13 The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful Peter Elbow [A chapter in Nurturing the Peacemakers in Our Students: A Guide to Teaching Peace, Empathy, and Understanding. Chris Weber, editor. Heinemann, 2006. The present version contains a few short passages that had to be cut for space reasons in the published version.] Don Quixote says he admires Sancho Panza because he doubts everything and he believes everything. In the chapter before this, Chris Weber suggests ways to help students speak their minds, listen well, and engage in nonadversarial dialogue rather than debate. His suggestions focus on outward behavior. In this essay, I will move inward to the mysterious dimension of thinking and feeling. I’ll start by asking you to imagine that you are looking at an inkblot (for examples, ask Google Images for “inkblots”). Imagine that you see something in it that interests and pleases you-- -but your colleagues or classmates don’t see what you see. In fact they think you are crazy or disturbed for seeing it. What would you do if you wanted to convince them that your interpretation makes sense? If it were a matter of geometry, you could prove you are right (or wrong!). But with inkblots, you don’t have logic’s leverage. Your only hope is to get them to enter into your way of seeing---to have the experience you are having. You need to get them to say the magic words: “Oh now I see what you see.” This means getting them to exercise the ability to see something differently (i.e., seeing the same thing in multiple ways), and also the willingness to risk doing so (not knowing where it will lead). In short, you need them to be flexible both cognitively and emotionally. You can’t make people enter into a new way of seeing, even if they are capable of it. Perhaps your colleagues or classmates are bothered by what you see in the inkblot. Perhaps they think it’s aberrant or psychotic. If you want them to take the risk, your only option is to set a good example and show that you are willing to see it the way they see it. From Inkblots to Arguments 14 Interpreting inkblots is highly subjective, but the process serves to highlight how arguments also have a subjective dimension. Few arguments are settled by logic. Should we invade countries that might attack us? Should we torture prisoners who might know what we need to know? Should we drop a nuclear bomb on a country that did attack us? And by the way, what grade is fair for this paper or this student? Should we use grades at all? I’m not denying the force of logic. Logic can uncover a genuine error in someone’s argument. But logic cannot uncover an error in someone’s position. If we could have proven that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction, that wouldn’t have proven that it was wrong to invade Iraq. “We should invade Iraq” is a claim that is imp ...

I’ve not been in physical contact with any pandas in my entire life, and I’m sure they’re not good conversationalists because they lack anything to talk about besides bamboo, sitting, sleeping, and suffocating their own young. Step 2: Optional Personal Story (1-2 paragraphs) Sometimes you are closely tied to the subject matter and this would be a good point to talk about that or tell your story/anecdote. It covers two points, the first being that you can write out the personal story and figure out what exactly you want to say before even starting the rough draft of the argumentative paper. The second point is that it allows you to curb the emotional investment. Let’s pretend that our wonderfully mysterious writer and hater of pandas did have a personal story. He/she could present it something like this. It was a warm spring day and my family and I were attending the local zoo. My father and mother had thought to dress me in a panda costume to celebrate the birth of a baby panda. I was six at the time and thought it was a wonderful idea. So I skipped to the crowded exhibit ahead of my parents, fell over the rail and was face to face with a glassy eyed bear cat as it lazily chewed on bamboo. My parents tried to save me but they were murdered by the surprised panda when it tried to roll away from squealing six-year-old child in a horrible costume. I will never forgive that panda for killing my pare ...

I recommend printing out this exam and taking notes on it before launching into your responses. Increase the font size or double-space before printing, if you wish. I need to see only your responses, which can be sent by email to [email protected] no later than Monday, December 14th, at midnight. Part One: Close Reading (60 pts.) Note: Don’t be thrown by the length of these instructions. I’m just trying to give you some good strategies for close reading. You might use some of these for your major essay draft, in fact. I would prefer that you do your work on this exam independently. You should not have to use outside, secondary sources on this exam, although dictionaries such as the OED online (available as a database through our library) may help you to clarify certain word usages. My expectation is that you will generally be able to draw from the experience you have had thus far as a reader and writer in the course. Perhaps to gain some context for each passage, you may want to try to find its original placement on course Salon. PFL Library Link is a tool that was originally developed to help subject librarians in their selection process by displaying title availability in the catalog directly on provider web pages and databases. It soon became clear, however, that the real-time availability of library titles on web sites such as Amazon.com would help patrons seeking access to a particular book but unaware that this book may already be available in the library network. Thus, instead of keeping on trying to drive patrons to the OPAC, the OPAC is brought to the users where they actually are (e.g. on Amazon). The reunification of 10 faculty libraries inside the new Rolex Learning Center at EPFL was a perfect opportunity to rethink which collections should be put forward in an environment that is organized primarly around the working and living space of the users. "Collection development" has shifted from a simple selection of content added to collections to a selection of the best way of access to relevent content. Electronic books allow on-demand access in an even more cost and ressource-efficient way. We discuss how the EPFL Library is implementing its e-books collection to allow for on-demand rental or buying of titles.

Cette présentation expose un bref état des lieux du livre électronique dans les deux bibliothèques universitaires lausannoises. Tout d'abord, nous abordons le prêt de tablettes de lecture (e-readers) en relatant l'expérience de la Bibliothèque Cantonale Universitaire (BCU) qui a récemment mis à disposition de ses lecteurs des appareils Kindle DX et Apple iPad. Ceux-ci ont rencontré un grand succès auprès des utilisateurs, mais la gestion de leur contenu reste difficile à gérer dans le cadre d'une bibliothèque. Dans un deuxième temps, nous évoquons la collection de livres électroniques de la Bibliothèque de l'EPFL pour passer rapidement en revue les différentes étapes du "circuit du livre" électronique: sélection, acquisition, catalogage, relevé des statistiques et conservation à long terme.

La Bibliothèque de l'EPFL réfléchit à la problématique du signalement des livres électroniques depuis 2005, lorsqu'un catalogue ad-hoc est créé pour pallier aux difficultés d'insérer ces ouvrages dans le catalogue collectif NEBIS. Cette solution permet de cataloguer facilement les e-books, mais impose à l'utilisateur d'interroger plusieurs catalogues. Une solution avec un champ de recherche unique est donc préférable. Les outils de type "resource discovery tools" pourraient permettre la mise en place d'une telle recherche unifiée. Cette présentation revient sur l'expérience de la bibliothèque de l'EPFL dans sa recherche d'une telle solution.

It has become fashionable of late to insist that all librarians need to learn how to code. My opinion is however that all librarians do not need to become expert computer programmers, but rather that gaining some understanding of the concepts of software engineering has the potential of making them better prepared when they interact with vendors and developers. I make a parallel with learning basic carpentry skills to complete minor repairs in a house, and more importantly, gaining sufficient knowledge of this type of work so as to recognize when a task needs to be delegated to a professional, and be able to interact with contractors to ensure a satisfactory result. Two-days workshops that are led by the Software Carpentry organization and its volunteers are in my opinion a good way to introduce librarians to practical programming skills. Presented at code4lib North, St. Catharines, Ontario, June 4 & 5, 2015.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine.
