Intensity of food production
Intensification of food production ,[object Object],Productivity ,[object Object],[object Object]
Relief The difference between the highest and lowest elevations in an area. Refers to physical height and slope of the land Gentle/ flat relief:_____________ Facilitates movement and transportation.
Soil Productivity depends on fertility of soil Requires right amount of water, sunlight, air and nutrients Where can you find fertile soils? _____________________________
Climate Refers to atmospheric conditions of a specific place over a considerable period of time (30-35 years) High temperature & rainfall :___________
Social factors Land fragmentation = land is divided into smaller plots = Resultant plots will eventually become small over time
Social factors Land tenure A land which is owned by an individual/government, who is said to "hold" the land. Farmers must pay a sum of money or give a portion of their crops to get the right to live on, work and use the land. Little motivation for the farmers.
Political factors Government policies Government has a final say on how resources are to be used to bring greater development in the country.
New Food Self-Sufficiency Policy Could Revive Farming in Singapore Singapore. Wong KokFah, one of Singapore’s last remaining farmers, can finally see a future for his vegetable business after 30 years of back-breaking work. Plans by the industrialized city-state to set aside more land for farming to boost food security have given him hope that the fourth generation of the Wong family can continue the business started by his grandfather. “In the past, my thinking was I’ll do it for as long as I can,” said Wong, a stocky 48-year-old with a prematurely aged face. “It’s difficult for the next generation to continue in this business if there’s no help from the government,” he said. “How could I make any plans for my business when I could see no future in it?
Agricultural Types – High-Tech Farming ,[object Object]
It is practised in countries such as the United States of America, United Kingdom and Singapore.Fruit and Vegetable Farming ,[object Object]
Plants in an aeroponics farm have their roots suspended in the air, with a nutrient solution being sprayed onto the roots. The air is cooled to simulate conditions found in temperate regions.,[object Object]
For egg farming in a modern chicken farm, hens are fed a special diet blended by computerised machines, and eggs are collected efficiently by conveyor belts.Milking of cows using special machines. Eggs are collected via conveyor belts, saving both time and effort.
Agricultural Types – High-Tech Farming
Technological factors Use of modern machines and farming methods to have greater control over the physical limitations The Green Revolution Due to rapid population growth, a need to increase food production Incorporate modern technology to overcome food shortage and help subsistence farmers in LDCs to increase their income.
High yielding varieties Improved strains of rice, wheat and other cereals Developed by cross breeding HYVs have special traits: pest resistance and shorter growth period E.g: IR58 = 100 days IR8 =130 days
Modern irrigation methods Irrigation= practice of supplying water to the land through artificial means Benefits ,[object Object]
Ensure that crop receive enough water at all seasons,[object Object]
