Definition of health
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a “state of
complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 1947).
Good Health:
It is ability to handling stress and living a longer, more active life.
Features:
➢ Ability to work efficiently.
➢ Free from disease condition.
➢ Good mental condition.
➢ Able to take decision and complete the work systematically.

Factors for promoting & maintaining good health:-
❖ Supply of fresh air, light & potable water.
❖ Balanced diet.
❖ Proper healthful shelter.
❖ Adequate clothing.
❖ Hygienic environmental sanitation.
❖ Protection from communicable & non communicable disease.
❖ Adequate physical activity, rest & relaxation according to
individual needs.
❖ Suitable occupation with job satisfaction.
❖ Good & simple habits with leisure & pleasure.

❖ Health is inter- sectoral.
❖ Health is integral part of development.

CONCEPT OF HEALTH
• There are following types of concept of health are:-
❖ Biomedical concept
❖ Ecological concept
❖ Psychosocial concept
❖ Holistic concept
❖ Concept of well being

Biomedical Concept
❖ Traditionally, health has been viewed as an
“absence of disease”, and if one was free from
disease, then the person was considered
healthy.
❖ This concept has the basis in the “germ
theory of disease”.
❖ The medical profession viewed the human body
as a machine, disease as a consequence of the
breakdown of the machine and one of the
doctor’s task as repair of the machine.

Ecological Concept
According to this concept, health is a
dynamic equilibrium between man and
his environment.
Disease is a maladjustment of the
human organism to environment.
This concept to support the needs for
clean air, safe water and good
atmosphere, to protect us from
exposure to unhealthy factors.
If any person is able to adjust himself
according to different environmental
situation, then he will be considered as
a healthy person.

Psychosocial Concept
• Health is not only a biomedical phenomenon, but also one.
which is influenced by social, psychological, cultural,
economic and political factors of the people concerned.
• Health is a both biological and social phenomenon.
Holistic Concept
• According to this concept, health is multidimensional approach, and
it is influenced by various factors.
• Holistic concept recognizes the strength of social, economic,
political and environmental influence on health.
• Holistic concept implies that, all sectors of society have an effect on
health, in particular agriculture, food industry, housing, education,
animal husbandary, public works and other sectors.

Concept of well being
• Wellbeing is not just the absence of disease or illness. It’s a
complex combination of a person's physical, mental, emotional and
social health factors.
• Wellbeing is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. In
short, wellbeing could be described as how you feel about yourself
and your life.

we enjoy.

Quality of Life:-
• Physical, mental & social well being perceived by Happiness,
Satisfaction & Gratification, that concern with financial
situation, education opportunities, creativity, belongingness

Biomedical Concept ❖ Traditionally, health has been viewed as an “absence of disease”, and if one was free from disease, then the person was considered healthy. ❖ This concept has the basis in the “germ theory of disease”. ❖ The medical profession viewed the human body as a machine, disease as a consequence of the breakdown of the machine and one of the doctor’s task as repair of the machine.   • 11. Ecological Concept According to this concept, health is a dynamic equilibrium between man and his environment. Disease is a maladjustment of the human organism to environment. This concept to support the needs for clean air, safe water and good atmosphere, to protect us from exposure to unhealthy factors. Psychosocial Concept • Health is not only a biomedical phenomenon, but also one. which is influenced by social, psychological, cultural, economic and political factors of the people concerned. • Health is a both biological and social phenomenon. Holistic Concept • According to this concept, health is multidimensional approach, and it is influenced by various factors. • Holistic concept recognizes the strength of social, economic, political and environmental influence on health. • Holistic concept implies that, all sectors of society have an effect on health, in particular agriculture, food industry, housing, education, animal husbandary, public works and other sectors. It’s a complex combination of a person's physical, mental, emotional and social health factors. • Wellbeing is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction.
