Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Read Chart Planning involves Goal Setting as well as a Action Plans to achieve them.
  2. Why Plan – The answer may be obvious – but lets take a moment to convince ourselves it is worth the effort – Because it is an effort Establish Direction – this provides focus and priority Identify Expectations – Planning tells people what the final result that is expected and who provides the results It improves teamwork – if people understand the direction and expectation – they will pull together Planning Heighten performance – it should challenge people to improvement Planning sets a performance standard Lets spend a moment and list the consequences of not planning Planning Goals are essential for any organization Goals are important for us in our private lives also
  3. Read Chart What is Mission - It clearly states the nature of the organization Goals must support the mission Goals that don’t support the mission are irrelevant Example Mission – 2 charts What is the mission of ASME “To promote the arts and science of Mech Engr What is the mission of your section? This will be part of the exercise later
  4. Who need to be involved in the process of settings goals? 1. Everyone involved who has a major role or responsibility in achieving the goal needs to be involved in development of the goal. 2. Because a lot of people nay be involved and need to stay focused – communication is critical 3. Goal setting is a negotiation process and must take into account different perspectives – but in the end all parties must agree 4. For example: improving plant availability from 90% to 95% needs to involve people from maintenance, scheduling, personnel. 5. Goals may involve people from many departments: design, manufacturing, procurement, management. 6. All need to be involved. All need to agree.
  5. Step 2 is to write a goal statement A goal is only as good as the desire and intent Goals need to be SMART - Read Chart Goals need to be relevant Goals need to have a specific date and time for accomplishment A goal with indefinite date will not be achieved 6. Goals must have an associated BUDGET 7. Goals must be written
  6. WIIFM is very important 1. It must be a Win-Win situation A Win for the individual and a Win for the organization For ASME, you can’t give money, but you can give recognition People get pride in an achievement and getting recognized for it. Give recognition liberally
  7. Goals need to be classified with various criteria such as these An essential goal is to submit reports on time A problem solving goal is to increase attendance An innovative goal is to put on an seminar on the EIT Fundamentals Exam Goals then need to be prioritized as to what Is the most important
  8. Looking at what will impede you in achieving your goal must be looked at and included in the planning Is the meeting room available? Will the advisor approve of this activity? Will the members think this a waste of time?
  9. Or if you don’t know where you are going, how do you know when you get there. Or if you don’t know where you are going, you can always say there. Without planning there can be lots of activity but no progress
