Do you know the classification of verbs?
How do you identify verbs in a sentence?
Verbs
Verbs have traditionally been defined as
words or a combination of words that
indicate action, a state of being or condition.
It is the part of a sentence that tells us what
the subject performs, or what the subject is
doing.
´´Verbs are the hearts of English
sentences´´.

c) Phrasal verbs
Action verbs
They indicate what the subject of
a sentence performs. Action
verbs can make the
listener/reader feel emotions,
see scenes more vividly and
accurately.
An action verb is a verb that
describes an action,
like run, jump, kick, eat, break, c
ry, smile, or think.
According to what they
express
Verbs in English can be classified into two
categories: stative verbs
and dynamic verbs. Dynamic verbs
(sometimes referred to as "action verbs")
usually describe actions we can take, or
things that happen; stative verbs usually
refer to a state or condition which is not
changing or likely to change. The
difference is important, because stative
verbs cannot normally be used in the
continuous (BE + ING) forms.
Dynamic
Actions performed
(physically or mentally) by
a person, animal or object.
The ballerinas are leaping
gracefully across the
stage.
We were learning about
cacti at school yesterday.
Stative
Describe a state of being,
such as what something is,
feels, or possesses. They
cannot typically be used
with the continuous
tenses.

Auxiliary verbs:
Also known as a helping verb, determines the
mood or tense of another verb. Auxiliary verbs are
divide into:
1. Primary auxiliaries: be, have, and do.
2. Modal auxiliaries: can, could, will, must, etc.
Examples: “It will rain tonight”
“Jen is taking a shower”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXc-xy2Y7oY
Lexical verbs: They are the main carriers of meaning in a spoken
utterance or written sentence. They are the most
numerous type of words and they are all members of
open classes.
Example: More lexical words can be invented and
added – in principle, there is no upper limit.
Also known as a main verb, conveys a real meaning
and doesn´t depend on another verb. Examples:
“It rained all night”
“The policeman caught the robber”
Linking verbs
Verbs that serve as a
connection between a subject
and further information about
that subject. They do not show
any action; rather, they “link”
the subject with the rest of the
sentence. The verb to be is the
most common linking verb, but
there are many others,
including all the sense verbs.
Examples
All forms of to
be (am, is, are,
was, were, has
been, are
being, might
be, etc.)
Others
All senses verbs
and others such
as become,
seem, feel, look,
appear, remain,
grow, etc.
