UCLA School of Public Affairs, this workshop provided Fellows with the basics of
Transformative Action. A nationally recognized speaker and Echoing Green
Fellow, Scott Sherman covered the art of building relationships, effective
communication techniques and team building and probed the question of what
creates change and transforms individuals, communities and the world.

Scott’s work on nonviolent social change projects has been praised by such Nobel
Peace Prize Laureates as the Dalai Lama and the late Mother Teresa. In 2004, he
was nominated for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars' Faculty of the Year
award for the entire U.S.

Social Innovation Competition

During each Institute, candidates have the opportunity to consult for a business or
organization on a real world case challenge. In NY ‘10, our 130 candidates were
divided in 18 teams lead by StartingBloc Fellows as mentors to work on a social
innovation challenge for Echoing Green.

Ideas Marketplace

The Ideas Marketplace provided candidates with the opportunity to give a one
minute pitch on a passion, project, or business they are working on. Four
candidates were then selected by their Institute class to present their ideas in
detail in later sessions.

Meet-ups

StartingBloc values collaboration across sectors, academic disciplines, and subject
areas. During meet-ups, candidates gathered in groups designated by topic, such
as health, education, or climate change. They sparked a discussion or participated
in a debate with their peers. Some teams took action to solve the problem under
discussion, and continue to volunteer with their groups today.

Goal Circle

Candidates met in small groups to 'make their own luck'. Each group member
identified a specific goal, from being admitted to an MBA program to moving to a
new city. Their team members offered the advice and connections needed to make
the goal a reality.

Peer Learning :: The Wealth of Knowledge is in the Room

Does it bother you to sit a room with hundreds of great minds and not have the
opportunity to actively learn from them? StartingBloc believes that the wealth of
knowledge is in the room and the time has come to unleash it.

StartingBloc candidates enriched their experience by learning something new
from their peers, and teaching something return. With the belief that everyone is
an expert in something, candidates will be split into groups to teach topics
ranging from salsa dancing to tax law.

Candidates will left the session with newfound knowledge and and a tight bond
with their peers, having gone through an experience that is humbling by nature.
What can you teach the world?

Social Innovation Competition :: Final Presentations

During each Institute, candidates have the opportunity to consult a business or
organization on a real world case challenge. This year our 130 candidates were
divided in 18 teams to work on the following challenge for Echoing Green:

How should Echoing Green design a differentiated online engagement strategy in
line with its Be Bold effort, that will support a wide audience of young people as
they build careers with impact?

Following submission of a written proposal, the final five selected teams had eight
minutes to present their ideas. Three minute Q & A with the judges and the
audience followed. The winning team presented their findings to the Echoing
Green executive team in New York City.
Highlights :: Day 5
Ideas Marketplace :: Presentations

Earlier in the Institute, the Ideas Marketplace provided candidates with the
opportunity to give a one minute pitch on a passion, project, or business they are
working on. The ideas were then voted upon by their peers.

The following four were selected by the Institute class to present their ideas in
detail. Ideas Marketplace Final Presentations are seven minutes with a three
minute Q & A.

Highlights :: Day 5
15 Year Reunion "Cocktail Party"

What if you had the opportunity to come back after 15 years and share your story
with everyone in room?

What dreams were made?! What crazy adventures did you go on? How has the
world changed because of your work? The 15 Year Reunion "Cocktail Party" is an
interactive experience where everyone in the room has the chance to open their
mind, travel in time and live out the future in the present.

The candidates reunited in 2025, and shared their biggest dreams. With the first
lady governor of Missouri, a man who lives on the moon, and several Grammy
winners, this high energy session pushed the boundaries of how we picture
success.
