Here is my idea description for an innovative service to harness the potential of our old & used books and create employment for someone, while at the same time creating more space in our attics as well as caring for environment.
1. Backyard Library Using Books We Have Stored In Our Attics!
Create & run a several local 'green' libraries for neighbors, using books that we store in our attics.
Most of us have atleast 100 books in our attics, which occupy space and in general useless, after we
have read them once.
My idea is to create a web-based system that enables anybody to be a librarian and "open" up his books
to his neighbors. Neighbors can donate their books to the library and in turn get free membership.
Membership can also be bought through subscription fees.
We can create the world's largest library under a common brand "backyardlibary" which helps re-use of
old books, generates employment for several handicapped people and more importantly cares for the
environment by cutting down fewer trees to make books.
1. Social Cause
Re-use books that we have bought and create "librarian" opportunities for several handicapped people.
All they need is an internet connection and a "warehouse" to manage books. Each library with about
100 users can generate a revenue of approximately Rs. 5000/- per month for the librarian.
2. Environment Friendly
The library is local, usually within the walking distance (say within the apartment complex) of where the
user lives. And we would deal with books already bought, but not used by anyone. This reduces the
number of trees cut down to make books and also reduces the vehicle pollution of driving up to the
nearest library.
3. Encourages reading habit at near-zero costs
Sharing books to create libraries not only generates employment for the handicapped or needy but also
encourages all of us to read more books at negligible costs.

project design with the purpose of getting estimates for the project.
2. 4. Creates a social network of book lovers who also care for environment
We will also create a social network of book lovers who also care for environment.
5. Gets more space in our attics!
