Sustainable development aims to meet current needs without compromising the needs of future generations. It involves using resources in a way that prevents them from running out, and making investments, technology and institutions consistent with both present and future needs. Sustainable development has three parts - environmental sustainability to protect the environment's capacity to support life, economic sustainability to optimally employ existing resources over the long term, and social sustainability to develop community structures that maintain a healthy society for current and future members.
