Hrant Dink : Imposant
l’assassinat.

Sirousho au concours du World Music
Ovsanna Kaloustian : « Dieu m’a

Khatchatourian a reçu plusieurs
nouveaux articles dès les premiers
jours de son activité en 2014,
lorsque le compositeur Konstantin
Orbelian s’est rendu au musée. Le
musée Aram Khatchatourian a été
créé en 1978, juste après la mort du
compositeur.

d’appel turque, Nihat Omeroglu,

Freedom of speech
laws made to order
By Edmond Y. Azadian
Laws, especially international laws,
which are meant to govern harmonious relations between nations, are
fashioned to fit the interests of the
power brokers; they are like made-toorder garments or shoes, designed to
fit the specific size of powerful nations
or classes.
The most typical observation of this
unjust system was made by the 17thcentury French fabulist Jean de La
Fontaine, who said, “The powerful of
this world will win very argument.”
Now, the Armenians — the weak
ones in this allegory — are facing the
much stronger European Court of
Human Rights, which passed a judgment last December that Dogu
Perinçek, president of the Workers’
Party of Turkey, cannot be condemned legally for saying publically in
Geneva that “the so-called Armenian
Genocide is an imperialist lie.”
This judgment, in the first place, is
a slap in the face of the Swiss judicial
system, which had indicted Perinçek
for denying the Armenian Genocide.
The incident had taken place in 2007
and since the European Court had
kept silent; one may wonder what had
happened suddenly for the court to
have overruled Swiss law?
The coincidence is unmistakable.
For many years Armenia was negotiating with the European Union, but early
last September, it made a U-turn and
decided to join the Customs Union,
headed by Russia. Therefore, that was
partly a political decision, not necessarily judicial. The bigwigs at the
European Court will try to convince
ordinary people otherwise. Now the
Coordination Council of Armenian
Organizations of France (CCAF) has
launched a petition asking Switzerland
to appeal the most recent judgment of
the European Court. It is certainly an
uphill battle with dubious results
anticipated.
The argument of the European
Court is based on the presumption
that the law infringes upon the right of
free speech when it comes to
Genocide denial.
France provides the typical example of the discriminatory application
of the freedom of speech laws.
Whereas the Gayssot law is in full
force to prosecute Holocaust deniers,
the parallel law which the French parliament had adopted against the denial
of the Armenian Genocide was struck
down by the French Constitutional
Court, before the last presidential
elections. The law was a victim of
political machinations as both candi-
dates had pledged to support it.
Armenians all around the world
became the witnesses of both candidates’ impassioned support for the
law; Francois Hollande and then
incumbent, President Nicholas
Sarkozy were beating their chests at
Armenian gatherings almost to bring
tears to your eyes, that they would
approve the law passed by the French
parliament. Sarkozy delayed his signature in a cowardly manner to allow
time for some parliament members to
muster support and put to action the
seldom-used Constitutional Court to
declare the law unconstitutional and
against the principles of freedom of
speech. The current president, Mr.
Hollande, seemed equally sincere in
his pledge to revive the law, but he has
yet to act on his pledge. One does not
need to be a legal expert to extrapolate that if the Gayssot law is not an
impediment against the principle of
free speech, the ban of genocide
denial falls exactly in the category of
similar reasoning.
Some politicians — like Israeli
President Shimon Peres — argue that
the massacre of the Armenians does
not amount to be called genocide, in
order to avoid comparison with the
Holocaust and continue the discriminatory application of laws against
genocide versus Holocaust denials.
France has been a beacon of free
thinking and free speech throughout
the centuries and those ideals are best
encapsulated in the writings of French
philosopher Voltaire, one of whose
famous quotes, can be roughly translated to “I totally disagree with what
you say, but I am prepared to fight
until death to protect your right to
say it.”
But today the French courts do not
follow Voltaire’s Enlightenment philosophy; instead they are guided by
their political agenda. Indeed, these
days, another scandal is gripping the
French media and the courts are after
a popular comedian, Dieudonne (God
given) M’Bala M’Bala.
The French courts and the government, which are so interested in zealously protecting the citizens’ freedom
of speech, have been after Dieudonne
to ban his appearances on TV and in
public venues, free speech notwithstanding as he is accused of being antiSemitic. These days criticizing the
actions of the Israeli government
against the Palestinians can be labeled
anti-Semitic.
The issue here is not to defend
Dieudonne, who has mocked and
denigrated the Holocaust and its victims as well as coming up with his

ISTANBUL—Thousands gathered in Istanbul to mark the seventh anniversary of the killing of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink on Jan. 19, the
Hurriyet Daily News reports.
The Friends of Hrant Dink organization, established in memory of the late
journalist, called for a march starting at 1:30 pm from Taksim Square, which
ended with a homage to Dink in front of the Agos newspaper’s office building in
the Pangaltı neighborhood.
The crowd marched to the front of Armenian weekly Agos, where Hrant Dink
was murdered in broad daylight by a 17-year-old nationalist in 2007.
At 2:56 p.m., a one minute silence in memory of Dink was observed, after
which Gülten Kaya, the widow of late singer Ahmet Kaya, took the microphone.
Kaya commemorated not only Dink, but also those who were killed during the
Gezi Park protests.
The marchers chanted the slogan “We are here, brother” in Armenian, “For
Hrant, for justice,” and “We are all Armenians,” in front of the Agos office. A
popular chant from the Gezi Park protests, “Everywhere is Taksim, everywhere
is resistance,” was also heard.
After the meeting ended, the crowd marched to Taksim.
The Dink murder case remains unsolved, with the court ruling that it was not
a result of an organized crime to the dismay of Dink’s family and supporters.
The organizers of the commemorative march also denounced the trial
process, accusing the state of protecting those responsible for the murder.
OSCE calls for justice
The masterminds behind the murder of Hrant Dink must be brought to justice,
said the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media in a statement on Jan.
19. The Representative noted that a retrial is ongoing, following the ruling by
Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals in May 2013, which acknowledged that
there was a criminal conspiracy to silence the journalist.
“Hrant Dink was a courageous journalist who advocated for peace and
minority rights through his writings,” the Representative said. “Every society
should be proud of such outstanding individuals and do their best to protect
them and their right to free expression.”

Thousands gather at Yerablur for
Artsakh Hero’s funeral
On Jan. 22 Artsakh President
Bako Sahakian, accompanied by
the Republic’s leadership, visited
St. Jacob Church in the capital,
Stepanakert, and took part in a
requiem mass in memory of the
Karabakh Defense Army’s Junior
Sergeant Armen Hovhannisyan
who heroically perished while
rebuffing an attack by Azerbaijani subversive subdivisions, the
President’s press office reported.
On behalf of the people of Artsakh,
President Sahakian expressed deep
condolences to Hovhannisyan’s family
on the irretrievable loss of the young
soldier. According to the President,
Armen Hovhannisyan and his brothers
in arms demonstrated extreme devotion to the Fatherland and utmost mastery of military science, once again
proving that the Artsakh Republic’s
armed forces are able to oppress any
act of enemy’s aggression.
President Sahakian considered
Azerbaijan’s behavior highly destructive and terrorist in nature, underlining that it was a serious blow to the
maintenance of stability and peace in
the region and the efforts of the international community directed towards
the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
The Junior Sergeant Armen
Hovhannisyan was buried on January
22 in the Yerablur Pantheon accompanied by an honorary escort and military orchestra and thousands of people.
Junior Sergeant Armen L. Hovhannisyan died from the wounds he received during the exchange of fire in
the north-eastern region.
On Jan. 20 Artsakh Republic

Hollande’s visit marks the first time a French president has visited Turkey in
22 years.
Gul, on the other hand, said that the matter should be addressed by historians. “This issue can not be tackled unilaterally” he said.
In 2000, France recognized the Armenian Genocide. In 2011 both branches of
the French legislature approved a bill to criminalize the denial of the Armenian
Genocide in France. The French Constitutional Court deemed elements of the
bill unconstitutional.
Hollande was asked if he would pursue the passage of such a bill, to which
the French president said: “We will do what is right and only what is right.”
While in Turkey, Hollande is expected to meet with Hrant Dink’s widow,

of his comments. In fact, Armenians,
especially, must take offense at his
foul statements. But the French courts
have gone to unusual lengths to
silence Dieudonne and trample on his
right to free speech.
On January 6, 2014, France’s
Interior Minister Manuel Valls said
that performances considered antiSemitic might be banned by local officials. In support of this measure, Valls
has sent a three-page memo to all prefects of police in France titled “The
Struggle against Racism and antiSemitism, demonstration and public
reaction, performances by Mr.
Dieudonne M’Bala M’Bala.”
With respect to freedom of speech
in France and banning scheduled performances ahead of time, Valls has
said, “The struggle against racism and
anti-Semitism is an essential concern
of the government and demands vigorous action.” The minister takes note of
the liberty of expression in France but

cumstances, the police are invested
with the power to prohibit an event if
its intent is to prevent “a grave disturbance of public order” and cites the
1993 law supporting the decision.
Even President Hollande, taking
some time between his visits to his
mistress and his girlfriend, offered his
support to the interior minister, urging
“the representatives of the state, in
particular the prefects, to be vigilant
and inflexible” in the face of “all the
violations of the principals of the
Republic.”
Incidentally, Mr. Dieudonne is of
African descent, born in France to a
Cameroonian father and a French
mother. We cannot be sure if that
aspect has cast him as a second-class
citizen in France.
Time and again, the Armenian community in France has demonstrated
robust political activism. And despite
all its internal divisions, its members
have been able to unite their forces for
common causes. But a serious question begs an answer: have they been
able to mobilize the 400,000-strong
Armenian community as a political
force to combat the discriminatory
laws made for the mighty?
“I like when girls look natural”
“Don’t straighten your hair! Your natural curly hair looks great!”
“Oh my God, she has so much makeup on”
I used to be one of those people who agreed with these types of sentences. I used to say these things too. But recently, I realized that it is the
most annoying thing in the world to hear. Truth is, a girl’s appearance is no
one’s business but her own.
If a girl does not like a particular aspect of her skin, she will cover it up
so that she will not have to think about it. It can be simple concealer to hide
dark circles from black circles, or it can be 3 layers of foundation to hide
blemishes. There is nothing shameful in her wanting to feel better about her
skin. She takes care of herself the way she feels like it.
Why is natural better, anyway? What are we people afraid of? That too
much makeup will hide the person’s true identity? How can one person’s
choice of eye-shadow affect your own personal comfort? How can someone’s blue hair offend you? If that girl in the mirror looks in the mirror and
likes what she sees, then nothing else in the world matters. It’s up to
nobody but her to decide what makes her look pretty.
Another point I’d like to raise is the problem of curly hair. Curly hair is
great. Curly hair is fantastic. It is cool and funky and you can do whatever
you want with it. It is also incredibly complicated to deal with. Personally,
I have to go through a series of rituals every time I get out of my shower to
make sure that my hair looks nice. Plus, there’s always a 50/50 chance that
they will be ruined during my sleep. So straightening my hair is a less stressful alternative. And plus, I like it. What I don’t like, though, is people telling
me my curly hair looks nicer and that I should just let them be. I do what I
want with my hair in order to feel satisfied about it.
Bottom line: the idea of natural beauty is good only and only if the natural look is what makes you happiest. If it doesn’t, well, you’re allowed to do
whatever you want with yourself.

Armenian-language
newspaper launched
in Tbilisi
TBILISI (ArmRadio) — The first
issue of Ardzagank, a new Armenianlanguage newspaper, has been published in Tbilisi. The paper covers issues
regarding Armenian-Georgian relations, the important political and social
processes taking place in Georgia, and the life of the Georgian-Armenian community. “We aimed to create a reliable source of information for Georgian
Armenians,” editor of the newspaper Levon Isakhanyan told Public Radio of
Armenia. Ardzagank will be published in Georgian and Russian, as well. The
paper’s website, www.ardzagank.ge, will be launched in the near future.
