrang!
Bauer also owns radio brands
including Heat, Kiss, Cool FM
and Magic.
12. Music magazine
Kerrang is one of well-known rock magazine
that Bauer distributes worldwide. Kerrang‟s
layout is funky; it has a lot of edgy, grungy
and bold texts – especially the title is
designed to portray shattered glass or
something similar and this is relevant as it is
a rock magazine. The use of „crack‟ on its title
links with the loud music of rock and roll.
Moreover, Kerrang also uses the same
conventional color scheme for music
magazines (red,black, white and yellow).
I based some of my magazine‟s elements on
Kerrang. For example: my magazine also
advertise other bands at the bottom (plus!).
Another similarities between my magazine
and Kerrang is that both advertise upcoming
gig/tour on the same way (use of circle
stickers).
13. Lastly, my music magazine also
includes indie rock. This may
be a relevant genre to
Kerrang.Therefore, overall I
think Bauer may publish and
distribute my music
magazine.
