Have you ever felt like you’re
getting nowhere on a dreaded
treadmill of boredom?

Once students see
the phrasal verbs in
context, we must
elicit meaning
and get them
thinking so that
the new phrases
become part of
their mental
language map.
1)What does Super Gran like to do before she goes out?
2) Why do you think she likes to do this?
3) What would happen if she didn’t do this?
(elicit possible meanings for ‘rush out’…….)
4) Super Gran thinks it’s a bad idea to hurry and not take care
of her appearance. Do you agree with this?
5) Do you ever rush out, and if you do, what happens?
6) Do you forget things or wear your shirt on back to front?
7) Think of a time you rushed out and tell the class about it.
Describe anything funny, embarrassing or ridiculous that
happened.
1) Why did the police take away Super Gran’s licence?
2) Do your teachers ever take away your mobile phone in
class?
3) What would happen if they didn’t take away your
phones?
4) Do you think that teachers should or shouldn’t take
away your phones?
5) What would you do if you saw a baby about to eat
something dangerous?
Different ways to look at phrasal verbs.
1) Randomly through story-telling, movie clips, songs and
according to lists in course books.
2) Phrasal family groups on mind maps, stories, word clouds,
etc.
3) Phrasals with multiple meanings.
For me I use approach number one if I have to cover what’s
in the unit, approaches two and three for revision,
recycling, fluency, memory work and test practice.
Sometimes the

Transforming transformations
Key word transformations almost always
have phrasal verbs and expressions tied into
the grammatical transformation. It’s important to
have students using these structures with phrasal verbs
before they ever have to face them in practice
test conditions or even before they know that
they are part of testing.

Transforming transformations
We can:
1) Put well-known structures into comic strips.
Example so/such/tenses etc.
2) A great way to do this is to put the sentence structures
into caption boxes and then add blank speech bubbles.
Students can then be asked to fill in the story using certain
phrasal verbs but all based on their own imaginations. These can be
done as whole class collaborative stories until they are able to
create their own.
3) After wards teacher can take their stories and
