Abstract :
As no of patients that are suffering from cardiac diseases are increasing very rapidly, it is important
that remote ECG patient monitoring systems should be used as point of care (PoC) applications in
hospitals around the world. Therefore, huge amount of ECG signal collected by body sensor networks
from remote patients at homes will be transmitted along with other personal biological readings such
as blood pressure, temperature, glucose level, etc., and get treated accordingly by those remote patient
monitoring systems. It is very important that patient privacy is protected while data are being
transmitted over the public network as well as when they are stored in hospital servers . In this paper,
a one new technique has been introduced which is the hybrid of encryption and wavelet based ECG
steganography technique .
Encryption allows privacy and ECG steganography allows to hide one sensitive data into other
insensitive host thus guaranteeing the integration between ECG and the rest.

The Signs Of Shopping By Malcolm Gladwell
To be successful in a capitalistic government, you must be willing to step on the heads of those who
are below you, and claim their successes as your own. Advertisements within our capitalistic culture
act as a way to force the customer into buying what the corporate overlords want you to buy. Anne
Norton, author of The Signs of Shopping is a heavily published author, and has earned many awards in
her field. In her essay, she explains how businesses use advertisement techniques to increase the
profits in a retail store. Malcolm Gladwell, the author of The Science of Shopping is a staff writer for
the New Yorker. In his essay, he explains how Paco Underhill, a retail expert, taught many Forbes 500
companies how to create more opportunities to up sale to their customers. Norton shows how malls
and other shopping outlets only want one demographic to shop in their stores, and Gladwell shows
how stores utilize their internal structure to make more money. Both utilize a negative tone toward the
business practices shown in the articles, and demonstrate the manipulation of the consumer with the
usage of imagery within advertisements to show that capitalism is unethical. Manipulation of
consumers in stores and other establishments, is at a new high. Capitalism acts as the encouragement
to large corporations to use these controversial practices. Norton uses blunt language and Gladwell
explains the significance of retail to show how capitalism encourages manipulation. Norton used

The Drought Of The Western United States
WP 4
The drought in the western United States is a nationwide concern that directly affects every person in
California. It is every person s responsibility to use water sustainably and no college, including the
University of Southern California, is an exception. Rather than lagging behind sustainable water
usage, USC should be at the forefront of it. On the surface of USC s environmental sustainability
campaign, it seems as if they are making sweeping changes; however directly under the first layer of
facts there are holes in their plan. If USC made small changes to both their resident hall and
landscaping water use, they could not only save money but also better USC s environmentally friendly
status. Regardless of whether or not California is in a drought, USC should still strive to be a model
for water sustainability because it would not only better the school s reputation of being a green
university, but it would also save money. From a wider scope of things, water usage is important for
more reasons than solely the drought in California. As the world s population nears 7.4 billion people,
more people are born each day compared to how many pass away. Looking at the world s total volume
of water, only 2.5% of it is drinkable fresh water. Furthermore, 70% of that freshwater is frozen. With
an every increase population like the one we have today, it is likely that water will become the most
important resource to mankind. The problem lies in the way the fresh water is

The Three Political Parties In America
A political party is an organization that sponsors candidates for public office under the organization s
name. A political party platform is a formal set of principal goals which are supported by a political
party or individual candidate. Typically, platforms of candidates within their parties are consistent.
This is partially because of voter s tendency to vote with their party, and partially because of
expectations of candidates. Three political parties in America are Republicans, Democrats, and the
Green party. Tax reform, environmental issues, welfare and poverty, and immigration are all issues
that different parties view from different angles. Tax reform has been an integral part of American
politics since the nation s birth. The Boston Tea Party was an initial display of how strongly the
colonists felt about taxes. Today, citizens feelings towards taxes can be expressed through ... Show

As more scientific evidence has surfaced in recent years in relevance to global warming, many
informed individuals feel as though the environment is an important political issue. The Republican
party stresses that conservation is a conservative value and private property ownership is key to an
environmental agenda. The Democratic party aims to restore wilderness and watersheds for
generations to come. However, they honor hunting fishing heritage via more conservation lands. The
Green party advocates strongly for environmental issues, as made clear by their name. This party
believes that: the Human species has no right to exploit animals, sustainable society lives within
planet s resource limits, and we should safely dispose of all waste we create. A scientist who knows
the effects of global warming and the state of our planet may feel obligated to vote for the Green party
because of their environment issues, solely. Therefore, this shows how a single issue may sway a voter

Chinese Immigrants And The United States
Introduction to Chinese Americans
The beginning of Chinese immigration to the United States first started in the 19th century, the
political unrest and economic pressures in China and the Gold Rush era in California prompted
thousands of Chinese immigrants to migrate to the United States to search for temporary work, and to
seek for the dreams of gold in the 1850s. Many of them arrived in America hoping to acquired wealth
to send money back to support their families and hoping to return back to their home after a few years
with wealth, but some of them entered the United States for freedom.
Through decades and decades of struggles and isolation, this immigrant group were finally able to find
a secure place in the life of this nation. The Chinese immigrants are now the third largest immigrant
group in the United States, the graph below shows the population growth in United States from 1980
to 2013, which in 2013 the Chinese immigrant population had reached over more than 2 million and
comprising 5 percent of the overall immigrant population (Hooper and Batalova, 2015).
Chinese immigrant s arrival in the United States
Many Chinese immigrants entered the United States as legal immigrant, half of them obtain lawful
permanent residence in the United States through family channels, and this traces back to the early
1980s, where most of the Chinese immigrants are originated from Guangdong, China, because of the
province s strong historical connection with Chinese America.

The History Of Video Games
History of video games. Have you ever played a video game and wonder? How does this thing work?
Who invented it? Well you in luck because I have all the information that you need to tell you about
the history of video games. How video games have advance right along with technology that we use in
everyday life. If you ask people. When video games did first came out? Most people would say in the
1970 s and they would be wrong. In 1958, William A. Higinbotham, an engineer working for the
United States government, came up with first game played on a type of screen. It was a two player
tennis game played on an oscilloscope, a piece of electronic equipment with a 5 inch display . (The
history of video games) In 1961, Steve Russell developed the first game played on a computer called
Spacewar . The game was a hit with people but only a very few would really have the chance to enjoy
it. The reason was because back then a computer was the size of a car and very expensive this system
cost about $120,000. Only about fifty of these computer were ever sold. In the mid 1960 the Military
wanted some sort of device that would develop the reflexes of the military personnel. In 1966 Ralph
Baer, an employee of defense contractor Sanders Associates, addressed this demand when he came up
with the concept of a television gaming apparatus. (Miller) It took four more year to get a working
system. When Baer did he showed it to Magnavox, which then signed him to a licensing agreement in

How Water Transportation Would Be Further Revolutionized...
Water transportation would be further revolutionized by the construction of canals. In 1825, New York
opened the Erie Canal, which connected the five Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Northern states
like Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio also invested large amounts of money to build a network
of canals connecting the Mississippi to the Great Lakes. As a result s, water transportation was much
faster and cheaper. By 1827, wheat from central New York State could be bought for less money in
Savannah, Georgia, than wheat grown in Georgia. This apparently had a great influence upon New
York, stimulating the growth of economy. Such advantages for the North hurt the economies of
Southern states such as Georgia, as its prices were no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The South, like other slave based societies, did not construct urban centers for commerce, finance, and
industry on a scale rival with those found in the North. Southern cities, instead, were small as they
failed to develop diversified economies and rarely engaged in international trade. On the contrary,
southern cities primarily engaged in local trade. They marketed and transported cotton or other
agricultural crops, supplied local planters and farmers with such necessities as agricultural tools, and
produced manufactured goods, such as cotton gins, sold mostly to farmers. Southerners neglect
industry and transportation improvements, like the railroads and canals of New York and
Pennsylvania, due to the over reliance on slave based system. As a result, manufacturing and
transportation lagged far behind in comparison to the North . Despite falling further and further behind
in respect to economic growth, the south still managed to establish an aggressive sense of nationalism
that was entrenched in its belief of its distinguished character and its illusion about oppressing by
enemies (i.e. the North and blacks). The South began to consider itself more and more as the true
guardian of America s heritage. Southern tourists who ventured into the North viewed it as a alien and
remote land and

The Effectiveness of Mobile Computing Devices in Classroom...
The Effectiveness of Mobile Computing Devices in Classroom Instruction
Most schools, both local and international, are now venturing into using mobile computing devices for
classroom instruction. Thus, La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) pioneered the use of tablets in the
classrooms at the later part of 2012 and named this endeavor as the PERsonal Learning device
(PEARL) program. During its initial stage, students of the honors classes were selected as its
participants. On the following year around eight to nine sections in the High School level opted to join
the said program. However, during the course of the said program implementation, certain issues have
been raised that needed to be addressed by the school especially in the area of student learning. Based
on a study made by a group of LSGH High School teachers last February 2014 on the effectiveness of
using tablets in Grade 10 English classes, it has been observed that there is no distinct difference
between the non tablet and tablet classes in terms of student performance. This may be attributed to
the following: 1). there is no definite strategic plan made except for the roadmap on how the PEARL
program will be implemented. 2). the infrastructure set up was not carefully taken into consideration.
3). teachers have not been given enough training prior to its implementation. 4). the policies and
guidelines drafted on the students use of tablets were vague or lacking in terms of giving sanctions to
erring students.

The Influence Of Gangs In America
As a reader, I found thi¬¬s book very interesting and very easy to relate to. For me, life was not easy
growing up in Atlanta as a black male, as a child I consistently witnessed situations similar to what
Sudhir Venkatesh experienced such as gang beatings and the selling of illegal substances. Growing up
I moved homes and schools a few times and from this experience I learned that initially you will not
be accepted in a certain community, you have to slowly get accustomed to the norms before you are
welcomed in. Surprisingly the streets are a very judgmental place, just for being different Venkatesh
was called a Mexican and nigger when in fact he was neither. I can recall numerous circumstances
growing up when I was unfairly judged and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At one point in time Venkatesh himself stated that he was a hustler among hustlers, but unlike the
gang he wasn t hustling narcotics or money he was hustling participants. I seemed to me that
Venkatesh was using the gang members for his personal benefit since he received academic
advancements and praise. While studying communities, confidentiality is very important but in this
research Venkatesh breaks this rule because once he discovered that members of the gang had other
sources of income such as babysitting or prostitution. Venkatesh ends up telling JT and Ms. Baily
about his findings. This was a problem because after finding out about this information JT and Ms.
Baily felt like they were owed more money so they taxed people more money. I didn t like the way
Venkatesh considered himself a hustler among hustlers because while conducting research you should
be straight forward to the participates and tell them exactly what you are researching. Also, I hated
how Venkatesh handled the privacy of the residents of Robert Taylor because many people ended up
losing money that they could have used to support their family. I believe that everything in an
interview should stay between the interviewer and the

Comparing The Edible Woman And The Handmaid s Tale
A want is often described as a strong desire for something while a need is a necessity or something
required because of importance. In The Edible Woman and The Handmaid s Tale, Margaret Atwood
explores the world in which men are the center, and women are merely extras in society. In both
novels, the female protagonist has her practical needs met, but her more fundamental need for freedom
and love is not met, at least not initially. It takes a willingness to rebel against society a culture
controlled by men to secure those more basic needs. In the end, both protagonists attain complete
freedom through the love they find during the novel.
In The Edible Woman, Atwood describes the life of Marian McAlpin, a market research company
worker, who all of the sudden, unsettlingly realizes that her relationship with her boyfriend, Peter, is
getting more serious than she had previously thought. She tries to avoid this problem by running away,
but she accepts Peter s proposal to marry her later that night and succumbs to the male dominated
society in which women are destined to be married. Peter is the ideal husband, since he is a lawyer and

The sandinista Revolution Essay
During the forty three year Somoza dictatorship a revolution was proved inevitable. During the period
of the Somoza regime many conflicts between the government and the people arose. Some of these
conflicts were mainly with the National Guard, but in 1978 conflicts hit its climax. In 1978, Pedro
Joaquin Chamorro, a salient newspaper editor and leader to the Somoza opposition was assassinated;
it is believed that by one of Somoza s business man. This mans death gave a deep feeling of
commotion throughout the country, establishing a nation wide strike against the Somoza government.
The National Guard responded to the attacks by assassinating many civilians and violating many
others rights.

This victory sparked the general population, many uprisings followed. The National Guard did not
react well to these uprisings; many massacres came, and this made the general population angry. This
gave the Sandinistas an advantage; they were gaining many recruits for their revolution, and the
business class of Nicaragua supported the idea of ones again calling to a general national strike.
Negations to take Somoza out of power were developed by the United States, but these efforts where
crushed when Costa Rica, Venezuela, and Panama joined Cuban efforts and supported the Sandinistas.
The majority of the business class then decided that despite their Communist ideals, the Sandinistas
were the best option that they had, and supported them. On July, 19, 1979 Somoza was forced to
resign, and a forty three year dynasty came to an end. The government was the turned over to the
Council of National Reconstruction, which was selected by the Sandinistas.
The Sandinistas had appointed a broad based cabinet which included non Sandinistas to rebuild a
destroyed nation. Their goals were mainly to improve healthcare, literacy and land reforms for the
poor. It did not take much time to prove that power rested only on the Sandinistas. By 1980, all non
Sandinista leaders had left the government. The relation with the Catholic Church deteriorated greatly,
and the relation with the United States had been blocked. In

Standardized Testing Are A Waste Of Time Essay
Standardized Test Are a Waste of Time According to Diane Ravitch, Sometimes, the most brilliant and
intelligent minds do not shine in standardized tests because they do not have standardized minds. Her
point is that not every students mind operates the same way, so one test that all students must take
does not measure the student s actually abilities. Across the United States, standardized testing is a
popular method used to measure a student s academic ability and their college admission. These
exams have multiple choice questions and sometimes a writing section, which the examiners must
complete in a certain amount of time. Every year the tests get harder and harder, which causes anxiety
in the students. Standardized testing does not measure the skills students have learned and their
intelligence from school and life. The main purpose of testing is to set a standard and have a baseline

Schools should put more emphasis on the growth and development of a student, instead of ranking and
determining their worth based on test scores and grades. Standardized exams are an unreliable way to
grade students and prepare them for college. In addition, they do not teach or advocate life skills that
students need when they are developing and later on in life. As Albert Einstein has said, Everybody is
a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it
is stupid. Einstein s quote perfectly describes today s education system. Not everyone processes

Even though main argumentations against personal responsibility include the fact that many people

responsibility for something gives you something to measure up to. Personal responsibility is the key

can happen to you. They include you won t get a good paying job, or you won t advance in your
career. It all comes down to this; being responsible and doing well in school will make you happy.
College success is impossible without personal responsibility. (Fichtner, 2012)
Here are some suggestions to help you become successful in college. Start off with goals and a
preliminary plan that you can put into practice with your education. If you want to become a STAR,
write down these important words: specific, time, areas and reflect. Here is what these words mean.
Write down specific goals. Write goals in several time frames. Write your goals in several areas of
your life. Last, reflect on your goals. (Ellis, 2010, pg. 67 68) You can use several tools to help you
accomplish your goals. You can use your calendar or write a to do list. (Ellis, 2010, pg. 63, 71 86)
Take your time, brainstorm and evaluate what you have written down.

Impressions of the Meaning and Significance of African...
In his book African Religions and Philosophy professor John Mbiti continually explains that all
African cultures and societies, regardless of differences in national origin, language, or ethnicity are
deeply religious. African traditional religion is so much a part of the African traditional heritage that it
is found in every aspect of life. Traditional religion for the Africans is the normal way of looking at
the world and experiencing life itself. Therefore, as Mbiti interprets, A study of these religious systems
is, therefore, ultimately a study of the peoples themselves in all the complexities of both traditional
and modern life. (p.1). This statement, along with many others similar to it in the first few pages of
chapter one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, it is not unusual for an African Christian to participate in Christian religious practice by
going to church on Sunday and then to participate in African religious practice later on in the same
week.
At first this was something I did not truly understand because in my religion (Judaism) I believe we
are taught to only participate in the practice/rituals of one single faith, the Jewish faith. However, my
confusion was cleared up by professor Mbiti s following explanation:
It is not enough to learn and embrace a faith which is active once a week, either on Sunday or Friday,
while the rest of the week is virtually empty. It is not enough to embrace a faith which is confined to a
church building or mosque, which is locked up six days and opened only once or twice a week. Unless
Christianity and Islam fully occupy the whole person as much as, if not more than, traditional
religions do, most converts to these faiths will continue to revert to their old beliefs and practices for
perhaps six days a week, and certainly in times or emergency and crisis. (p.3)
When evaluating these statements in the context of what I had learned earlier regarding how African
traditional religions permeate every aspect of a person s life, everything in existence has actual or
potential religious significance, and that there is no dichotomy between

The Conditions Of The Marine Environment
Introduction:
The conditions of the marine environment place special demands on the design and use of a camera
(ERT Task Sheet, 2015). An average above surface camera cannot simply be made waterproof using a
camera housing in order to operate effectively underwater. There are special demands created by
various aspects of the marine environment for example, the lens must be designed specifically to
recorrect the distortion created by refraction and strobes must be placed away from the camera to
avoid backscatter. Refraction mainly occurs when underwater photographers use a flat port (Deep
Ocean Diving Underwater vision, n.d.). These factors would be the reason as to why the camera would
not produce accurate or high quality photographs of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to calculate the refractive index, this formula will be used: n_(1 2)=n_2/n_1 . For medium 1,
n_1 is the absolute refractive index and for medium 2, n_2 is the absolute refractive index (Refraction
of Light, 2015). When a light ray enters different medium, all molecules in that medium absorbs the
light and re emits it. This is why the light ray take longer to pass through. The more molecules the
more time the light will be absorbed and re emitted and therefore the longer it will take to pass
through. Due to this difference in densities and amount of time the light ray takes to pass through,
refraction occurs. This is when the light ray bends when it travels through two different mediums. This
affects underwater photography as refraction occurs and the object is distorted (Underwater Holdings,
2015).
Optical Underwater Issue: Refraction in Waterproof Camera Housing Underwater
Figure 2: Flat Port and Dome Port Underwater Refraction is one of the major issues when it comes to
underwater photography. Refraction is the apparent change in the speed of the light ray which results
to a change in the direction of the ray (Kwon, 2015). Once light travels from air to water, it slows
down as it come across the denser medium. This is a problem if all light rays could cross the dividing
line at right angles. Refraction can be encountered when light travels from air to

Large Trailer Analysis
Unfortunately, collisions involving large trucks and passenger vehicles are all too common on the
roads throughout North Carolina. In fact, the state s Department of Transportation reported that there
were more than 3,400 accidents involving semitrailers in 2013 alone. Due to the size differences
between the vehicles, such collisions often result in serious injuries, or death, for the occupants of
passenger vehicles. While not all trucking crashes can be avoided, there are steps that drivers can take
to reduce their odds of being involved in these types of accidents. Use caution when passing It is
obvious to most motorists that tractor trailers are much larger and longer than the average passenger

As a result, truckers may have to merge into the lanes to their left in order to make some right turns.
Drivers should be aware of this, and refrain from trying to squeeze in between these vehicles and the

or stopping According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, fully loaded tractor trailers can
weigh as much as 80,000 pounds. Due to their size and weight, these vehicles require significantly
more stopping distance than passenger cars, trucks and SUVs. In ideal conditions, large trucks
traveling at 55 mph need about 430 feet to stop. Consequently, truckers may not be able to adjust and
stop in time to avoid a collision if drivers suddenly slow or stop in front of them. Thus, it is
recommended that people be attentive to the road conditions and take precautions to avoid
unexpectedly stopping when driving in front of a semitrailer. Stay out of the

the acceptance of God into their life by answering a series of questions. Then a member of the church
immerses them in water. The procedure symbolises the spiritual rebirth or awakening which has taken
place in their lives and their will to follow Christ in life. 4. How does this practice express the beliefs
of Christianity? (refer to sacred texts, traditions and statements by leaders of various denominations)
Baptism tells us of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus and our very own death, burial and
resurrection. He who is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned

Examples Of Dualism In Snow Falling On Cedars
Welcome esteemed guests, ladies and gentlemen, today I am here at this forum to speak to you about
the power of the media, and the effect that it has on our lives. Like many things people experience, the
media can change an individual s perspective. It possesses the power to influence and sway existing
attitudes, values and beliefs on issues in society. By doing so, text creators are able to create a desired
context; an in invited reading in such was so that the audience has a narrow perspective. As such,
through the use of specific literary and cinematic techniques created by these invited readings, media
texts are able to persuade groups to favour values and ideas that align those of the text. The novel,

It can be inferred from the title that this cartoon is set in America, similar to the novel s setting. Like
Guterson s use of duality, the cartoon clearly contrasts the different social experiences between races
by posing the same scenario. In both frames respectively, a White and African American child propose
the same statement, I m goin out mom! . However, the difference between frames is the response by
the assumed mother. The view pertaining to the white child dictates a simple answer, put on your
jacket , whereas the African American view dictates the response in the first frame as well as measures
to prevent the attention of authorities. Clearly, Sargent s use of text implies that the African American
youth population experience a harsher life due to prejudice. This is demonstrated by just a fraction of
the instructions the African American child is given, don t make any sudden moves and keep your
mouth shut around police . This scenario of race and cultural difference is undeniably relatable to the
American and Japanese populations of Snow Falling on Cedars . Within the novel, after the attack on
pearl harbour, Fujiko huddles her daughters and delivers a line similar to that of assumed African
American mother in the cartoon, We bend our head, we bow and are silent, because we understand
that by ourselves, alone, we are nothing

What is Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)? Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is a common medical
disorder that is increasingly recognized in children almost 30 million American children are living
with SDB. SDB can range from frequent loud snoring to Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) a condition
involving repeated episodes of partial or complete blockage of the airway during sleep. When a child s
breathing is disrupted during sleep, their growing bodies are deprived of the one thing they need most
oxygen. In response, some children become restless, irritable, and hyperactive, while others

combination of the above. Additional Benefits for children Ortho Tain® ... Show more content on

It is designed to feel like a pacifier that helps to familiarize the child with the process of wearing a
device in their mouth every night. This initial device is typically worn anywhere from one to four
months before moving on to the next step. Daytime wear and extended treatment time could be
recommended depending on the child s specific habits and their severity. Step 2: Ortho Tain® for Kids
During the second phase, a device specifically sized for each child is also worn at night. It works to
gently guide the incoming permanent teeth into the appropriate places, correct jaw relations, and
expand the arches to make room for the larger incoming adult teeth. This helps to eliminate and
prevent any improper dentition. This device is worn for only about two to five months before the final
phase of treatment begins. Step 3: Ortho Tain® for Kids Once the child has at least four permanent
teeth in the mouth, the third and final treatment begins with a device used to accommodate the
incoming adult teeth. This is a vital stage in our treatment process because as the adult teeth are
forming, the gum tissue fibers are beginning to anchor these teeth in the mouth. When using this third
phase of treatment, the Perfect Start System ensures the adult teeth erupt into their proper position and
the natural fiber bundles are able to form, therefore locking them into the correct alignment. This
method works to prevent any new erupting

The South Is Seen As A Romanticize Version Of The United...
Mid Term Exam #3 The South is seen as a romanticize version of the United States. A place where
virtue, honor, and strong religious morals were upheld in common society. However, the recurring
themes that the South would have the role of being the ongoing rebel against most national policies
that gave any sign of hindering their way of life, the concept of individualism, yet keeping its own
societal identity. From the Revolutionary War onwards, the South has been developed as the shining
example of what an American should be like. Slavery was a huge attribute of Southern society, though
looked down upon by the world, it was practiced and eagerly defended by political logic and religious
zeal. One argument is made from a Senator ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The South has been criticized for practicing the archaic ways of slavery deeming it: barbaric,
inhumane, and out of touch with the changes of the world. The argument continues through George
Fitzhugh s Southern Thought, Labor pays all taxes, but labor in a slave society is property, and men
will take care of their property. In free society, labor is not property, and there is nothing to shield the
laborer from the grinding weight of taxation all of which he pays, because he produces everything
valuable. (Fitzhugh Southern Thought pg. 823) Furthermore, the identity the South identifies itself as
a place of self worth and pride in what your property can produce while enjoying the fruits of their
labors. A land where taxes cannot take away the riches and treasures that are produced in their fruitful
land. The South possessed identity, and with that identity came the sense of individualism. One of the
leading causes of the Civil War was the belief that the South s sense of individualism was in danger
and to be eradicated from the face of the United States. Ironically, during the Civil War the draft was
enacted into Southern conscriptions making it more of mandatory duty to southerners to join the
military. The first general American military draft was enacted by the Confederate government on
April 16, 1862, more than a year before the federal government did the same. The Confederacy took

Women in Athens Sparta
Women in Ancient Sparta amp; Athens
By: Tony Knuth
12/9/09
Historians have spent a long time attempting to establish what exactly life was like for women in
ancient Greece. Like all studies of ancient Greece, they focus primarily on the two most powerful city
states in the Hellenic world, Athens and Sparta. Since the majority of the primary documents deal with
these two cities, historians are only able to decipher a fragmentary view of what life was actually like
for the entirety of society, let alone what life was like for women specifically. Nevertheless,
researchers have dug through the chronicles of primary sources available in order to provide the most
accurate depiction of Greek women possible. Researchers generally start by ... Show more content on

In addition, CSUN Spartan women did not marry when they were of tender years, but [when] in their
full bloom and ripeness , allowing many of them to pursue their education for the same length of time
as modern students. They most likely learned cultural norms through differing types of performance
art, specifically choruses sung at festivals or during early plays, along with reading, arithmetic and
writing. The purpose of these performances by young maidens was twofold: first to entice young men
to marry, along with instilling both men and women with the idea of what a good Spartan should be.
In addition to having a great deal of freedom in education, Spartan women were also able to own land.
In his work Politics, Aristotle points out that about two fifths of the whole land are in the possession of
women . Women would generally obtain these properties through large dowries given in marriage, or
through inheritance as is evident when Aristotle laments the practice of giving large dowries saying it
would be better if there were no dowries, or if they were small or at any rate moderate . Women s
ability to become the sole proprietors of land was something relatively unheard of in the Hellenic
world, hence Aristotle s confusion and desire to reduce the amount of land held by them.
Athenian women s role was identical to that of Spartan women in respect to their importance in
reproduction. Thucydides states that Pericles encouraged procreation and saw a double

The Intellectual Inequality In H. G. Wells The Time Machine
In H.G. Wells novel The Time Machine, the unnamed protagonist, whom the narrator simply refers to
as the Time Traveller , states, It is a law of nature we overlook, that intellectual versatility is the
compensation for change, danger, and trouble... There is no intelligence where there is no change and
no need for change (pg. 65). The Time Traveller designs and creates a time machine to travel far into
the future, to the year eight hundred and two thousand seven hundred and one A.D., where he meets a
race of tranquil people, the Eloi (pp. 19, 24). He describes one of the first Eloi men that he meets once
he arrives in the future as follows: He was a slight creature¬ perhaps four feet high clad in purple
tunic, girdled at the waist with a leather belt. Sandals or buskins I could not clearly distinguish which
were on his feet; his legs were bare to the knees, and his head was bare (pg. 19). After spending some
time with the Eloi, the Time Traveller concludes that the entire race is simple minded. The Eloi live
uncomplicated lives, free from struggles, despair, and distress; the Eloi do not work either, the shop,
the advertisement, traffic, all that commerce which constitutes the body of our world, was gone (pg. ...

Economic Analysis for Coca Cola
Last year the U.S. economy was strong and nearly every part of it was growing and doing well.
However, things changed. Most economists loosely define a recession as two consecutive quarters of
contraction, or negative GDP growth. On Monday 26, the government officially declared that the U.S.
has been in recession since March. (CBS Market Watch. U.S. Officially in a recession. Rex Nutting.

However, because of aggressive action by the Federal Reserve and Congress it will be short and mild.
The economy will return to sustained, positive growth in the first half of 2002.
Future Outlooks
The Federal Reserve is doing all that it can help the economy recover. They have cut the interest rate
ten times this year. The rate now lies at a 40 year low of 2%. Lowering the interest rates will
ultimately excite consumer demand in the economy. Companies will expand and increase use of debt
as a result of the low borrowing rates. Coca Cola can borrow money for investing in other products as
the interest rates are low. It can use the borrowing on research of new products or technology. As
researching for new products would cost less the Coca Cola Company will sell its products for less

Quotes In Cool Hand Luke
Introduction: Nothing can be a really cool hand, once spoken by Luke, is one of the countless quotes
outlying Luke s persistent nature (Carroll and Rosenberg 1967). The movie, Cool Hand Luke, directed
by Stuart Rosenberg in 1967, is a movie about ultimate sacrifice. Luke, the protagonist of the story,
after being sentenced to two years for destruction of municipal property, constantly defied the prison s
regulations. He became a leader for the inmates, and ultimately was killed. Luke was a persistent
character, and never gave up fighting even when he had nothing. Paragraph 1: Luke can be described

not to beat again, which led the captain to believe he finally sent the message to Luke. Luke even says,
Calling it a job don t make it right, boss (Carroll Rosenberg 1967). Here, it appears that Luke has
given up for good, and he has succumbed to the prison s ways even though he makes the comment
that it is not right. This is not true though, and Luke once again packs his courage to escape again.
After he made his third escape by stealing a car, he was fatally shot. Even when he was caught, Luke
did not surrender. He walked out, but he never put his hands up to surrender and was shot while once
again defying the cops. Dragline put his hands up, and while they both walked out of the building,
Luke never once gave the impression that he was surrendering to the prison s system. In all three
attempts at escaping he never gave up, and each time he tried harder to get away proving his

World War 2 Dbq Analysis
During World War 2, the Treaty of Versailles was unfair to the axis powers. Inflation and war debt just
made things worse. The German population wanted a leader who could save them from this misery, so
they chose Hitler and that s how Germany became powerful after its fall, and how Hitler began his
control over Europe. Appeasement is to make someone less angry by agreeing to their demands.
Collective security is the cooperation of several countries in an alliance to strengthen the security of
each. The war was brought and the best response to aggression was collective security. In 1939, there
was a Second World War. The Munich Agreement caused many disagreements between countries. It
was performed so that it would satisfy Hitler s passion, and soon bring security for Europe. However,

All Quiet On The Western Front Nature Analysis
Gaby Rizk
Mrs. Trimble
ELA 20F/10 2
27 October, 2016
Comfort in Nature In the horrible first war, soldiers often found peace and comfort in nature. In Erich
Maria Remarque s novel All Quiet on the Western Front many soldiers are often drawn to nature to
provide comfort and peace. Young Paul Baumer, the central character in the novel, frequently looks to
nature for comfort in the midst of the war going on around him. Remarque reveals in this novel that it
is possible to make a connection to something so pure while in the midst of something horrific and
unnatural like war. Paul experiences the death of his close friend (Keimmerich), but in nature, he finds
comfort and is empowered. This is shown when Paul states, I breathe as deep as I can, and feel the
breeze in my face, warm and soft as never before (33). This passage shows how Paul looks to nature
for comfort in times where he is sad or angry. Instead of thinking about his comrade s death, he goes
outside and enjoys the nature around him. As a result of this he is no longer sad about his comrade s
death. Another passage that shows how he becomes empowered through nature is, The earth is
streaming with forces which pour into me through the soles of my feet (33). Here it is shown to the
reader just how much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This connection is revealed in the novel through the character of Paul Baumer. From the earth, from
the air, sustaining forces pour into us mostly from the earth. To no man does the earth mean so much
as to the soldier (55). Paul explains how much the earth and the connection to earth means to the
soldier in war in this passage. In a greater sense, nature can be used to comfort people in the real
world because of its elements; the sounds that are heard, the things that can be seen and other things in
nature. In conclusion, nature really is

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Electronic Media
1.0 Introduction
In the 1970s and 1980s, books, newspapers, and magazines were printed on large presses by national
and multinational publishing houses. Print was a flourishing industry that had managed to overcome
any challengers, including television and the radio. Any legitimate writer, academic researcher,
scientist, or journalist was published in print. For those seeking the most up to date, respected, and
accurate information, books, periodicals, and newspapers were the chosen source. This is as it had
been for many years, and it seemed that this would be so for hundreds of years to come. Until, when in
the early 1990s, a relatively unheard of new technology called the Internet, which had begun in the
early 1960s as a government and scientific computer network, began to emerge on college campuses
and in other areas (Courtright, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, we can conclude that these media have a massive contribution in the process of mass
communications. Although, that many people thought that traditional media would be replaced and
converged or digital media would take over or supplant the old media, nevertheless then the old media
still existing. But to neglect or ignore that, the books, for example, cannot be replaced by television,
while the attraction of internet and web cannot fully overtake the fascination of newspapers and
magazines, because nowadays we can see that people are still buying newspaper and hard copy books
since it fulfils their needs and fits in their lifestyle. Digital media have not replaced printed media, but
they have taken over a large portion of the audience. As, technological innovations surface and are
adopted into our daily lives, old habits do change. One thing that will not change is the audience s
desire to get news, information and entertainment via mass media, whether that means paper delivery

Sexual Promiscuity In Rome
To all appearances, it remains underrated how much sexual pleasure surrounds the general Roman
populace as the spirit of lust happens as part of everyday life in early Rome and invasively arises
encircling everything. Essentially, the Empire s resident s experiences the visual manifestation in
hundreds of statues of false gods, and pagan temples. Furthermore, the assortment of continuous
festivals for the gods and goddesses helps excite its countless worshippers that were always swarming
the streets. Carved friezes decorate building frontages, depicting everything from daily activities to
nude pagan gods. Wall, floor and ceiling murals in homes and buildings commonly depict erotic
scenes. Various Italian cities, dating fifty years after the time of Jesus, demonstrate how sex

Perceptibly, in view of the sexual promiscuity of the time, it became the only alternative to usher in a
new way of thinking about people s sexual beings. More than any other religious leader, Jesus Christ
consistently forewarns how spiritually real the evil of Satan/devils were and verbally addresses the
issue. The authors of the Gospels intertwine Jesus attacks toward Satan s spiritual presence that is
magnified in His teachings. On the other hand, within most other religions, such as the Jewish Old
Testament, the surface position of Satan is significantly lacking; besides the Book of Job, the name of
Satan occurs in just a few other books. In addition, note the word devils comes forth in only four other
verses; seemingly having a direct connection with goat devils about whoring, sacrificing, and
murdering children. On the contrary, in the King James Version of the Bible; in the New Testament,
Satan occurs 37 times and devil(s) are occurs 112

  • 3. The Signs Of Shopping By Malcolm Gladwell To be successful in a capitalistic government, you must be willing to step on the heads of those who are below you, and claim their successes as your own. Advertisements within our capitalistic culture act as a way to force the customer into buying what the corporate overlords want you to buy. Anne Norton, author of The Signs of Shopping is a heavily published author, and has earned many awards in her field. In her essay, she explains how businesses use advertisement techniques to increase the profits in a retail store. Malcolm Gladwell, the author of The Science of Shopping is a staff writer for the New Yorker. In his essay, he explains how Paco Underhill, a retail expert, taught many Forbes 500 companies how to create more opportunities to up sale to their customers. Norton shows how malls and other shopping outlets only want one demographic to shop in their stores, and Gladwell shows how stores utilize their internal structure to make more money. Both utilize a negative tone toward the business practices shown in the articles, and demonstrate the manipulation of the consumer with the usage of imagery within advertisements to show that capitalism is unethical. Manipulation of consumers in stores and other establishments, is at a new high. Capitalism acts as the encouragement to large corporations to use these controversial practices. Norton uses blunt language and Gladwell explains the significance of retail to show how capitalism encourages manipulation. Norton used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Drought Of The Western United States WP 4 The drought in the western United States is a nationwide concern that directly affects every person in California. It is every person s responsibility to use water sustainably and no college, including the University of Southern California, is an exception. Rather than lagging behind sustainable water usage, USC should be at the forefront of it. On the surface of USC s environmental sustainability campaign, it seems as if they are making sweeping changes; however directly under the first layer of facts there are holes in their plan. If USC made small changes to both their resident hall and landscaping water use, they could not only save money but also better USC s environmentally friendly status. Regardless of whether or not California is in a drought, USC should still strive to be a model for water sustainability because it would not only better the school s reputation of being a green university, but it would also save money. From a wider scope of things, water usage is important for more reasons than solely the drought in California. As the world s population nears 7.4 billion people, more people are born each day compared to how many pass away. Looking at the world s total volume of water, only 2.5% of it is drinkable fresh water. Furthermore, 70% of that freshwater is frozen. With an every increase population like the one we have today, it is likely that water will become the most important resource to mankind. The problem lies in the way the fresh water is ... Three political parties in America are Republicans, Democrats, and the Green party. Tax reform, environmental issues, welfare and poverty, and immigration are all issues that different parties view from different angles. Tax reform has been an integral part of American politics since the nation s birth. The Boston Tea Party was an initial display of how strongly the colonists felt about taxes. Today, citizens feelings towards taxes can be expressed through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As more scientific evidence has surfaced in recent years in relevance to global warming, many informed individuals feel as though the environment is an important political issue. The Republican party stresses that conservation is a conservative value and private property ownership is key to an environmental agenda. The Democratic party aims to restore wilderness and watersheds for generations to come. However, they honor hunting fishing heritage via more conservation lands. The Green party advocates strongly for environmental issues, as made clear by their name. This party believes that: the Human species has no right to exploit animals, sustainable society lives within planet s resource limits, and we should safely dispose of all waste we create. In 1825, New York opened the Erie Canal, which connected the five Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Northern states like Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio also invested large amounts of money to build a network of canals connecting the Mississippi to the Great Lakes. As a result s, water transportation was much faster and cheaper. By 1827, wheat from central New York State could be bought for less money in Savannah, Georgia, than wheat grown in Georgia. This apparently had a great influence upon New York, stimulating the growth of economy. Such advantages for the North hurt the economies of Southern states such as Georgia, as its prices were no ... The South, like other slave based societies, did not construct urban centers for commerce, finance, and industry on a scale rival with those found in the North. Southern cities, instead, were small as they failed to develop diversified economies and rarely engaged in international trade. On the contrary, southern cities primarily engaged in local trade. They marketed and transported cotton or other agricultural crops, supplied local planters and farmers with such necessities as agricultural tools, and produced manufactured goods, such as cotton gins, sold mostly to farmers. Southerners neglect industry and transportation improvements, like the railroads and canals of New York and Pennsylvania, due to the over reliance on slave based system. As a result, manufacturing and transportation lagged far behind in comparison to the North . Despite falling further and further behind in respect to economic growth, the south still managed to establish an aggressive sense of nationalism that was entrenched in its belief of its distinguished character and its illusion about oppressing by enemies (i.e. the North and blacks). Thus, La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) pioneered the use of tablets in the classrooms at the later part of 2012 and named this endeavor as the PERsonal Learning device (PEARL) program. During its initial stage, students of the honors classes were selected as its participants. On the following year around eight to nine sections in the High School level opted to join the said program. However, during the course of the said program implementation, certain issues have been raised that needed to be addressed by the school especially in the area of student learning. Based on a study made by a group of LSGH High School teachers last February 2014 on the effectiveness of using tablets in Grade 10 English classes, it has been observed that there is no distinct difference between the non tablet and tablet classes in terms of student performance. This may be attributed to the following: 1). there is no definite strategic plan made except for the roadmap on how the PEARL program will be implemented. 2). the infrastructure set up was not carefully taken into consideration. 3). teachers have not been given enough training prior to its implementation. 4). the policies and guidelines drafted on the students use of tablets were vague or lacking in terms of giving sanctions to erring students. ... While studying communities, confidentiality is very important but in this research Venkatesh breaks this rule because once he discovered that members of the gang had other sources of income such as babysitting or prostitution. In The Edible Woman and The Handmaid s Tale, Margaret Atwood explores the world in which men are the center, and women are merely extras in society. In both novels, the female protagonist has her practical needs met, but her more fundamental need for freedom and love is not met, at least not initially. It takes a willingness to rebel against society a culture controlled by men to secure those more basic needs. In the end, both protagonists attain complete freedom through the love they find during the novel. At first this was something I did not truly understand because in my religion (Judaism) I believe we are taught to only participate in the practice/rituals of one single faith, the Jewish faith. However, my confusion was cleared up by professor Mbiti s following explanation: It is not enough to learn and embrace a faith which is active once a week, either on Sunday or Friday, while the rest of the week is virtually empty. It is not enough to embrace a faith which is confined to a church building or mosque, which is locked up six days and opened only once or twice a week. An average above surface camera cannot simply be made waterproof using a camera housing in order to operate effectively underwater. There are special demands created by various aspects of the marine environment for example, the lens must be designed specifically to recorrect the distortion created by refraction and strobes must be placed away from the camera to avoid backscatter. In order to calculate the refractive index, this formula will be used: n_(1 2)=n_2/n_1 . For medium 1, n_1 is the absolute refractive index and for medium 2, n_2 is the absolute refractive index (Refraction of Light, 2015). When a light ray enters different medium, all molecules in that medium absorbs the light and re emits it. This is why the light ray take longer to pass through. The more molecules the more time the light will be absorbed and re emitted and therefore the longer it will take to pass through. Due to this difference in densities and amount of time the light ray takes to pass through, refraction occurs. This is when the light ray bends when it travels through two different mediums. This affects underwater photography as refraction occurs and the object is distorted (Underwater Holdings, 2015). Optical Underwater Issue: Refraction in Waterproof Camera Housing Underwater Figure 2: Flat Port and Dome Port Underwater Refraction is one of the major issues when it comes to underwater photography. Refraction is the apparent change in the speed of the light ray which results to a change in the direction of the ray (Kwon, 2015).
