Project on Public Transportation in Malmo

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. This is our idea for a new payment system for the public transportation in Malmö. Why the machine is called one for all machine: because it seeks to address the public transport needs of all users. This one-for-all machine will be placed at every bus stop in Malmo.
  2. Demonstration of prototype here. Our prototype is made from a simple cardboard box and the screens we focused on are stuck onto the box in order of how it will appear for a certain scenario. Some key features of the One-for-all machine are that:Translated in different languages – We created Swedish and English buttons, and other where the user can select other languages.Choose a destination – We have an interactive map where bus stop locations and landmarks can be displayed and selected.Choosing the duration of the ticket – this is part of our pay-as-you-go idea Payment methods – only by bank card and cellphonePayment with NFC enabled devices, supported by credit/debit card app such as iWallet or GoogleWalletBuy a disposable Jojo card – will be explained further later as our pay-as-you-go ideaCheck balance – similar to the current check balance option at ticket vending machines.
  3. Here is the structure of the machine.Greyed out boxes indicates areas we did not focus on. The scenario we focused on is allowing someone to purchase what we call a ‘Disposable’ Jojo card First the user will see the language selection screen. then the person either selects their destination by chosing a bus stop location or landmark, or enters their destination in the search option. the bus schedule is then shown for all buses from the users current location to the destination they selected. Then the user choses how long they want their diposableJojo card to be valid for. We set the minimum time to 1hr and the maximum to 24 hours. When a time is selected the cost of the diposable ticket is automatically calculated and shown. Then for payment options the user can chose bank card or cell phone. This includes any internation bank card and cell phone option as well. Our focus was on payment by bank card. After successful payment the user receives a ‘Disposable’ Jojo card they can use for the duration they chose. On most screens there is the check balance option where the user can check the balance of their prepaid Jojo card, like the existing system, or check the time left on their Disposable Jojo.
  4. This is the framework or ‘big picture’ of our project. the existing prepaid and monthly Jojo cards can be purchased and used in the way they are now, As part of this framework we introduce three new concepts 1. a console on every bus stop which is our ‘One-for-all’ machine 2. the ‘Disposable’ Jojo card, 3. and wireless detectors on every bus. at the bus consoles the disposable jojo card is purchased and it is automatically detected on entering and exiting the bus, enabling a pay as you go public transport system. The characteristics of these three new concepts are now explained. Console on each bus stop characteristics :This machine is the main focus of our project. It is the prototype we built and tested and has already been explained. “one for all” machine, meaning one machine for all users Automatically determines if a disposable, prepaid / monthly card is used information on public transport such as bus schedules, travel duration, Check balance for prepaid (cash) and disposable cards (time) Navigation using maps, location of bus stops, landmarks and search engineTranslated in different languagesPayment methods by any bank card or cell phone, no cash paymentbecause of previous problem of cash on the bus ie robberies of bus drivers Payment with NFC enabled devices, supported by credit/debit card app such as iWallet or GoogleWallet Disposable Jojo card characteristics: built from environmentally friendly materials and dissolves when exposed to water, is non rechargeable can be purchased for a specified duration as you previous saw. ID number of card is different from prepaid and monthly card Wireless detectors on every bus automatically detects any Jojo card on entering and leaving the bus charged for the duration of the journey – “Pay as you go”. In the existing system as person pays a flat rate regardless of the distance of the journey.
  5. All people who use public transport in Malmo is part of the target audience and user group for our system, however we defined three broad categories of users.International students –We chose to focus on this user group because this group is most accessible to us. Also includes newcommers to the city. Residents – People living in Malmo and environs Tourists – visitors for a few days at a timeThe sequence of steps we focused on for using the one-for-all machine is similar for all these user groups.User groups charactersticsThe diagram shows the key user characteristics and is self-explanatory. The user group we focused on are International students, which also includes newcommers. The main characteristics of this group are:Live in Malmo or nearbyVarious languagesNo Swedish bank cardNo Swedish sim card Fixed destinationUse public transport regularlyTravel time limitations to get to destination e.g. for classEventually learns the transport systemFrom these characteristics the needs of this user group can be derived.
  6. Considering the big picture, our focus on the one-for-all machine and the target user group we created a storyboard illustrating a scenario of using the machine.Briefly explain each screen In creating this we identified problems with the main concept in general as well as the narrow concept, such as payment method by pay as you go we defined exactly how the pay as you go system will work This storyboard was used to prepare the video scenario which will now be shown…
  7. This video scenario is the result of the storyboard. This scenario is intended to just be a tool for formulating the ‘big picture’ and not demonstrate the final concept.
  8. To create the video scenario, the design details and the main concept ideas we first identified three key Use Qualities which are convenience, fair payment and safety.Use QualitiesThese use qualities are in effect the needs of the ‘International Students’ user group whose characteristics were shown previously.Convenience includes fast and easy.Fast – no lines, easy-get to where you want to goFair payment – pay for what you useSafety – no cashFast and easy is typically seen as contradicting qualities however our main concept challenges this by allowing the user to simply enter the bus without having to pause at the Jojo card machine inside the bus.Click here Key Design decisionsBased on these three main qualities we further identified three main key design decisions which are Pay as you go,Information dissemination and Non-cash payment.Pay as you go incorporates thedisposable Jojo card and wifi sensors on each bus allows you to pay for only what you use, save money for the user, gives the user more control over their travelling expenses.Information provided helps users get to where they want to go and incorporates the ideas of :Locations (Bus stops, Landmarks, map, etc.)Bus schedulesCheck balancePersonal information (traveling habits, promotions)Non-cash payment for safetyBank cardPay by phone (sms, NFC, QR)
  9. To derive these use qualities we conducted fieldwork in the form of Interviews – Interviewed information officer at Skanetrafiken, persons at the Central station who use the train and several international students.Observations – at different times of the day, different locations. Fly on the wall approach.Experience situations – we talked about our personal experience with public transport in Malmo.Published materials – Online researchVideos – Linked to observations
  10. One fieldwork example.
  11. After having done the fieldwork, define the use qualities, develop the broad and narrow concept, focus on a scenario and create the prototype, theconcluding step in our project was testing of the bus console prototype with international students. Here are some pictures of that testing process. From this testing we discovered some ideas that can be used in future development of the concept.Findings in prototype testing international bank charges for payments font size for different people listing of bus stops most testers thought the bus schedule was interactive/selectable redesign of screen ‘choose destination’
