Content Standards

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as
     taking apart and taking from.

1. Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings2, sounds (e.g.,
        claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

2. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using
        objects or drawings to represent the problem.
Addition
Addition occurs when you join two
 numbers together. These numbers
         are called addends.


     4 + 2 = ?

      Addends
You add the two addends together to get
                a sum.



        4 + 2 = 6
                         Sum

Subtraction

Subtraction occurs when you take one
  number away from another number.


       5 - 2 = ?
When you subtract the numbers, you end
       up with the difference.


        5 - 2 = 3

 always draw pictures to help you
        solve the problem.

Content Standards Operations and Algebraic Thinking Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from. 1. Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings2, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. 2. Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
  • 4. Addition Addition occurs when you join two numbers together. These numbers are called addends. 4 + 2 = ? Addends
  • 5. You add the two addends together to get a sum. 4 + 2 = 6 Sum
  • 7. Subtraction Subtraction occurs when you take one number away from another number. 5 - 2 = ?
  • 8. When you subtract the numbers, you end up with the difference. 5 - 2 = 3 Difference
  • 10. A Strategy When adding or subtracting, you can always draw pictures to help you solve the problem. + =
