Dialogue initiated with MALR on the
‘cooperative reform’
Scaling up of the techniques tested by ICARDA:

Participation on the CIRAD studies on the typology of
small farmers
Continuation/completion of activities initiated in 2014
Close follow-up to the ‘1 Million feddan’ development
programme (1/3 of the surface dedicated to the youth
employment)

1. Evidence-based policy and strategies to improve and enhance
the small-scale agricultural sector and related livelihood.

Assist small scale women and men producers to enhance productivity in
crop and livestock production
Within the framework of the Global Strategy for Improving Rural and
Agricultural Statistics, develop methodologies for measuring post-harvest
losses
Support to promotion and adoption of agroforestry, trees outside forests
and improving soil carbon sequestration for adaptation to climate change
Study on soil carbon sequestration and crop residue management for
climate change mitigation/adaptation
Food Losses and Waste - Reduction and Value Chain Development for
Food Security in Egypt and Tunisia
Printing and distribution of FAO Technical Publication No. 589 in support of
small-scale aquaponic development (integrated fish and vegetable
culture)
5. 2. Sustainable improvement of productivity of small-scale
agriculture, aiming at youth inclusiveness in the agricultural sector
On-going activities/Next steps:
By December 2015:
Support RNE countries for adoption and implementation of the
participatory extension as effective tool for IPM knowledge and skills
sharing
Promote the cost-effective and safe alternatives pest management
practices against the key pests among the small scale farmers
Integrated mechanized raised-bed production package
Small scale grey-water system for irrigation
Gender, socioeconomics, and Impact Assessment of water saving
technological solutions
6. 3. Empowerment of institutions and smallholders, through the
support to enabling environments for economically viable and
sustainable development in small-scale agriculture.

By June 2015:
Support countries / institutions to build capacity to practice improved
land use planning at local and watershed level
By December 2015:
Regional workshop to evaluate and enhance the IPM-FFSs experience in
the region to support small scale farmers in the region
