3. What is
Dragon Naturally Speaking (DNS)?
Dragon is a dictation software, students can dictate a paper
rather than type it.
• It dictates everything you say into a microphone.
• It has the ability to work with Word documents, Excel
spreadsheets, the Internet, and more.
• It can learn the differences in peoples voices.
• It also has the ability to read back to you everything you
just said, that way you can hear it as well as see it.
4. Before Using DNS
Setting Up the Microphone
Dragon Naturally Speaking should be set up in the same
environment that it will be used in (e.g. quiet or noisy
environment).
Connect the headphones to be used (internal
microphone will usually not work)- can use 2-plug style
or USB style headphone
With provided USB headphones, the vital component is
the USB connector (replacement headphones can be
purchased but USB connector is very important not to
be lost).
6. Before Using DNS
Setting Up the Microphone
Headphone placement is also key with the microphone
about 3 cm away from lips – does not need to be right
against mouth.
7. Getting Started with DNS –
Creating a New DNS User Profile
Starting the Dragon Naturally Speaking software
With first run of program, DNS will require creating a new user
profile that will require user to complete several steps that will
take approximately 20-25 minutes
User opens Dragon Naturally Speaking and a list of users appears.
You can have multiple users on DNS.
It is very important to only use your own file, as you will corrupt
the voice file of others by using their user.
Creating an individual voice file
Having user complete all steps of initial setup
Lenovo laptops > USB Only
Lenovo desktops > USB or Mic-In Jack
Dell laptops or desktops > USB or Mic-In Jack
8. Getting Started with DNS –
Creating a New DNS User Profile
Can adjust input device later as needed (including recordings from
other devices and programs e.g. mp3 recordings).
In the user list, the user clicks on “new” and types in their first
name or nickname.
The user clicks on “start volume check” and starts reading the
passage on the screen
The user next clicks on “start audio quality check” and starts
reading the passage on the screen
When DNS wants you to read a passage, a yellow arrow will appear
and will follow the text as you read. Text that has already been
read will turn grey. If the arrow stops, the user should go back to
the point indicated and reread until the arrow moves on.
9. Getting Started with DNS –
Creating a New DNS User Profile
User chooses a story to read from the list
DNS will next do a read text aloud to train Dragon section can
coach the students by speaking softly into their ear) – show text
with prompting will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes
Trainer prompts the user to read in their natural, comfortable,
speaking voice. Users should try not use a “reading aloud” voice as
though they were reading the story to a child
DO say commas, quotations marks, questions marks, periods,
colons, semi-colons
DO NOT worry about capital letters as these most often
automatically follow these other punctuation symbols and can be
edited using the keyboard later.
10. Getting Started with DNS –
Creating a New DNS User Profile
If the yellow arrow/grey text stops and lets the user know to
simply keep reading if they stumble or repeat themselves (unless
the yellow arrow stops)
A dialog box will pop up when DNS has enough information for the
voice file
