Sims Media Center ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Hours The Media Center is open to students, parents and staff each school day from 7:10 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Sims Media Center Description The media center is located on the first hallway to the right after entering Sims Elementary. The media center is the first door on the right. There is only a single door opening of 34 ” . This satisfies the ADA policy requirements for doorway size of 32 ” for a single doorway. Nothing of real interest invites people inside. The entrance could use some sprucing up.

Sims Media Center Description These exits are convenient to the parking lot and make the facility a good place for activities and events held outside of regular school hours. There are two outside entrances to the media center. These entrances satisfy ADA requirements of access to parking.

Sims Media Center Description The media center is a room about 60 ’ x 70 ’ feet with windows all across the top of the exterior wall. The approximately 4200 square feet of space exceeds Georgia DOE facilities policy for square footage per student. A FTE of 515 requires only 2850 square feet. At Sims full capacity it still meets the 2950 square foot requirement.

Sims Media Center Description View from inside media center of doors to offices. There are two other interior doors that connect the media center to two small rooms. These rooms are connected by a moveable wall. The rooms are currently being used as office space and are no longer used as part of the media center. They are located just inside the main entrance to Sims Elementary. This was valuable media center space and should be part of the media center again.

Sims Media Center Description There is an office for the media specialist inside the media center. This office connects to a small kitchen. It also connects to the media clerk’s office which houses the computer system server, the video playback equipment and video collection.

Photo Tour of Media Center This view shows the standing computer station and the area used to store some of the teacher’s materials. Carts and overhead projectors are parked in this area also.

Photo Tour of Media Center From the area where the overhead projectors are parked you can see the sitting computer station with eight computers. You also can see to the far end and one of the exterior doors.

Photo Tour of Media Center This is the corner where the reference and biography sections meet. The walls are light tan and the carpet is blue. A few modern, blue, plastic chairs are paired with tables with dark laminate tops and metal legs.

Photo Tour of Media Center As you continue along the wall, you come to some non-fiction. The shelves are neat with plenty of room. However, the displayed artwork is by students from 1988. Time for an update.

Photo Tour of Media Center Next is everyone’s favorite cozy reading area with a sofa and loveseat. The students love to sit here. The furniture seats five, and it has seen better days.

Lots of light comes in through the glass door and the tall windows beside it. At times it could be too much light for television viewing. New blinds would help.

Photo Tour of Media Center This bookcase holds professional materials on one side and oversized picture books on the other. Both of these should be moved to other spots. A globe, lamp and CD player sit on top. It serves as a low divider for the sofa reading area and the main library area.

There are wood and laminate tables and chairs for older students. Not the most comfortable seating. The space is open and has plenty of natural light but there are a lot of hard surfaces.

The large windows let n natural light and the open area of the space is conducive to group discussions on literature. We also have a nice selection of books for both students and teachers.” “ The shelf layouts - the easy books separated from the others.” “ The space and layout.” “ I think the best overall feature of our media center is the personnel. The rest needs updating!” “ The variety of books for the students.” “ Everything is easily accessible and the children can be viewed from all vantage points.” “ I think the best feature of the media center is the computerized card catalog.” “ I like the way the bookshelves are arranged. Plenty of open areas to sit and read.” “ The tables and bookshelves are low in the center. It creates a good traffic flow, and wall items are easy to see.” “ I like the way it is arranged so that a large group can sit on the floor and listen to stories. It is also ‘open’ and friendly, and easy to move around. It is light and cheery, and very welcoming! I think our students feel ‘ownership’ of our library.”

The plastic bags holding the small sets of books looks messy and cluttered. Putting that area behind closed doors would be better.” “ Change up the décor, it is old.” “ More updated look, more art, comfortable seating areas for students to read, beanbags, etc. Maybe a nice rug, some color!!” “ I would paint it, add a ‘smart board,’ equip it with more comfortable chairs and round tables.” “ I would replace the tables with ones that have darker colored surfaces. A brown black would be ideal. I have several reasons for this.” “ I would have creative designs on the wall to make it more inviting. Open up the space on the left and put the sofas in that area. It should also include other chairs and quiet reading areas.” “ I would paint the walls a soft blue or other relaxing color. Right now they are light tan. I would also like to see some display furniture pieces. We don’t have any area to display student projects or collections.” “ Maybe make the ‘sofa corner’ larger and add some cushions, etc. so that a whole class could sit comfortably for a story or activity.” “ I can’t think of anything.”

Needed Media Center Policies All school media centers with a base FTE of 450 should be required by the state to have double doors at all exterior entrances/exits. Sims media center has single doors at both exterior entrances/exits.
