Robbins Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Cambridge, CB2 3EB, UK Abstract Impulsivity, broadly defined as action without foresight, is a component of numerous psychiatric illnesses including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mania and substance abuse. In order to investigate the mechanisms underpinning impulsive behavior, the nature of impulsivity itself needs to be defined in operational terms that can be used as the basis for empirical investigation. Due to the range of behaviors that the term impulsivity describes, it has been suggested that impulsivity is not a unitary construct, but encompasses a variety of related phenomena that may differ in their biological basis. Through fractionating impulsivity into these component parts, it has proved possible to devise different behavioral paradigms to measure various aspects of impulsivity in both humans and laboratory animals. This review describes and evaluates some of the current behavioral models of impulsivity developed for use with rodents based on human neuropsychological tests, focusing on the five-choice serial reaction time task, the stop-signal reaction time task and delay-discounting paradigms. Furthermore, the contributions made by preclinical studies using such methodology to improve our understanding of the neural and neurochemical basis of impulsivity and ADHD are discussed, with particular reference to the involvement of both the serotonergic and dopaminergic systems, and frontostriatal circuitry. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction Impulsivity is a characteristic of human behavior that can be both beneficial and detrimental to our everyday lives. For example, the ability to act on impulse may allow us to seize a valuable opportunity, or to make a disastrous decision that we then live to regret. Impulsivity can be viewed as a dimension of normal personality (Eysenck & Eysenck, 1977), but high levels of impulsivity are associated with psychiatric disorders such as ADHD, mania, substance abuse and personality disorders, indicating that this personality trait can be maladaptive (DSM IV, 1994). It has been suggested that impulsivity is not a unitary construct (Evenden, 1999; Moeller, Barratt, Dougherty, Schmitz, & Swann, 2001), and that increases in different aspects of impulsivity may represent different subtypes of ADHD (Nigg, 2003; Sonuga-Barke, 2002). ⁎ Corresponding author. A success story within neuroimaging has been the discovery of distinct neural correlates of episodic retrieval, providing insight into the processes that support memory for past life events. Here we focus on one commonly reported neural correlate, the left parietal old/new effect, a positive going modulation seen in event-related potential (ERP) data that is widely considered to index episodic recollection. Substantial evidence links changes in the size of the left parietal effect to changes in remembering, but the precise functional utility of the effect remains unclear. Here, using forced choice recognition of verbal stimuli, we present a novel population level test of the hypothesis that the magnitude of the left parietal effect correlates with memory performance. We recorded ERPs during old/new recognition, source accuracy and Remember/Know/Guess tasks in two large samples of healthy young adults, and successfully replicated existing within participant modulations of the magnitude of the left parietal effect with recollection. Critically, however, both datasets also show that across participants the magnitude of the left parietal effect does not correlate with behavioral measures of memory – including both subjective and objective estimates of recollection. We conclude that in these tasks, and across this healthy young adult population, the generators of the left parietal ERP effect do not index performance as expected. Taken together, these novel findings provide important constraints on the functional interpretation of the left parietal effect, suggesting that between group differences in the magnitude of old/new effects cannot always safely be used to infer differences in recollection.

Changing Circumstances, Disrupting Habits Wendy Wood Duke University Leona Tam Texas A&M University Melissa Guerrero Witt Duke University The present research investigated the mechanisms guiding habitual behavior, specifically, the stimulus cues that trigger habit performance. When usual contexts for performance change, habits cannot be cued by recurring stimuli, and performance should be disrupted. Thus, the exercising, newspaper reading, and TV watching habits of students transferring to a new university were found to survive the transfer only when aspects of the performance context did not change (e.g., participants continued to read the paper with others). In some cases, the disruption in habits also placed behavior under intentional control so that participants acted on their current intentions. Changes in circumstances also affected the favorability of intentions, but changes in intentions alone could not explain the disruption of habits. Furthermore, regardless of whether contexts changed, nonhabitual behavior was guided by intentions. People repeat actions as they fulfill everyday responsibilities at work and at home, interact with others, and entertain themselves. Many everyday activities not only are performed frequently but also are performed in stable circumstances—meaning in particular locations, at specific times, in particular moods, and with or without certain interaction part- ners. Attesting to the regularity of everyday action, Quinn and Wood’s (2004) diary investigation with a community sample revealed that a full 47% of participants’ daily activities were enacted almost daily and usually in the same location (see also Wood, Quinn, & Kashy, 2002). The consistency of everyday life estab- lishes habits, or behavioral dispositions to repeat well-practiced actions given recurring circumstances. Habits reflect the cognitive, neurological, and motivational changes that occur when behavior is repeated (Wood, Quinn, & Neal, 2005). With repetition, associations form in memory between the practiced action and typical performance times, locations, or other stable features of context. These associations guide habitual action so that it is triggered automatically by stable cues. As we explain, habit associations are represented in learning and memory systems separately from intentions, or decisions to achieve particular outcomes. Thus, walking into a dark room can trigger reaching for the light switch without any decision to do so. The separation of habitual and intentional guides to action is consistent with the historically popular view that instrumental behaviors initially are acquired as goal-directed acts but with continued performance become less dependent on explicit goals (e.g., Allport, 1937; James, 1890). An alternative to using twin pairs to separate genetic and environmental influence is through the use of experimental designs, which have the primary goal of explaining the causes of behavior. Oneparticularly ingenious example comes from the laboratory of Michael Meaney, a professor of psychiatryand neurology at McGill University, using female rats as experimental subjects (Francis, Dioro, Liu, &Meaney, 1999). Meaney’s research revealed that the parenting ability of female rats can be reliablyclassified based on how attentive they are to their rat pups, as well as how much time they spendgrooming the pups. The question tackled in this study was whether these behaviors were learned fromthe rats’ own mothers or transmitted genetically. To answer this question experimentally, Meaney andcolleagues had to think very carefully about the comparisons they wanted to make. It would have beeninsufficient to simply compare the offspring of good and bad mothers—this approach could notdistinguish between genetic and environmental pathways.
