Who we are as a community affects the relationships
in our school and home life

order to be diverse and open minded
It takes a Village to raise a
child

Sociocultural Influences effect how people interact
with one another

teacher
ELL students have to try assimilate to new
expectations that teacher may have for them
ELL students struggle to just learning cultural and
academic meaning of words
Sociocultural Influences

American culture in regards to teaching and
curriculum
Some students are taught more than one math subject
at a time or combination of different concepts
Immigration “negativity/ anxiety”
Students may be weary to speak or associate with
students due to negative connotations being an

5.
It is important to understand two stages of
bilingualism
Simultaneous – usually in early age (0-3)- language
used at home, is different from community
Sequential- (3- adult) native language is already
established and a second language must be learned.
Important that students and teachers communicate
language plan and how they would like students to
learn secondary language
Bilingualism
6.
Important to create a safe environment for students
This may be provided by supporting students that
native language AND English are appropriate to use
in class
Parents can get involve by still using native language
yet also use English as well
Students should participate in class with English
usage
Bilingualism
7. Some good notes parents can help are:
Talk to all of the children with your household
with the same tone and speech and language,
do not use two different languages when
talking to two different siblings
Avoid abrupt language changes when talking
with your children (0-6 years old).
Don’t force children into bilingualism
Stay consistent with the pattern that is used in your
household
Parent Notes
8.
There may be many barriers that we think may keep
parents from becoming involved
Work Schedules
Lack of Communication
Different Perceptions/Views
Must try and overcome those barriers ad Increase
parental involvement for students ( everyone has a
responsibility)
Parent Involvement
9.
Parents can get evolved and we as a school and
teachers can provide that for them by
Sending out bilingual newsletters
Initiate home visits by teachers
Incorporate community into curriculum
Facilitate and help parents to provide for childcare in
order to accommodate parents work schedules
Parent Involvement
10.
In order to cultivate a home school partnership I
think it is important we get parents involved early
It is important for parents to be involve in district an
school-based planning and management.
Parents should also work to try and educate
themselves with the help of the school to understand
school system
Parents in-turn should educate the teachers about
community events and show worth to the
community
Home School Partnership
11.
School system will communicate to home schools
through email and phone contacts
Also use of video conferencing can be used in order
to create a more personal approach,
Teachers or school staff could possible do home
check-ins

Notes de l'éditeur
-It is important that parents, teachers, business owners and all in the community understand that we as adults hold the responsibility to make a better future for the young men and women, and children we encounter daily
Our community culture affects our community through different social relationships that build trust and shared activities. Culture affects our teaching through relating lessons to the cultural experiences students may have, and the home life of the student cultural plays a major role into the language being spoke and values being taught to students.
Important to let students know though have their own culture its important to keep open mind about other cultures and be respecful
- As teachers we need to look at our students as individuals with specific background knowledge and culture and try and teach English language to students while also appreciating and cultivating their native language
As teachers and parents we have to help our students understand and navigate through these influences and reassure students that they should continue to work hard.
- Teachers should send syllabus with students in native language and english so parents can help with bilingualism
-Try not to speak multiple languages all at once if speaking English use that and try and be fair to all children language
-If you want child to speak one particular language with you encourage them to us it in their communication with you
- Important that students have consistency to learn and assimilate language
Also could try and Invite extended family members, and provide transportation in order for students to be in afterschool activites that parents can attend
Working together as full partners, parents, teachers, administrators, businesspeople, and other community members can create an educational program that meets unique local needs and reflects the diversity within a school without compromising high performance expectations and standards. They can foster a caring and sensitive school climate that respects and responds to students' differences as well as their similarities.
