2. Picture Writing of the American Indian Col. Mallery, Garrick (1831-94) army officer and ethnologist. In 1877 he was assigned to the U.S. Geographical and Geological Survey to study Indian drawings. He retired from the army in 1879 to work as a civilian on the staff of the Bureau of Ethnology In 1884 he published “Picture Writing of the American Indians” in two Volumes containing 822 pages, 54 plates, and 1290 illustrations, still the definitive work on ancient American picture writing; petroglyphs, drawings and pictographs. The book was Reprinted in 1972, in 2 vols, by Dover Press.
