6. What is Hyroglyphics?- It consist of pictures of familiar objects that represent sounds. - They were used in ancient Egypt as a means of written communication.

9. Approximately 5,000 years ago a new kind of writing system was used.

10. The first known alphabet was made by Egyptians. They made 22 symbols that matched some of their sounds. These symbols were called hieroglyphs. Copy these hierogryphs in your Student Challenge Books, box 4.

11. In English there are now 26 letters that are used to represent all words. They are made by rearranging a few basic shapes of lines, curves and circles, and dots.

12. In our alphabetical writing system, these letters represent sounds, not words, and the sounds are put together to make hundreds and hundreds of words.

Refer to the hieroglyphics table, write with the hieroglyphics to spell a 3-letter word and see if your partner can decipher it.
