                    The JCA Experience…
Jericho	Christian	Academy	provides	an	education	founded	on	high
academic	standards. The	instructional	program	facilitates	the	student’s
ability	to	think	critically	and	productively. Within	the	academic	program,
the	student’s	individual	strengths	and	weaknesses	are	identified	and
nurtured	in	an	effort	to	equip	the	student	with	the	necessary	principles	to
fulfill	God’s	will	in	his/her	life.
Jericho	Christian	Academy	provides	a	Christ-centered	environment	built
upon	a	qualified	teaching	staff	and	a	Christian	instructional	program.
The	Jericho	Christian	Academy	teacher	is	an	individual	who	possesses	a
working	knowledge	of	the	Bible	and	can	guide	students	in	the	practical
application	of	God’s	Word	to	daily	life. The	teacher	is	child-centered	and

bear	the	truth	of	God’s	Word. Selected	curricula,	teaching	methods,	and
resources	support	the	belief	that	all	truth	is	God’s	truth.
Jericho	Christian	Academy	stands	firmly	on	the	belief	that	the	Christian
school	is	an	extension	of	the	Christian	home. Jericho	Christian	Academy
strives	to	work	in	partnership	with	the	home	in	training	the	student. The
Bible	clearly	states	that	it	is	the	responsibility	of	the	parent	to	train
the	child	in	Christian	principles.	Jericho	Christian	Academy	has	been
established	to	serve	parents	in	fulfilling	this	responsibility.
• Teaches	and	nurtures	principles	necessary	to	fulfill	God’s	Word	in	our
   students’	lives.

he	might	develop	to	the	glory	of	God,	spiritually,	socially,	mentally	and

    how	to	apply	himself.

with	courage	and	understanding,	and	experience	a	living	faith	in	God	that	will
make	him/her	a	credit	to	Christ,	the	community,	the	nation	and	themselves.
12.To	teach	each	student	the	unadulterated	truth	based	upon	The	Word	of

                          NonDiscrimination
The	Jericho	Christian	Academy	does	not	discriminate	with	regard	to	the
admission,	enrollment	or	participation	of	students	in	its	educational	or
athletic	programs	on	the	basis	of	race,	color,	gender,	and	ethnicity	or
national	origin. Students	of	any	race,	color,	gender,	national or	ethnic

                             Testing Information
Various	tests	are	used	by	the	Jericho	Christian	Academy	to	help	evaluate
and	improve	the	efforts	and	programming	of	the	entire	school.
Parents	should	understand	that	admission	is	not	dependent	upon
achievement	level. Most	private	schools	require	a	high	academic	level
for	lockstep	chronological	grading. Testing is not designed to screen
students that are underachievers; its purpose is to diagnose for
       prescriptive curriculum.
Testing	is	required	before	admission	and,	if	they	possess	age	appropriate
self	control	and	discipline	most	children	can	be	admitted.
All students take achievement test	each	spring	so	that	students,	parents
and	teachers	may	see	progress	in	terms	of	national	norms. The	scores
also	aid	in	the	process	of	evaluation.	A	profile	and	home	report	will	be
sent	home	to	help	guide	parents	in	interpreting	the	various	scores.
Sophomores and juniors take Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests (PSAT)
in	the	fall. It	is	good	practice	for	the	SAT. The	purpose	of	this	test	is	to
provide	an	indication	of	national	placement	when	compared	with	college-
bound	sophomores	and	juniors	in	the	United	States.
Juniors take Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) in	the	spring	and	seniors
in	the	fall	and/or	spring. This	test	provides	an	indication	of	national
placement	for	college-bound	students.	Most	colleges	use	the	SAT	as	one
factor	in	determining	acceptance.	Students	who	desire	to	go to	college
and	score	well	on	the	SAT	may	likely	be	accepted	at	the	college	of	their
choice. The	SAT	may	be	taken	more	than	once,	and	most	students
improve	their	scores	when	they	take	the	test	again.	Therefore,	it	is
recommended	that	the	SAT	be	repeated	to	obtain	the	highest	score.

                        Academic Integrity
Jericho	Christian	Academy	recognizes	the	need	for	all	students	to	assume
responsibility	for	their	own	schoolwork. Academic	integrity	must	be
preserved,	not	only	for	its	own	sake,	but	in	fairness	to	the	objective
evaluation	of	all. Cheating	in	any	form	will	not	be	permitted. In	such	a
case,	a	conference	will	be	held	to	include	the	student,	parent,	teacher,
and	Vice-Principal	or	Principal. As	a	result	of	this	conference,	one	or
more	of	the	following	actions	may	be	imposed:
1. In	cases	involving	academic	dishonesty,	a	determination	of	the
grade	and	of	the	student’s	status	in	the	course	are	left	solely	to
the	discretion	of	the	teacher,	Vice-Principal	or	Principal.	In	such
cases,	where	the	instructor	judges	a	student	guilty	of	academic
dishonesty,	the	instructor	will	report	the	incident	of	dishonesty	to
the	Vice	Principal	in	order	to	discern	potential	patterns	of	egregious
     dishonesty.
2. At	the	sole	discretion	of	the	Principal,	Vice	Principal	and	teacher,	the
student’s	work	will	be	rejected	and	a	grade	value	of	zero	imposed	for
     the	assignment	in	question.
3. The	student	may	be	assigned	detention.
4. If	more	than	one	person	is	involved	in	the	cheating,	the	same	penalty
will	be	assigned	to	all	parties	concerned. Please	note	that	students
who	allow	their	papers	to	be	copied	are	considered	to	be	cheating.
5. In	case	of	cheating,	which	involves	classroom	disruption,	the
administration	will	impose	a	penalty	of	suspension.
6. The	theft	of	teacher	materials	of	any	type	will	result	in	disciplinary	action.
7. If	a	student	forges	the	signature(s)	of	staff	members	or	parent(s),
or	modifies	a	school	document,	the	student	will	confer	with	an
administrator.	The	penalty	will	include	detention	and	/or	suspension
     from	1	to	10	days.
It	should	be	noted	that	in	an	examination	setting,	any	behavior	not
directly	related	to	taking	of	the	examination	could	be	construed	as
cheating. Students	are	cautioned	not	to	risk	the	accusation	of	cheating
and	its	consequences	by	talking,	turning	around,	or	placing	their	own
exam	to	be	observed	by	others,	etc.

                   Access to Technology/Internet
Jericho	Christian	Academy	has	made	an	attempt	to	allow	access	to	the
Internet	to	all	students	through	technology	for	educational	purposes.
The	Academy	goal	is	for	students	to	learn	and	apply	technology	as	a
tool	to	access,	process,	and	distribute	information. Before	students
are	allowed	access	to	the	Academy’s	technology,	each	must	sign,	along
with	their	parent(s),	the	Responsible	Computer	System	and	Internet
Use	Agreements. It	should	be	understood	that	in	signing	the	Internet
Use	Agreement,	the	student	agrees	to	follow	all	rules	and	regulations
regarding	the	use	of	technology,	as	set	forth	in	the	Jericho	Christian
Academy	Computer	System	and	Internet	Usage	Plan,	or	suffer	disciplinary
consequences. The	Jericho	Christian	Academy	Computer	System	and

the	beginning	of	each	school	year.

                         Financial Policy
Students	accepted	for	admission	are	expected	to	remain	in	school	for
the	entire	year. Parents	or	guardians	are	held	responsible	for	paying
the	entire	year’s	tuition. There	are	no	refunds	on	tuition	for	early
withdrawal. There	can	also	be	no	tuition	refunds	due	to	illness,	vacation,
holidays,	relocations,	or	unforeseen	inclement	weather,	which	causes
state	emergencies,	and	bus	transportation	or	other	services	to	be
suspended.
A	charge	of	$25	will	be	made	for	any	returned	checks. It	is	expected	that
returned	checks	will	be	reimbursed	IMMEDIATELY	with	a	cashier’s	check,
money	order	or	certified	funds. If	one	(1)	bad	check	(on	an	account)	is
received,	a	cashier’s	check,	money	order	or	certified	funds	must	be	used
to	make	all	further	payments	on	that	account.
If	the	tuition	payment	has	not	been	received	ten	(10)	days	after	the
due	date,	a	$25	dollar	late	charge	will	be	added	to	the	amount	due	and
become	a	part	of	the	student’s	tuition	payment. After	the	payment	is
ten	(10)	days	past	due,	all	tuition	payments	must	be	in	the	form	of	cash,
cashier’s	check,	money	order	or	certified	funds. If	the	tuition	payment
is	late	three	(3)	or	more	times	during	the	academic	year,	the	parent,

payroll	deduction	plan	or	to	pay	the	full	balance	of	the	tuition	no	later
than	the	next	scheduled	tuition	payment	due	date.
Removing Students From Class Because of the Nonpayment of Tuition
If	a	student’s	tuition	payment	becomes	fifteen	(15)	days	past	due,	date,
the	student	will	not	be	allowed	to	attend	class. Parents	and	Guardians
are	requested	to	refrain	from	sending	students	to	school	until	the	past

If	a	student	is	sent	to	school	after	the	student’s	tuition	becomes	fifteen
(15)	days	past	due,	the	student	may	be	removed	from	the	classroom	and
instructed	not	to	return	until	the	tuition	is	paid	in	full.	The	student	will

       Effect of Withdrawal on Tuition
All	students	are	enrolled	for	an	enrollment	period	of	one	school	year.
Implementation	of these	withdrawal	procedures	will	not	alter	the
requirement	that	one	year’s	tuition	be	paid	for	each	enrollment	period.
During	each	enrollment	period,	it	is	understood	that	the	administrators
of	the	Jericho	Christian	Academy	reserve	the	right,	at	all	times	and	for
any	cause	that	they	may	consider	sufficient,	to	suspend,	dismiss,	or
recommend	withdrawal	of	a	student	before	the	enrollment	period	is
       completed.
The entire amount of one year’s tuition will be required if:
       - the	administration	requests	parents	to	withdraw	the	student	prior	to
          the	completion	of	the	enrollment	period;
       - the	student	is	withdrawn	by	the	parents	due	to	illness,	vacation,
          holidays,	relocation	etc.;
       - the	student	is	withdrawn	by	the	parents	for	any	reason	prior	to	the
completion	of	the	enrollment	period;	or
       - the	student	is	suspended	or	expelled	prior	to	the	completion	of	the
          enrollment	period.

       Fees Not Included In Tuition
Registration	and	book	fees	are	not	included	in	tuition	and	are	neither
       refundable	nor	redeemable.
Lunch	fees,	late	pick-up	fees,	field	trip	fees,	and	other	fees,	that	might
arise	during	each	academic	year,	are	not	included	in	the	tuition	and	must
be	paid	when	they	become	due.
       Library Fines & Lost Books
Fees	for	library	books	that	are	returned	late	or	lost	must	be	paid
promptly. Unpaid	amounts	will	be	added	as	an	outstanding	balance	to	the
       student’s	account.
Parent and Student Handbook 17

In	the	event	a	textbook	or	library	book	is	lost,	it	is	the	total	responsibility
of	the	student	or	his/her	parent/guardian	to	locate	and	return	the	book
or	pay	for	it.	The	replacement	cost	of	text	books	or	materials	that	are
owned	by	the	Academy	or	loaned	to	the	Academy	must	be	repaid	to	the
Academy	within	two	weeks	after	notice	is	given	to	the	parent,	guardian
or	responsible	party	if	the	student	has	lost,	failed	to	return,	written	in
or	otherwise	damaged	or	defaced	the	textbooks	or	materials.	Failure	to
pay	for	lost,	stolen,	or	damaged	books	or	materials	will	result	in	loss	of
library	privileges,	school	refusal	to	issue	textbooks,	grades	being	held	or
suspension	from	graduation	exercises.	Any	outstanding	amounts	not	paid
will	also	be	added	as	an	outstanding	balance	to	the	student’s	account.
Late Pick-Up, Field Trip, And Other Fees
There	will	be	a	$1.00	charge	for	every	minute	after	3:40	p.m.	that	a	student
remains	at	school.	Late	pick-up	fees	are	to	be	paid	to	the	teacher	or	care
provider	at	the	time	the	fees	are	incurred. Any	outstanding	amounts	not
paid	will	be	added	as	an	outstanding	balance	to	the	student’s	account.
Field	Trip	fees	should	be	paid	in	cash	to	the	student’s	classroom	teacher.
Failure	to	pay	for	a	field	trip	may	result	in	the	student	not	being	allowed
to	attend	the	field	trip.
Other	fees	should	be	paid	promptly. If	such	payments	are	made	by
check,	the	student’s	name	and	grade,	parent’s	telephone	numbers,	and
homeroom	teacher’s	name	should	be	included	on	the	front	of	the	check.
Replacement of Damaged Equipment
The	cost	associated	with	the	replacement	of	any	lost	or	damaged	item	or
equipment,	for	which	the	student	is	found	to	have	been	responsible,	is	to
be	paid	to	the	school	promptly. This	includes	the	labor	cost	associated
with	the	repair	of	damaged	item.	Any	outstanding	amounts	not	paid	will
be	added	as	an	outstanding	balance	to	the	student’s	account.

Policy Regarding Access to Students and
                Student Records
Consistent	with	the	intent	of	the	Academy	to	promote	the	best	interests	of
each	student	enrolled	in	its	schools	and	in	partnership	with	both	parents
of	each	student,	it	shall	be	the	policy	of	the	academy	to	maintain	strict
neutrality	between	parents	unless	otherwise	directed	by	court	order.
In	order	to	protect	a	family’s	right	of	privacy	within	the	school,	only
the	parent(s)	having	legal	custody,	or	a	parent	or	legally	appointed
guardian(s),	or	school	administration	officials	and	designated	school
personnel	in	the	fulfillment	of	their	respective	functions,	may	have	direct
access	to	individual	students	and/or	their	student	records. All	other
access	to	students	must	be	by	parental	or	guardian	authorization.

I. RESIDENTIAL	CUSTODIAL,	NONRESIDENTIAL	JOINT	CUSTODIAL	AND
     NONCUSTODIAL	PARENTS	VISITATIONS
A. It	is	not	mandatory	to	provide	a	copy	of	your	legal	custody	order,
separation	agreement	or	divorce	documentation. However, both
parents	have	a	legal	right	to	access	information	concerning	their	son/
daughter	unless	there	is	a	legal	document	on	file	indicating	otherwise.
The	following	definitions	apply	to	this	policy:
    Residential Custodial Parent
The	parent	who	has	joint	or	sole	custody	with	which	the	student
    regularly	resides.
    Nonresidential Joint Custodial Parent
The	parent	who	has	joint	custody	but	with	whom	the	student	does	not
    regularly	reside.
    Noncustodial Parent
The	parent	who	does	not	have	custody	of	the	student.
B. Unless	otherwise	expressly	curtailed	or	restricted	by	a	provision	of	a
court	order,	of	which	a	copy	has	been	provided	to	the	administrator,
the	residential	custodial	parent	or	nonresidential	custodial	parent,

Policy Regarding Access to Students and Student Records (continued)
or	non-custodial	parent	of	any	child	enrolled	in	the	school	shall	have
access	to	student	records	which	are	provided	to	the	custodial	parent
or	joint	custodial	parent,	upon	request. The	residential	custodial
parent	or	nonresidential	custodial	parent,	or	non-custodial	parent	is
entitled	to	participate	in	all	school	activities,	including	conferences,
in	which	the	residential	custodial	parent	is	permitted	to	participate.
       C.	Upon	proper	presentation	of	legal	documents,	no	visitation	will	be
allowed	during	school	hours	by	a	non-residential	custodial	parent,	or
non-custodial	parent	unless	specific	permission	is	obtained	from	the
residential	custodial	parent	and	the	school	administrator	is	notified
twenty-four	hours	in	advance,	or	such	visitation	is	expressly	permitted
as	stated	in	a	certified	copy	of	the	most	recent	court	order	on	file
           with	the	school.
       D. In	the	event	neither	parent	notifies	the	Academy	of	the	existence	of
a	court	order	action,	neither	parent	shall	be	deemed	to	have	rights
superior	to	the	other	parent	with	respect	to	the	children.
       E. In	the	event	the	Academy	is	advised	of	the	existence	of	an	action	affecting
the	family	of	a	child	enrolled	in	the	Academy,	but	neither	parent	provides
the	Academy	with	a	certified	copy	of	the	most	recent	court	order	in	such
action,	the	parent	enrolling	a	child	shall	be	deemed	to	be	the	residential
custodial	parent	with	no	restrictions	on	the	nonresidential	joint	custodial
or	non-custodial	parent’s	right	to	be	kept	informed	of	the	child’s	school
progress	and	activities,	and	participate	therein.
II. OTHER	INDIVIDUALS	REQUESTING	ACCESS	TO	STUDENTS
In	the	event	that	individuals	other	than	those	referred	to	above	(including
those	representing	federal,	state	or	county	agencies),	request	access	to	a
       student	or	the	student’s	records:
       1. All	requests	for	access	to	students	must	be	directed	to	the
           Headmaster	or	Principal;
       2.	 Official	identification	must	be	presented	by	those	requesting	access;
       3. School	officials	will	provide	the	written	policy	statement	regarding
           access	to	students;
Parent and Student Handbook 21

4. The	desire	to	cooperate	with	appropriate	agencies	should	be
    expressed;
5. Permission	that	a	school	official	is	present	during	the	access	and	visit
    is	to	be	requested	but	is	not	required	to	be	granted;
6. Willingness	to	grant	access	will	be	granted	upon	the	condition	that	verbal
    or	written	authorization	by	the	parent	is	provided	to	a	school	official;
7. Access	without	verbal	or	written	authorization	by	the	parent	will	be
provided	upon	the	presentation	of	a	legally	issued	subpoena	or	court
    order;	and.
8. Access	without	verbal	or	written	authorization	by	the	parent	will
be	provided	as	directed	by	a	properly	identified	and	present	law
enforcement	official	serving	the	community	in	which	the	access	is
    requested.
Access	without	the	proper	authorization,	as	noted	in	the	above
guidelines,	is	to	be	courteously	refused.

III. UNAUTHORIZED	ACCESS	TO	STUDENTS
In	the	event	that	access	is	sought	by	force	or	in	any	way	other	than
prescribed	above,	the	school	official	will	attempt	to:
1.	 Avoid	any	physical	restraint,	unless	an	individual	is	in	physical	danger;
2.	 Contact	appropriate	law	enforcement	officials	via	911;
3. Contact	the	parent	or	legal	guardian	immediately	or	as	soon	as	is
    practicable.

IV. ACCESS	TO	STUDENT	RECORDS
In	order	to	provide	students	with	appropriate	instruction	and	educational
services,	it	is	necessary	for	Jericho	Christian	Academy	to	maintain
extensive	and	sometimes	personal	information	about	them	and	their
families. It	is	essential	that	pertinent	information	in	these	records	be
readily	available	to	appropriate	school	personnel,	be	accessible	to	the
student’s	parents	or	legal	guardian	or	the	student	in	accordance	with	law.

School Opening, Class Visitation and Office Hours
Onset and Ending of Classes
Classes	generally	begin	in	September	on	the	Tuesday	after	Labor	Day. The
academic	year	generally	ends	in mid	June.
Time of Operation
• School	Hours:	School	hours	are	from	8:15	a.m.	to	3:30	p.m. Students
are	expected	to	arrive	at	8:15	a.m.
• Before	&	After	Care: Before	Care	begins	at	6:30	a.m.	and	After	Care
   concludes	at	6:00	p.m.
• Registrar’s	Office: The	registrar	is	on	duty	between	9:00	a.m.	and	5:00	p.m.
Use of School Phone and Office
The	school	phone	is	for	business	purposes	and	should	not	be	used	by
students	except	for	emergencies. Only	students	with	official	business	will
be	allowed	in	the	office.
School Visitations and Conferences
Jericho	Christian	Academy	has	a	policy	regarding	access	to	students. See
the	policy	section	of	this	handbook.
Building Visitors
All	visitors	to	the	school	are	required	to	report	to	the	office	to	get
permission	to	visit	in	the	building.	They	must	sign	in	and	receive	a	pass	to
visit.	This	is	important	for	the	overall	safety	and	security	of	the	children.
Classroom Visitation
Parents	are	welcome	and	invited	to	observe	instruction	in	their	child’s
classroom	except	during	testing. Appointments	with	the	classroom	teacher	are
strongly	encouraged,	as	classroom	visits	work	best	when	parents	communicate
with	the	teacher	and	make	the	necessary	prior	arrangements. All	visitors,
including	parents	and	parent	volunteers	in	classrooms,	must	report	to	the
school	office	to	obtain	a	visitor’s	badge	and	permission	to	visit	the	classroom.
This	is	necessary	to	ensure	the	highest	level	of	security	for	our	students	and
staff. Lunches,	books,	homework,	etc.	may	be	left	in	the	school	office	to
be	delivered. Unless	parents	have	signed	in	with	the	office	to	work	with	a
particular	teacher	or	on	a	specific	PTO	project,	they	should	not	be	in	the
classroom	or	hallways	during	the	school	day	(8:30	a.m.	3:30	p.m.)

       Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher	conferences	will	be	scheduled	at	mutually	convenient
times	throughout	the	school	year	for	the	purpose	of	communicating
each	student’s	academic	progress	to	his	or	her	family. Please	return	the
form	inviting	you	to	a	conference	or	check	with	your	child’s	teacher	to
       schedule	this	important	meeting.

hours	are	from	8:15	a.m.	until	3:30	p.m. Before	Care	includes	serving
breakfast	and	After	Care	includes	serving	snacks	to	the	students. The
students	are	also	given	an	opportunity	to	experience	praise	and	worship,
complete	homework	assignments,	and	engage	in	informal	play	with	their
peers.

                                      Absence
aIn	order	for	a	student	to	gain	the	most	in	school,	he/she	must	be	regular
in	attendance. Any	absence	or	late	arrival	not	absolutely	necessary	will
be	unexcused	and	the	student	will	receive	a	zero. The	only	absences	that
will	be	excused	are	Type	1,	as	defined	below.
Students	are	expected	to	be	on	time	in	school	every	day.	A	parent	decides
when	an	absence	is	necessary. However,	Jericho	Christian	Academy
determines	the	type	of	absence	that	obligates	the	teacher	to	assist	in
make-up	work. All	absences	require	a	note,	signed	by	a	parent/	guardian,
which	state	the	reason	for	the	absence	regardless	of	the	age	of	the
student. The	following	types	of	absences	are	identified:

                                Types of Absences:
       Type 1 :
Excused	Absences	are	those	for	illness,	a	death	in	one’s	immediate	family,
direct	involvement	in	an	accident,	a	necessary	doctor’s	appointment
(or	similar	verifiable	appointments)	or a	court	hearing	that	cannot	be
scheduled	outside of	school	hours.	A	note	must	be	presented	to	the	Office
in	advance	or	upon	return	to	school.	For	this	type	of	absence,	teachers
will	provide	the	required	information	to	assist	the	student	with	make-up
       work	or	tests.
       Type 2
Unexcused	Absences	are	those	for	any	reason	other	than	those	specified	as
Type	1.	Also,	if	the	student	fails	to	have	a	note	upon	returning	to	school,
the	absence	is	labeled	“Type	2”	regardless	of	the	reason	for	the	absence.
For	Type	2	absences,	teachers	are	not	required	to	provide	student	with
make-up	work	or	tests,	and	accepting	late	assignments	is	discretionary. Any
voluntary	absence	not	previously	approved	by	the	Headmaster	or	Principal
is	unexcused. A	grade	of	0	will	be	given	on	work	missed	during	unexcused
absences	and	tardiness/late	arrivals. Parents	are	strongly	encouraged	to
schedule	medical	and	other	appointments	after	school.
Parent and Student Handbook 27

Absence Due to Truancy:
Truancy	is	an	absence	without	parent/guardian	consent	and	is	considered	a
serious	violation	of	school	policy,	regardless	of	the	number	of	class	periods
missed. Under	such	circumstances,	a	teacher	has	no	obligation	to	provide
make-up	work,	accept	assignments,	or	allow	students	to	take	missed	tests.
Any	missed	work	may	be	given	a	zero	grade.	If	truancy	occurs,	a	conference
with	parent(s)	is	required	and	the	student	will	be	placed	on	disciplinary
probation	for	a	period	determined	by	the	Principal	or	Vice	Principal.	A
second	truancy	may	result	in	withdrawal	from	the	Academy.
Early Dismissals:
To	leave	school	during	the	day,	a	student	is	to	present	a	note	to	the
office	at	the	beginning	of	the	day.	The	note	should	have	the	student’s
name,	grade	and,	reason	and	time	for	the	dismissal.	The	expected	time
of	return	is	also	recommended,	if	it	can	be	predetermined. In	addition,
a	driver’s	license	or	other	identification	must	be	presented	before	the
student	may	be	released. If	a	student	fails	to	present	a	note	before	an
early	dismissal,	he/she	is	still	required	to	sign	out	in	the	office. Parental
permission,	either	verbal	or	written,	must	be	obtained	before	a	student
is	given	permission	to	leave	school. Students	who	leaves	school	without
checking	out	through	the	office, will	be	given	detention	for	the	time
missed. If	the	parents	have	not	authorized	the	absence,	it	will	be	treated
as	truancy,	since	an	authorized	adult	must	sign	the student	out	of	the
building.	Failure	to	do	so	will	be	treated	as	truancy.
It	is	the	student’s	responsibility	to	keep	up	with	school	work	missed
due	to	absences.	The	student	has	the	exact	number	of	days	absent	to
complete	missed	work. For	example:	If	a	student	misses	four	days,	he/
she	will	have	four	days	after	returning	to	make	up	all	work	(homework,
quizzes	and	tests). If	work	is	not	made	up,	there	will	be	a	penalty	of	a
zero	for	all	work	on	the	day	missed. All	work	must	be	made	up	before	the
end	of	interim	or	report	card	deadlines.
28 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability

 Absence (continued)
       Make-Up Work:
If an	absence	is	more	than	three	days,	a	parent	may	contact	the	Principal
or	Vice	Principal	to	arrange	for	getting	assignments	from	the	teachers.
When	requesting	assignments,	it	is	necessary	to	allow	at	least	one	full	day
for	assignments	to	be	gathered	before	they	can	be	picked	up.
       Vacations:
Vacations	during	school	time	are	discouraged.	Parental	cooperation	is
requested	to	avoid scheduling	early	or	extended	vacations	at	the	holiday
seasons	and/or	breaks.	THIS	IS	A	TYPE	2	ABSENCE	AND	TEACHERS	HAVE
NO	OBLIGATION	TO	ALLOW	MISSED	ASSIGNMENTS	OR	TESTS	TO	BE	MADE
UP.	Normally,	requests	for	family	travel	are	Type	2	unexcused	absences.
However,	in	cases	of	unusual	family	circumstances,	a	student’s	absence
may	be	approved	after	a	parent	contact	with	the	Headmaster	or	Principal.
       College Visits:
College	visits	are	to	be	made	before	May	1,	during	holiday	periods,
       whenever	possible.
       Accumulated Absences:
Absences	have	a	negative	impact	on	a	student’s	grades. Thirteen
       (13)	absences	in	one	semester	are	considered	to	be	excessive.	The
consequences	for	thirteen	absences,	whether	Type	1	or	Type	2,	may	range
from	the	a	lowering	of	a	grade	to	retention	or	loss	of	credit,	depending	on
individual	class	requirements.	When	a	student	reaches	nine	(9)	absences,
the	parents	will	be	notified	that	the	student	is	nearing	what	the	school
considers	to	be	excessive	absences	for	one	semester.	However,	ultimately
it	is	the	responsibility	of	parents	and	students	to	see	that	grades	are	not
       jeopardized	because	of	accumulated	absences.
       Reporting an Absence:
Call:	If	a	student	is	absent,	the	parent/guardian	is	to	call	the	office	each
day	of	an	absence	before	10	a.m.	When	calling,	please	identify	yourself
and	give	the	student’s	name,	grade	and	reason	for	the	absence.
Parent and Student Handbook 29

Written Excuse:	The	student	is	to	present	a	note	to	the	Office	the	first
day	upon	returning	to	school	and	before	attending	any	class.	The	note
should	indicate	the	student’s	full	name,	grade,	date	and	reason	for	the
absence.	The	note	must	be	signed	by	a	parent/guardian	regardless	of	the
age	of	the	student.	A	note	does	not	necessarily	excuse	a	student,	as	in	the
case	of	truancy,	but	indicates	that	the	parent/guardian	is	aware	of	the
absence.	Failure	to	bring	a	note	upon	return	makes	the	absence	Type	2	or
unexcused	regardless	of	the	reason	given.
Late Arrivals:	Students	are	to	bring	a	note	from	home	explaining	the
reason	for	the	late	arrival.	The	note	should	indicate	the	student’s	full
name,	grade,	date	and	reason	for	the	arriving	late. Failure	to	bring	a
note	will	result	in	an	unexcused	tardy	and	the	student	will	receive	a	zero
for	all	missed	work.

       A. Short Term (up to 10 days)	-	The	above	medication	procedures	are	to
           be	utilized.
       B. Long Term (throughout the school year)	-	The	above	medication
procedures	are	to	be	utilized. Parents	must	also	confirm	that	the
medication	has	not	exceeded	the	expiration	date. Medication
that	has	exceeded	the	expiration	date	will	not	be	administered.
Medication	that	is	not	picked	up	at	the	end	of	the	year	will	be
           discarded.
       C. Labeled Medication Required	-	The	school	will	not	receive	any
prescription	medication	unless	a	registered	pharmacist	labels	the	container
to	include	the	student’s	name,	date	and	directions	for	administering.

       CHILD ABUSE REPORTING
As	required	by	law,	employees	of	Jericho	Christian	Academy	must	report
child	abuse	to	the	appropriate	authorities. The	law	provides	that
suspected	child	abuse	or	neglect	shall	be	reported	in	accordance	with	the
provisions	of	Family	Law	Article	of	the	Annotated	Code	of	Maryland. This
reporting	requirement	prevails	over	other	laws	requiring	confidentiality.
Parent and Student Handbook 35

As	a	result,	any	teacher	or	other	staff	member	who	has	reason	to	believe
that	a	child	in	the	school	is	the	victim	of	any	form	of	child	abuse	or	if
there	is	a	reasonable	suspicion	of	physical	abuse,	sexual	abuse,	or	child
neglect,	the	teacher	or	staff	member	is	required	by	law	to	report	that
suspicion	to	the	local	law	enforcement	agency	or	the	Department	of
Social	Services. In	this	very	serious	and	legally	narrow	area,	the	school
will	not	contact	parents	in	advance	of	making	a	report	to	authorities.
The	law	also	makes	staff	members	immune	from	civil	liability	or	criminal
penalty	based	on	a	report	of	suspected	child	abuse.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURE
Crises	and	emergencies	happen	suddenly	and	frequently	without	much
warning. The	best	preparation	for	them	is	to	be	ready	to	make	the
decisions	necessary	to	ensure	that	students	and	staff	are	safe	and
properly	protected. The	following	paragraphs	present	the	actions	and
decisions	that	will	be	a	part	of	the	response	to	any	emergency.
STORM DRILLS AND ALERTS
1. Storm	Drills	will	be	held	twice	a	year.
2. All	students	will	go	to	their	assigned	rooms	when	there	is	a	drill	or	an
     actual	alert.
3. Everyone	will	be	notified	of	a	drill	or	actual	alert	by	the	P.A.	system.
4. Students	will	proceed	to	their	assigned	areas.
5. All	teachers	will	supervise	the	assigned	rooms.
6. All	students	and	teachers	will	remain	in	these	areas	until	the	drill	or
     the	alert	is	over.
EVACUATION OF THE BUILDING(S)
If	the	students	are	required	to	evacuate	the	school	buildings,	the	students
and	staff	will	relocate	as	follows:
    Elementary School to Main Sanctuary
    Middle/High School to Main Sanctuary
Thereafter,	the	Academy	will	implement	our	evacuation	plan	depending
on	the	circumstances	causing	the	evacuation. The	evacuation	notice	may
be	via	the	school	wide	intercom	or	by	word	of	mouth	depending	on	the
cause. The	administration	reserves	the	right	to	change	the	evacuation
locations	without	prior	notice.

 Health and Safety (continued)
       BOMB THREAT PROCEDURE
The	Academy	cannot	assume	that	bomb	threats	are	anything	more	than
threats.	For	this	reason,	if	a	bomb	threat	is	received,	upon	the	discretion	of
the	administration,	a	fire	drill	or	other	evacuation	procedure	will	be	used.
       FIRE DRILLS
       1. Fire	drills	will	be	held	monthly.
       2. Do	not	tamper	with	or	set	off	the	fire	alarm	box.
       3. Everyone	must	follow	fire	drill	rules	and	regulations.
       4. Vacate	the	building	quickly,	but	in	an	orderly	fashion.
       5. Everyone	is	to	evacuate	the	building	when	the	fire	alarm	sounds	or
when	the	fire	drill	is	conducted,	unless	previously	informed	not	to	do
           so.
       6. Lights	should	be	turned	off,	and	doors	closed	upon	leaving.
       7. No	pushing	or	shoving	is	allowed. Students	are	to	stay	on	the	right
side	of	the	hall	in	passing,	and	remain	in	line	with	the	class. Roll	will
be	taken	when	the	students	arrive	at	their	designated	safety	area.

                       Grades and Reports
The	report	card	describes	the	student’s	progress	in	school	and	is	prepared
at	the	end	of	each	nine-week	period. The	quality	of	the	student’s	work	is
indicated	by	letter	grades:
          A=100-93							B=92-83							C=82-73							D=72-63							E=62-0
All	grades	at	the	Academy	will	be	averaged	per	quarter	in	the	following	manner:

It	is	our	desire	that	each	student	performs	at	a	high	academic	level. The
academy	is	dedicated	to	the	nurturing	and	development	of	each	student.
However,	in	the	event	a	student	is	unable	to	maintain	a	minimum	average
of	“C”	(2.3)	in	any	course	or	an	overall	GPA	of	2.3,	the	student	will	be
placed	on	Academic	Probation	and	required	to	participate	in	an	after
school,	independent,	academic	tutorial	service. Private	sector	tutorial
services	are	strongly	encouraged.
Progress	reports	will	be	given	to	each	student	at	JCA	midway	through	the
nine-week	period. A	notice	of	concern	will	also	be	given	if	a	drop	of	more
than	one	level	occurs	in	any	subject.

       ACADEMIC RESTRICTION
Any	student	earning	a	D	or	E	in	a	subject	may	not	be	permitted	to
participate	in	extra	curricular	activities	except	as	the	school	directs.
These	restrictions	will	be	in	effect	for	four	(4)	weeks	after	report	cards	or
progress	reports	are	issued. The	student	will	not	be	reinstated	until	the
       academic	requirements	are	met.
       ACADEMIC PROBATION
Any	student	who	receives	more	than	one	E	in	his	subjects	or	whose
combined	average	falls	below	a	C	(2.3)	will	be	ineligible	to	participate	in
any	extracurricular	activities	and/or	interscholastic	athletics. The	student

JCA	curriculum. Only	credits	approved	by	JCA	will	be	applied	toward	JCA
       graduation	requirements.
       SUMMER SCHOOL
Whenever	a	subject	(course)	is	not	completed	or	failed	during	the	regular
school	term,	a	student	must	make	up	the	subject	in	summer	school..
Only	two	subjects	may	be	taken	in	summer	school,	which	is	held	for
a	six-week	term. Dates	for	summer	school	vary	each	year	but	usually
begin	the	Monday	following	July	4th. Elementary	school	students	will	be
recommended	for	summer	school,	if	the	basic	material	in	reading	and	math
have	not	been	mastered.. Students	may	attend	any	state-approved	private
or	public	school	to	make	up	failed	subject(s).
Special	help	and	parental	encouragement	will	make	summer	school	a	more

RETENTION POLICY
It	is	our	goal	at	Jericho	Christian	Academy	to	teach	each	child	according	to	his/
her individual	ability. Placement	will	be	made	according	to	the	results	of	the
standardized	testing	and	evaluation,	and	each	child	should	be	expected	to	do
well. However,	should	any	student	not	progress	according	to	expectations,	he
may	be	retained. Parents	will	be	notified,	in	advance,	of	this	decision. The
teacher,	in	conjunction	with	the	parents,	will	make	recommendations	for
summer	school	and	other	remedial	action	for	all	students.
The	Promotion	and	Retention	Policy	is	stated	below. However,	the
Headmaster	and	Principal	reserve	the	right	to	deviate	from	the	policy	and
use	their	individual	discretion	when	making	decisions	regarding	a	student’s
promotion	or	retention.
Students	are	generally	promoted	to	the	next	grade	level	at	the	end	of	each
school	year	based	on	satisfying	the	following	requirements:
1. A	satisfactory	level	of	mastery	of	the	material	presented	during	the
school	year,	as	evidenced	by	classroom	performance	and	grades
     received	on	report	cards.
2.	The	Academy	may	grant	exemptions	for	absences	not	exceeding	15
days,	if	documentation	for	an	extended	illness	under	a	physician’s	care
is	submitted. Of	course,	the	student	must	meet	an	academic	grade
level	requirement	by	completing	all	assignments	at	home	during	the
     absence.
Sudents	can	be	considered	for	retention	in	their	current	grade	based	upon
the	following	criteria:
1.	The	student	is	considerably	below	grade	level	in	two	or	more	academic
    subject	areas.
2. The	student	has	marginal	or	failing	grades	in	three	or	more	academic
subject	areas	(reading,	writing,	spelling,	math,	science,	history,	or	health).
3. The	student	has	an	excessive	number	of	absences,	either	excused
or	unexcused,	that	have	adversely	impacted	his	or	her	academic
    progress.
4. The	parent	and/or	teacher	have	reason	to	believe	the	student	is	not
academically	and/or	socially	prepared	for	the	subsequent	grade	level.

                  Christian Biblical Lifestyle Policy
All	students	and	parents/guardians,	with	students	attending	the	Jericho
Christian	Academy,	must	agree	to	uphold	a	Christian	lifestyle	at	all	times
during	their	enrollment	at	the	Academy.	By	attending	this	school,	they
acknowledge	that	a	Godly	environment	provides	the	best	opportunity	for
       them	to	achieve	excellence.
Accordingly,	students	agree	to	participate	in	morning	prayer	to	God,	through
the	name	Lord	Jesus,	asking	for	direction,	wisdom	and	guidance	for	the	day
and	in	weekly	chapel	services. Students	also	agree	that	they	will	exhibit	a
Christian	lifestyle,	both	in	and	outside	of	school,	which	is	consistent	with
the	King	James	version	of	the	Holy	Bible,	the	doctrine	of	the	City	of	Praise,
the	Jericho	Christian	Academy	Mission	Statement	and	Declaration	of	Faith,
and	any	other	related	policies	which	are	developed	by	the	City	of	Praise
Ministries. Students	attending	Jericho	Christian	Academy	agree	to:
       1. Accept	and	uphold	the	Academy’s	Mission	Statement	and	Declaration
            of	Faith.
       2. Manifest,	by	daily	example,	the	highest	Christian	virtue,	serving	as	a
Christian	Role	Model	(1	Timothy	4:12	KJ)	both	in	and	out	of	school..
            (Luke	6:40	KJ).
3 Be	role	models	in	their	judgment,	dignity,	respect	and	Christian	living.	This
includes,	but	is	not	limited	to,	refraining	from	such	activities	as	the	use	of
illicit	drugs	or	vulgar	and	profane	language.	(Colossians	3:17	KJ,	Titus	2:7-8
            KJ,	1	Thessalonians.	2:10,	5:18	and	22-23	KJ,	and	James	3:17-18).
       4. Accept	the	Academy	interpretation	of	Biblical	standards	for	the
student’s	abstinence	from	sexual	behavior.	Students	acknowledge
that	these	behaviors	are	grounds	for	discipline	or	dismissal. (Romans
            12:1-2	KJ,	1	Cor.6:9-20	KJ,	Ephesians	4:1-11,	5:3-5	KJ,	1	Thessalonians
            4:3-8	KJ,	1	Timothy	4:12	KJ,	2	Timothy	2:19-22	KJ,	1	Peter	1:15-16,
            2:15-17	KJ,	1	John	3:1-3	KJ).
       5. Attempt	to	resolve	differences	with	others	(students,	teachers,
administrators	and	parents)	by	following	the	biblical	pattern	of
            Matthew	18:15-17	KJ.

                           Conduct Policies
CLASSROOM	CONDUCT
1. Students	are	to	be	in	their	seat	at	the	designated	time	for	class	to	begin.
2. Students	are	to	have	all	necessary	materials	for	a	successful	school
day. Failure	to	have paper,	writing	instruments,	homework	or	books	is	a
hindrance. Persistent	failure	to	be	prepared	may	lead	to	disciplinary	action.
3. Students	are	to	raise	their	hand	for	permission	to	speak,	unless
blanket	permission	has	been	given. Loud	talking,	shouting	out,	and
challenging	teachers	are	not	permitted. Students	must	respect	the
     faculty	at	all	times.
4. Students	must	get	permission	from	their	teacher	before	leaving	their
desk	or	room. Students	must	also	get	permission	from	the	office
before	departing	school	during	school	hours	and	be	signed	out	by	a
     parent/guardian.
5. Students	are	not	to	sit	on	desktops	or	lean	back	in	chairs	or	desks	at	any	time.
6. Sudents	are	not	to	write	on	chalkboards,	unless	directed	to	do	so	by	the	teacher.
7. Students	are	to	use	their	time	wisely	and	put	forth	their	very	best	effort.
8. Students	are	to	be	kind	in	word	and	deed	to	one	another.
9. Personal	grooming	in	class	is	not	permitted	(e.g.,	combing	hair,
     cutting	fingernails,	etc.).
10.	When	running	errands	to	other	rooms,	enter	without	knocking	and
quietly	stand	until	recognized	by	the	teacher.
11. During	assemblies	and	field	trips,	the	rules	of	the	classroom	are	in	effect.
DISCIPLINE
The	Headmaster	and	Principal	retain	the	right	and	privilege	to	issue	penalties
for	acts	of	discipline	not	specifically	stated	herein	and	to	alter	any	penalties
considered	necessary. Furthermore,	the	Headmaster	and	Principal	reserve
the	right	to	amend	any	provision	in	this	handbook	(except	for	the	provision
requiring	Christian	Conciliation,	Mediation	and	Binding	Arbitration)	that	they
deem	to	be	in	the	best	interest	of	the	educational	process.
The	Jericho	Christian	Academy	Disciplinary	Policy	can	be	found	in	the	Policy
Section	of	this	Handbook. This	policy	provides	detailed	information	about
disciplinary	measures.

       SECONDARY SCHOOL DETENTION
       Actions	That	Warrant	Detention:
       1. Acts	of	minor	disrespect	such	as	facial,	vocal,	or	physical	reactions.
       2. Dishonesty,	lies,	or	deceit.
       3. Gum	chewing

       12.	Does	homework	in	another	subject	during	class
       13.	Does	not	complete	a	homework	assignment

       SUSPENSION
Students	will	be	suspended	(or	expelled)	for	major	offenses	such
as	fighting,	continuous	horseplay,	leaving	school	property	without
permission,	abusive	language,	stealing,	disrespect	to	faculty,	destruction
of	school	property,	possession	of	alcohol,	weapons,	drugs	or	drug
related	paraphernalia,	truancy	or	continuous	disregard	for	school	rules.
Suspension	can	range	from	1-5	days.
Parents	of	students	who	have	been	suspended	from	school	are	urged	to
keep	students	at	home	and	work	on	daily	assignments. It	is	not	to	be	a
vacation. When	suspended	from	school,	that	student	may	be	placed	on
Disciplinary	Probation	for	a	grading	period. Disciplinary
Probation	will	carry	the	same	penalty	as	Academic	Probation. A	suspension
is	a	drastic	measure	to	let	the	student	and parent(s)	know	that	he/she	is	on
the	verge	of	expulsion,	unless	a	change	in	behavior	is	seen. The	student	will
receive	a	zero	for	any	test	or	quiz	administered	during	the	suspension	period.

A	student	may	be	expelled	from	school	at	any	time,	if	found	to	be	out	of
harmony	with	the	rules	and	policies	of	the	school. Decisions	in	these	matters
are	the	full	responsibility	of	the	administration. Expelled	students	will	not
be	eligible	for	readmission,	until	at	least	one	year’s	absence	from	the	date	of
expulsion.
STUDENT LOCKERS
Lockers	are	the	property	of	the	school	and	are	assigned	to	students	for	their
convenience. A	rental	fee	for	a	locker	must	be	paid	at	the	beginning	of	the
school	year.	All	students	in	grades	4th-12th	will	be	assigned	a	locker	with	a
built-in	combination. Combination	locks	are	generally	changed	each	year	to
ensure	that	student’s	personal	items	are	secured. Students	should	not	give
their	combination	to	any	one.
• Students	should	take	care	to	keep	their	lockers	secured	at	all	times.
This	will	assist	in	maintaining	security.
• Lockers	should	not	be	banged,	kicked,	defaced,	or	otherwise
damaged. Locker	doors	must	never	be	left	open	or	unlocked.
Jamming	the	latch	on	the	locker	can	result	in	damage	to	the	locker.
• Students	are	not	to	decorate	lockers	with	articles,	which	have	to	be
taped	or	glued	to	locker	doors. Small	household	type	magnets	work
very	well	for	holding	small	memo	notes,	etc. No	names	are	to	be
taped	or	written	on	the	outside	of	any	school	lockers.
• If	students	wish	to	change	locker	locations,	they	must	get	approval
   from	the	principal.
• Under	no	circumstances	will	a	student	enter	a	locker	assigned	to
another	student,	unless	permission	is	received	from	the	principal.
• Students	will	be	held	responsible	for	the	repair	of	damaged	lockers.
Any	fee	for	the	repair	or	replacement	of	damaged	lockers	will	be
added	as	an	outstanding	balance	to	the	student’s	account, if	not	paid
   within	two	weeks	of	notification.
• Students	must	exercise	good	housekeeping	in	the	care	of	their
locker.	Periodic	locker	inspections	may	be	made. Please	note	that
the	administration	has	the	legal	right	to	inspect	or	search	lockers,
   without	a	prior	announcement.

 Conduct Policies (continued)
Jericho	Christian	Academy	holds	that	the	Bible	is	the	infallible,	divine	Word	of	God	and	that	salvation	by
faith	in	Christ	is	the	initial	step	in	the	Christian	life. There	is	adequate	biblical	basis	for	the	idea	of	spiritual
growth	into	the	image	of	Christ	(Romans	8:29),	which	is	the	work	of	the	Holy	Spirit	(II	Corinthians	3:18).
This	growth	begins	with	the	initial	act	of	saving	faith	and	continues	throughout	life. The	Holy	Spirit	makes
the	Christian	conscious	of	the	Biblical	demands	for	a	holy	life	which	fulfills	both	God’s	moral	law	and	high
law	of	love	(Matthew	22:37-39;	Romans	13:8-10;	Galatians	5:14). The	result	is	a	life	consecrated	unto	God
       and	separated	from	the	world.
Jericho	Christian	Academy	must	provides	an	environment	conducive	to	the	spiritual	growth	and	development
of	young	people	who	are	not	yet	mature	Christians. A	standard	of	conduct	based	on	the	following	Biblical
imperatives	is	necessary	to	provide	such	an	environment. All	of	the	activities	of	the	Christian	must	be
subordinated	to	the	glory	of	God	who	indwells	us	(I	Corinthians	8:9,	12-13,	10:32). The	Christian	will	endeavor
to	avoid	practices	which	cause	the	loss	of sensitivity	to	the	spiritual	needs	to	the	world	and	loss	of	the
       Christian’s	physical,	mental,	or	spiritual	well-being	(I	Corinthians	9:27).
A	sense	of	the	need	for	spiritual	growth,	in	light	of	these	principles,	has	led	Jericho	Christian	Academy	to
adopt	the	following	standards,	which	we	believe	to	be	conducive	to	the	environment	that	will	best	promote
the	spiritual	welfare	for	our	student. Therefore,	the	Academy	requests	each	student	–	whether	at	home,
       school,	or	elsewhere	–
       1. to	refrain	from	participating	in	worldly	activities	such	as	swearing,	indecent	language,	smoking,
possession	or	use	of	alcoholic	beverages,	drugs	or	tobacco,	involvement	in	the	occult,	gambling,
stealing,	pornography,	premarital	sex	or	sexual	perversions,	and	involvement	in	rock	and	roll
            music,	or	ungodly	rap	music.
       2. to	refrain	from	harassment,	fighting,	violence,	or	threats	of	any	kind	regardless	of	provocation;,	public
disruptions	or	exhibitionism	in	any	form.
       3. Maintain	Christian	standard	in	courtesy,	kindness,	honesty,	morality,	and	modest	attire.
The	selection	of	the	restrictions	mentioned	in	the	pledge	may	appear	arbitrary	to	some,	but	while	not
condemning	others	who	see	differently,	Jericho	Christian	Academy	believes	that	the	restrictions	named
are	outstanding	types	of	conduct	which	are	detrimental	to	the	standards	established	as	its	objective.
Students	are	expected	to	abide	by	these	standards	throughout	their	enrollment,	whether	at	home,	school,	or
elsewhere. Students	found	to	be	out	of	harmony	with	the	Jericho	Christian	Academy	ideals	of	work	and	life,
who	are	violent	to	others	in	their	actions	or	make	violent	threats,	and	who	have	been	arrested	by	authorities
will	be	subject	to	administrative	withdrawal.
In	this	atmosphere	of	definite	and	positive	Christian	standards	of	conduct,	good	scholastic	planning	and
genuine	personal	interest	between	faculty	and	student,	there	is	fine	opportunity	for	development	of	strong
       Christian	character.
I	have	read	the	Standard	of	Conduct	for	the	Jericho	Christian	Academy	Elementary/Middle/High	School
students. While enrolled	in	JCA,	I	agree	to	cooperate	with	and	abide	by	these	standards	whether	at	home,
       school,	or	elsewhere.

PLEDGE OF ACCEPTANCE FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
We,	as	parents,	are	accepting	the	Biblical	principle	to	“Train	up	a	child	in	the	way	he
should	go” (Proverbs	22:6)	and	place	our	belief	in	the	Christian	school	concept	of
Jericho	Christian	Academy	to	more	completely	extend	that	training.
We	pledge	that	our	family	will	show	its	sincere	Christian	purpose	by	regularly
attending	the	Church	of	our	choice.
We	do	hereby	state	that	we	have	made	a	thorough	investigation	of	the	JCA
Experience,	Mission	Statement,	Declaration	of	Faith,	Discipline	Policy,	and
motives	of	the	school	and	do	pledge	to	make	them	our	glad	hearted	choice	for
            the	coming	school	year.
We	pledge	that,	if	for	any	reason	our	child	does	not	respond	favorably	to	the	school,
we	will	strive	to	modify	his	behavior	and	aid	his	growth	and	maturation.
We	pledge	our	loyal	support	to	the	school	through	praying	for	its	programs,	giving	to
the	school	building	fund,	as	we	are	able,	and	by	timely	paying	the	tuition.
We	do	hereby	invest	authority	in	the	school	to	discipline	our	children	in	the	spirit
of	love,	as	necessary	(of	course	this	does	not	include	any	physical	disciplinary
measures).	We	further	agree	that	we	will	cooperate	and	discipline	our	child	in	the
            home,	as	needed	(Proverbs	13:24,	19:18,	22:6,	23:13	&	14,	29:15	&	17;	Colossians
            3:20;	Ephesians	6:1-4;	and	Hebrews	12:6).
We	understand	that	assessments	will	be	made	to	cover	damage	to	school	property
(including	breakage	of	windows,	abuse	of	books,	etc.).
We	agree	to	pay	the	tuition	and	other	charges	according	to	arrangements	that	shall	be
made	and	to	conclude	all	required	payments	on	or	before	the	last	day	of	school.
We	understand	that	tuition	and	any	other	charges	for	one	semester	must	be	paid
before	the	student	may	continue	the	next	semester.
We	realize	that	we	are	our	children’s	role	model Therefore,	we	will	at	all	times
conduct	ourselves	in	a	professional,	diplomatic,	and	tactful	manner,	using	finesse,
sound	critical	judgment,	modest	wear	or	attire	and	discretion	when	entering	the
building	to	confer	with	teachers,	administrators	and/or	even	our	children. We
will	also	follow	the	proper	chain	of	command	in	dealing	with	problems,	teachers,
            or	the	administration.
We,	as	parents	of	the	student	applicant,	do	sincerely	give	our	pledge	to	all	items	as
       stated	above.

                        Disciplinary Policy
Discipline	is	a	more	challenging	concern	today	than	ever. Therefore,
it	is	necessary	to	recognize	that	school	discipline,	both	in	and	out	of
the	classroom,	is	everyone’s	business	and	concern. Discipline	must
be	maintained	in	a	firm,	fair,	and	consistent	manner. The	Jericho
Christian	Academy	Disciplinary	Policy	is	designed	to	help	students
assume	responsibility	for	their	actions	as	members	of	a	community.
When	individuals	freely	accept	this	responsibility,	discipline	exists. Good
discipline,	impartially	administered,	is	not	an	end	in	itself.	The	ultimate
purpose	is	to: (1)	develop	a	strong	character	and	sense	of	responsibility
based	on	Christian	ideals;	(2)	establish	an	atmosphere	that	will	enhance
all	aspects	of	growth	and	learning	of	the	child;	and	(3)	.	provide	a
supportive	climate	that	will	promote	the	welfare	of	the	individual	and
school	community.
Jericho	Christian	Academy	request	that	each	student	accept	responsibility
for	conduct	rightfully	expected	of	a	student	attending	JCA. The	Academy
goal	is	to	involve	parents	in	the	disciplinary	process	because	this	tends	to
make	students	more	responsible	for	their	conduct. Parental	indifference,
to	any	conference	that	is	deemed	necessary	by	a	teacher	or	administrator,
may	be	construed	as	a	lack	of	concern	for	the	child’s	education	and	may
be	prejudicial	to	the	child’s	continued	enrollment.
Teacher Responsibilities:
Classroom	discipline	is	basically	the	responsibility	of	the	teacher	and	is	highly
correlated	to	classroom	management.	However,	there	are	times	when	a
situation	requires	the	assistance	of	the	administrator. Accordingly,	teachers
should	manage	their	classrooms,	discipline	students	and	refer	students	to
the	Principal	or	Vice-Principals	if	necessary. Teachers	may	not	administer
corporal	punishment,	such	as	spanking,	in	any	form. Parents	should	be
contacted	frequently	concerning	disciplinary	problems	with	their	child	in	the
classroom.
Teachers	are	encouraged	to	file	memoranda	or	reports,	with	the	Principal	or
Vice-	Principals,	regarding	students	who	exhibit	behavior	that	repeatedly	or

 Disciplinary Policy (continued)
substantially	interfere	with	the	teacher’s	ability	to	communicate	with	other
students. The	Principal	or	Vice-Principal	will	discuss	memoranda	or	reports
       with	the	student’s	parents.
Teachers	must	report	to	the	Principal	or	Vice-Principal	any	alleged	instance
of	assault	or	battery	upon	any	teacher	or	school	employee,	on	a	student	by
another	student,	or	substantial	damage	intentionally	caused	by	a	student	to
personal	property	of	a	teacher,	other	school	employee,	or	other	student.
Teachers	must	report	to	the	Principal	or	Vice-Principal	acts	committed	by
any	student	at	school	which	relate	to	aggravated	assault	with	a	firearm,
aggravated	battery,	sexual	offenses,	possessing	deadly	weapons	at	public
gatherings	or	on	school	property,	illegal	possession	of	a	pistol	or	revolver	by
a	person	under	18,	and/or	possession	of	controlled	substances.	The	Principal
or	Vice-Principal	will	immediately	report	such	activities	to	the	appropriate
       police	authority.
Teachers	may	remove	from	class	any	student	who	repeatedly	or	substantially
interferes	with	the	teacher’s	ability	to	communicate	effectively	with	the
other	students	in	the	class. Teachers	should	contact	the	Principal	or	Vice
       Principals	for	assistance.
Teachers	may	discipline	students	for	verbal	assault,	physical	assault	or
battery,	and	disrespectful	conduct	toward	teachers,	other	students,	and
other	school	personnel.	Students	who	commit	any	act	of	physical	violence,
resulting	in	physical	injury	to	a	teacher,	may	be	suspended	or	expelled.

Within the academic program, the student’s individual strengths and weaknesses are identified and nurtured in an effort to equip the student with the necessary principles to fulfill God’s will in his/her life. Jericho Christian Academy provides a Christ-centered environment built upon a qualified teaching staff and a Christian instructional program. • 4. 2 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Our Faith Confession I AM SOMEBODY ROMANS 8 DECLARES UNTO ME THAT I AM A CHILD OF GOD. I AM AN HEIR OF GOD. I AM A JOINT HEIR WITH LORD CHRIST JESUS. I AM MORE THAN A CONQUEROR THROUGH CHRIST JESUS WHO LOVES ME. IF GOD BE FOR ME, WHO CAN BE AGAINST ME? THE 91ST PSALM DECLARES UNTO ME THAT AS LONG AS I DWELL IN THE SECRET PLACE OF THE MOST HIGH, WHICH IS THE WORD OF GOD, I SHALL ABIDE UNDER THE SHADOW, THE PROTECTION, AND THE PROVISIONS OF THE ALMIGHTY GOD. IT FURTHER BEARS WITHNESS IN ME THAT GOD IS MY REFUGE (MY HIDING PLACE) MY FORTRESS (MY STRENGTH) AND MY GOD (THE ONE IN WHOM I WORSHIP). BECAUSE OF THIS I AM NOT AFRAID OF THE SNARE OF THE FOWLER NOR THE NOI- SOME PESTILENCE FOR A THOUSAND SHALL FALL AT ONE SIDE AND TEN THOUSAND AT MY RIGHT HAND, BUT IT SHALL NOT COME NIGH MY DWELLING. ONLY WITH MINE EYES SHALL I BEHOLD AND SEE THE REWARDS OF THE WICKED. BECAUSE GOD IS MY REFUGE AND MY HABITATION, NO EVIL SHALL BEFALL ME. NEITHER SHALL ANY PLAGUE, SICKNESS, NOR DISEASE COME NIGH MY DWELLING. BECAUSE GOD GIVES HIS ANGELS (MORE THAN 72, 000 ANGELS) CHARGE OVER ME TO KEEP ME IN ALL MY WAYS. THOSE ANGELS BEAR ME UP IN THEIR HANDS BEFORE I DASH MY FOOT AGAINST A STONE. 1ST PETER 2:9 ESTABLISHES MY IDENTITY – THAT IS – I AM A CHOSEN GENERATION, A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD I AM A HOLY NATION; I AM A PECULIAR PEOPLE. I HAVE BEEN CALLED OUT OF DARK- NESS AND PLACED INTO MY GOD’S MARVELOUS LIGHT. GALATIONS 3 ASSURES ME THAT CHRIST HAS REDEEMED ME FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW AND RELEASED ME TO THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM. IT FURTHER ASSURES ME THAT IF I BELONG TO CHRIST (WHICH I DO) THEN I AM ABRAHAM’S SEED AND AN HEIR AC- CORDING TO THE PROMISES. SOME OF THOSE PROMISES ARE FOUND IN DEUTERONOMY 28 I AM BLESSED COMING IN; I AM BLESSED GOING OUT. THE FRUIT OF MY BODY, MY CHIL- DREN, ARE BLESSED. I AM THE HEAD AND NOT THE TAIL. I AM ABOVE AND NOT BE- NEATH. I AM THE LENDER AND NOT THE BORROWER. THESE BLESSINGS ARE STEADILY OVERTAKING ME DAILY. OH YES! ONE MORE THING THE 91ST PSALM ASSURES ME – THAT WITH LONG LIFE WILL MY GOD SATISFY ME AND SHOW ME HOW GOOD IT IS TO BE ONE OF THE SAVED. HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, HALLELUJAH, NOW GIVE IT ALL YOU’VE GOT HALLELUJAH!
  • 5. Parent and Student Handbook 3 The Lord’s Prayer Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done In earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread and Forgive us our debts, as we forgive those who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, Forever and ever. Amen. The Pledge to the Bible I pledge allegiance to the Bible, God’s Holy Word. I will make it a lamp unto my feet And a light unto my path. I will hide His Words in my heart That I might not sin against God. The Pledge to the Christian Flag I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag And to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands; One Savior, Crucified, Risen and coming again With life and liberty for all whom believe. Pledge To The American Flag I pledge allegiance to the Flag Of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Student Information Cards The following forms must be completed and on file in the school office. It is the responsibility of the child’s parent/guardian to keep the information on these cards current. • Emergency cards • Pick up cards • Medication consent form
  • 14. 12 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Testing Information Various tests are used by the Jericho Christian Academy to help evaluate and improve the efforts and programming of the entire school. Parents should understand that admission is not dependent upon achievement level. Most private schools require a high academic level for lockstep chronological grading. Testing is not designed to screen students that are underachievers; its purpose is to diagnose for prescriptive curriculum. Testing is required before admission and, if they possess age appropriate self control and discipline most children can be admitted. All students take achievement test each spring so that students, parents and teachers may see progress in terms of national norms. The scores also aid in the process of evaluation. A profile and home report will be sent home to help guide parents in interpreting the various scores. Sophomores and juniors take Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Tests (PSAT) in the fall. It is good practice for the SAT. The purpose of this test is to provide an indication of national placement when compared with college- bound sophomores and juniors in the United States. Juniors take Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT) in the spring and seniors in the fall and/or spring. This test provides an indication of national placement for college-bound students. Most colleges use the SAT as one factor in determining acceptance. Students who desire to go to college and score well on the SAT may likely be accepted at the college of their choice. The SAT may be taken more than once, and most students improve their scores when they take the test again. Therefore, it is recommended that the SAT be repeated to obtain the highest score.
  • 15. Parent and Student Handbook 13 Academic Integrity Jericho Christian Academy recognizes the need for all students to assume responsibility for their own schoolwork. Academic integrity must be preserved, not only for its own sake, but in fairness to the objective evaluation of all. Cheating in any form will not be permitted. In such a case, a conference will be held to include the student, parent, teacher, and Vice-Principal or Principal. As a result of this conference, one or more of the following actions may be imposed: 1. In cases involving academic dishonesty, a determination of the grade and of the student’s status in the course are left solely to the discretion of the teacher, Vice-Principal or Principal. In such cases, where the instructor judges a student guilty of academic dishonesty, the instructor will report the incident of dishonesty to the Vice Principal in order to discern potential patterns of egregious dishonesty. 2. At the sole discretion of the Principal, Vice Principal and teacher, the student’s work will be rejected and a grade value of zero imposed for the assignment in question. 3. The student may be assigned detention. 4. If more than one person is involved in the cheating, the same penalty will be assigned to all parties concerned. Please note that students who allow their papers to be copied are considered to be cheating. 5. In case of cheating, which involves classroom disruption, the administration will impose a penalty of suspension. 6. The theft of teacher materials of any type will result in disciplinary action. 7. If a student forges the signature(s) of staff members or parent(s), or modifies a school document, the student will confer with an administrator. The penalty will include detention and /or suspension from 1 to 10 days. It should be noted that in an examination setting, any behavior not directly related to taking of the examination could be construed as cheating. Students are cautioned not to risk the accusation of cheating and its consequences by talking, turning around, or placing their own exam to be observed by others, etc.
  • 16. 14 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Access to Technology/Internet Jericho Christian Academy has made an attempt to allow access to the Internet to all students through technology for educational purposes. The Academy goal is for students to learn and apply technology as a tool to access, process, and distribute information. Before students are allowed access to the Academy’s technology, each must sign, along with their parent(s), the Responsible Computer System and Internet Use Agreements. It should be understood that in signing the Internet Use Agreement, the student agrees to follow all rules and regulations regarding the use of technology, as set forth in the Jericho Christian Academy Computer System and Internet Usage Plan, or suffer disciplinary consequences. The Jericho Christian Academy Computer System and Internet Usage Plan will be distributed to students for their signature at the beginning of each school year.
  • 17. Parent and Student Handbook 15 Financial Policy Students accepted for admission are expected to remain in school for the entire year. Parents or guardians are held responsible for paying the entire year’s tuition. There are no refunds on tuition for early withdrawal. There can also be no tuition refunds due to illness, vacation, holidays, relocations, or unforeseen inclement weather, which causes state emergencies, and bus transportation or other services to be suspended. A charge of $25 will be made for any returned checks. It is expected that returned checks will be reimbursed IMMEDIATELY with a cashier’s check, money order or certified funds. If one (1) bad check (on an account) is received, a cashier’s check, money order or certified funds must be used to make all further payments on that account. If the tuition payment has not been received ten (10) days after the due date, a $25 dollar late charge will be added to the amount due and become a part of the student’s tuition payment. After the payment is ten (10) days past due, all tuition payments must be in the form of cash, cashier’s check, money order or certified funds. If the tuition payment is late three (3) or more times during the academic year, the parent, guardian or responsible party must agree to participate in an automatic payroll deduction plan or to pay the full balance of the tuition no later than the next scheduled tuition payment due date. Removing Students From Class Because of the Nonpayment of Tuition If a student’s tuition payment becomes fifteen (15) days past due, date, the student will not be allowed to attend class. Parents and Guardians are requested to refrain from sending students to school until the past due amount of the tuition is paid in full. If a student is sent to school after the student’s tuition becomes fifteen (15) days past due, the student may be removed from the classroom and instructed not to return until the tuition is paid in full. The student will be permitted to take examinations only after the student’s account has been paid in full.
  • 18. 16 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Financial Policy (continued) Effect of Withdrawal on Tuition All students are enrolled for an enrollment period of one school year. Implementation of these withdrawal procedures will not alter the requirement that one year’s tuition be paid for each enrollment period. During each enrollment period, it is understood that the administrators of the Jericho Christian Academy reserve the right, at all times and for any cause that they may consider sufficient, to suspend, dismiss, or recommend withdrawal of a student before the enrollment period is completed. The entire amount of one year’s tuition will be required if: - the administration requests parents to withdraw the student prior to the completion of the enrollment period; - the student is withdrawn by the parents due to illness, vacation, holidays, relocation etc.; - the student is withdrawn by the parents for any reason prior to the completion of the enrollment period; or - the student is suspended or expelled prior to the completion of the enrollment period. Fees Not Included In Tuition Registration and book fees are not included in tuition and are neither refundable nor redeemable. Lunch fees, late pick-up fees, field trip fees, and other fees, that might arise during each academic year, are not included in the tuition and must be paid when they become due. Library Fines & Lost Books Fees for library books that are returned late or lost must be paid promptly. Unpaid amounts will be added as an outstanding balance to the student’s account.
  • 19. Parent and Student Handbook 17 In the event a textbook or library book is lost, it is the total responsibility of the student or his/her parent/guardian to locate and return the book or pay for it. The replacement cost of text books or materials that are owned by the Academy or loaned to the Academy must be repaid to the Academy within two weeks after notice is given to the parent, guardian or responsible party if the student has lost, failed to return, written in or otherwise damaged or defaced the textbooks or materials. Failure to pay for lost, stolen, or damaged books or materials will result in loss of library privileges, school refusal to issue textbooks, grades being held or suspension from graduation exercises. Any outstanding amounts not paid will also be added as an outstanding balance to the student’s account. Late Pick-Up, Field Trip, And Other Fees There will be a $1.00 charge for every minute after 3:40 p.m. that a student remains at school. Late pick-up fees are to be paid to the teacher or care provider at the time the fees are incurred. Any outstanding amounts not paid will be added as an outstanding balance to the student’s account. Field Trip fees should be paid in cash to the student’s classroom teacher. Failure to pay for a field trip may result in the student not being allowed to attend the field trip. Other fees should be paid promptly. If such payments are made by check, the student’s name and grade, parent’s telephone numbers, and homeroom teacher’s name should be included on the front of the check. Replacement of Damaged Equipment The cost associated with the replacement of any lost or damaged item or equipment, for which the student is found to have been responsible, is to be paid to the school promptly. This includes the labor cost associated with the repair of damaged item. Any outstanding amounts not paid will be added as an outstanding balance to the student’s account.
  • 20. 18 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Withdrawing A Student A thirty-day written notice must be given to the school prior to withdrawal. If, after a reasonable period of time, the child and/or parents cannot adjust to the rules and regulations of our school, we reserve the right to request withdrawal of the student. No fees will be refunded. For further information regarding the fees associated with the withdrawal of students, see the Financial Policy paragraph in this handbook and your signed Parent, Guardian And Responsible Party Agreement.
  • 21. Parent and Student Handbook 19 Policy Regarding Access to Students and Student Records Consistent with the intent of the Academy to promote the best interests of each student enrolled in its schools and in partnership with both parents of each student, it shall be the policy of the academy to maintain strict neutrality between parents unless otherwise directed by court order. In order to protect a family’s right of privacy within the school, only the parent(s) having legal custody, or a parent or legally appointed guardian(s), or school administration officials and designated school personnel in the fulfillment of their respective functions, may have direct access to individual students and/or their student records. All other access to students must be by parental or guardian authorization. I. RESIDENTIAL CUSTODIAL, NONRESIDENTIAL JOINT CUSTODIAL AND NONCUSTODIAL PARENTS VISITATIONS A. It is not mandatory to provide a copy of your legal custody order, separation agreement or divorce documentation. However, both parents have a legal right to access information concerning their son/ daughter unless there is a legal document on file indicating otherwise. The following definitions apply to this policy: Residential Custodial Parent The parent who has joint or sole custody with which the student regularly resides. Nonresidential Joint Custodial Parent The parent who has joint custody but with whom the student does not regularly reside. Noncustodial Parent The parent who does not have custody of the student. B. Unless otherwise expressly curtailed or restricted by a provision of a court order, of which a copy has been provided to the administrator, the residential custodial parent or nonresidential custodial parent,
  • 22. 20 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Policy Regarding Access to Students and Student Records (continued) or non-custodial parent of any child enrolled in the school shall have access to student records which are provided to the custodial parent or joint custodial parent, upon request. The residential custodial parent or nonresidential custodial parent, or non-custodial parent is entitled to participate in all school activities, including conferences, in which the residential custodial parent is permitted to participate. C. Upon proper presentation of legal documents, no visitation will be allowed during school hours by a non-residential custodial parent, or non-custodial parent unless specific permission is obtained from the residential custodial parent and the school administrator is notified twenty-four hours in advance, or such visitation is expressly permitted as stated in a certified copy of the most recent court order on file with the school. D. In the event neither parent notifies the Academy of the existence of a court order action, neither parent shall be deemed to have rights superior to the other parent with respect to the children. E. In the event the Academy is advised of the existence of an action affecting the family of a child enrolled in the Academy, but neither parent provides the Academy with a certified copy of the most recent court order in such action, the parent enrolling a child shall be deemed to be the residential custodial parent with no restrictions on the nonresidential joint custodial or non-custodial parent’s right to be kept informed of the child’s school progress and activities, and participate therein. II. OTHER INDIVIDUALS REQUESTING ACCESS TO STUDENTS In the event that individuals other than those referred to above (including those representing federal, state or county agencies), request access to a student or the student’s records: 1. All requests for access to students must be directed to the Headmaster or Principal; 2. Official identification must be presented by those requesting access; 3. Access without the proper authorization, as noted in the above guidelines, is to be courteously refused. III. UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO STUDENTS In the event that access is sought by force or in any way other than prescribed above, the school official will attempt to: 1. Avoid any physical restraint, unless an individual is in physical danger; 2. Contact appropriate law enforcement officials via 911; 3. Contact the parent or legal guardian immediately or as soon as is practicable. IV. ACCESS TO STUDENT RECORDS In order to provide students with appropriate instruction and educational services, it is necessary for Jericho Christian Academy to maintain extensive and sometimes personal information about them and their families. It is essential that pertinent information in these records be readily available to appropriate school personnel, be accessible to the student’s parents or legal guardian or the student in accordance with law. This information is maintained and safeguarded as confidential. The Headmaster and Principal provide for proper administration of student records. Jericho Christian Academy advises that all individual

Upon receiving written notice from parents/guardians or eligible students objecting to disclosure of directory information, this information will not be released without the prior consent of the parent/guardian or eligible student. VI. WITHHOLDING OF STUDENT RECORDS FOR NON-PAYMENT OF TUITION In the event of withdrawal, transfer, or expulsion, the parents are responsible for full payment of tuition and other fees. Full payment of tuition and other fees must be made through the end of the school year. The school reserves the right to withhold official transcripts until tuition and other fees have been paid in full.

The academic year generally ends in mid June. Time of Operation • School Hours: School hours are from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students are expected to arrive at 8:15 a.m. • Before & After Care: Before Care begins at 6:30 a.m. and After Care concludes at 6:00 p.m. • Registrar’s Office: The registrar is on duty between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Use of School Phone and Office The school phone is for business purposes and should not be used by students except for emergencies. Only students with official business will be allowed in the office. School Visitations and Conferences Jericho Christian Academy has a policy regarding access to students. See the policy section of this handbook. Building Visitors All visitors to the school are required to report to the office to get permission to visit in the building. They must sign in and receive a pass to visit. This is important for the overall safety and security of the children. Classroom Visitation Parents are welcome and invited to observe instruction in their child’s classroom except during testing. Appointments with the classroom teacher are strongly encouraged, as classroom visits work best when parents communicate with the teacher and make the necessary prior arrangements. All visitors, including parents and parent volunteers in classrooms, must report to the school office to obtain a visitor’s badge and permission to visit the classroom. This is necessary to ensure the highest level of security for our students and staff. Lunches, books, homework, etc. may be left in the school office to be delivered. Unless parents have signed in with the office to work with a particular teacher or on a specific PTO project, they should not be in the classroom or hallways during the school day (8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m.)
  • 26. 24 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Policy Regarding Access to Students and Student Records (continued) Parent-Teacher Conferences Parent-Teacher conferences will be scheduled at mutually convenient times throughout the school year for the purpose of communicating each student’s academic progress to his or her family. Please return the form inviting you to a conference or check with your child’s teacher to schedule this important meeting.

  • 28. 26 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Absence aIn order for a student to gain the most in school, he/she must be regular in attendance. Any absence or late arrival not absolutely necessary will be unexcused and the student will receive a zero. The only absences that will be excused are Type 1, as defined below. Students are expected to be on time in school every day. A parent decides when an absence is necessary. However, Jericho Christian Academy determines the type of absence that obligates the teacher to assist in make-up work. All absences require a note, signed by a parent/ guardian, which state the reason for the absence regardless of the age of the student. The following types of absences are identified: Types of Absences: Type 1 : Excused Absences are those for illness, a death in one’s immediate family, direct involvement in an accident, a necessary doctor’s appointment (or similar verifiable appointments) or a court hearing that cannot be scheduled outside of school hours. A note must be presented to the Office in advance or upon return to school. For this type of absence, teachers will provide the required information to assist the student with make-up work or tests. Type 2 Unexcused Absences are those for any reason other than those specified as Type 1. Also, if the student fails to have a note upon returning to school, the absence is labeled “Type 2” regardless of the reason for the absence. For Type 2 absences, teachers are not required to provide student with make-up work or tests, and accepting late assignments is discretionary. Any voluntary absence not previously approved by the Headmaster or Principal is unexcused. A grade of 0 will be given on work missed during unexcused absences and tardiness/late arrivals. Parents are strongly encouraged to schedule medical and other appointments after school.
  • 29. Parent and Student Handbook 27 Absence Due to Truancy: Truancy is an absence without parent/guardian consent and is considered a serious violation of school policy, regardless of the number of class periods missed. Under such circumstances, a teacher has no obligation to provide make-up work, accept assignments, or allow students to take missed tests. Any missed work may be given a zero grade. If truancy occurs, a conference with parent(s) is required and the student will be placed on disciplinary probation for a period determined by the Principal or Vice Principal. A second truancy may result in withdrawal from the Academy. Early Dismissals: To leave school during the day, a student is to present a note to the office at the beginning of the day. The note should have the student’s name, grade and, reason and time for the dismissal. The expected time of return is also recommended, if it can be predetermined. In addition, a driver’s license or other identification must be presented before the student may be released. If a student fails to present a note before an early dismissal, he/she is still required to sign out in the office. Parental permission, either verbal or written, must be obtained before a student is given permission to leave school. Students who leaves school without checking out through the office, will be given detention for the time missed. If the parents have not authorized the absence, it will be treated as truancy, since an authorized adult must sign the student out of the building. Failure to do so will be treated as truancy. It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with school work missed due to absences. The student has the exact number of days absent to complete missed work. For example: If a student misses four days, he/ she will have four days after returning to make up all work (homework, quizzes and tests). If work is not made up, there will be a penalty of a zero for all work on the day missed. All work must be made up before the end of interim or report card deadlines.
  • 30. 28 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Absence (continued) Make-Up Work: If an absence is more than three days, a parent may contact the Principal or Vice Principal to arrange for getting assignments from the teachers. When requesting assignments, it is necessary to allow at least one full day for assignments to be gathered before they can be picked up. Vacations: Vacations during school time are discouraged. Parental cooperation is requested to avoid scheduling early or extended vacations at the holiday seasons and/or breaks. THIS IS A TYPE 2 ABSENCE AND TEACHERS HAVE NO OBLIGATION TO ALLOW MISSED ASSIGNMENTS OR TESTS TO BE MADE UP. Normally, requests for family travel are Type 2 unexcused absences. However, in cases of unusual family circumstances, a student’s absence may be approved after a parent contact with the Headmaster or Principal. College Visits: College visits are to be made before May 1, during holiday periods, whenever possible. Accumulated Absences: Absences have a negative impact on a student’s grades. Thirteen (13) absences in one semester are considered to be excessive. The consequences for thirteen absences, whether Type 1 or Type 2, may range from the a lowering of a grade to retention or loss of credit, depending on individual class requirements. When a student reaches nine (9) absences, the parents will be notified that the student is nearing what the school considers to be excessive absences for one semester. However, ultimately it is the responsibility of parents and students to see that grades are not jeopardized because of accumulated absences. Reporting an Absence: Call: If a student is absent, the parent/guardian is to call the office each day of an absence before 10 a.m. When calling, please identify yourself and give the student’s name, grade and reason for the absence.
  • 31. Parent and Student Handbook 29 Written Excuse: The student is to present a note to the Office the first day upon returning to school and before attending any class. The note should indicate the student’s full name, grade, date and reason for the absence. The note must be signed by a parent/guardian regardless of the age of the student. A note does not necessarily excuse a student, as in the case of truancy, but indicates that the parent/guardian is aware of the absence. Failure to bring a note upon return makes the absence Type 2 or unexcused regardless of the reason given. Late Arrivals: Students are to bring a note from home explaining the reason for the late arrival. The note should indicate the student’s full name, grade, date and reason for the arriving late. Failure to bring a note will result in an unexcused tardy and the student will receive a zero for all missed work.

  • 34. 32 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Health and Safety Please do not send a sick child to school. No student with an elevated temperature will be admitted to class. If a student has been out sick with a contagious disease, he/she will not be permitted to return to school until he/she is no longer contagious, as evidenced by written documentation from a medical provider. • Emergencies – The school must be kept informed of the locations and phone numbers of at least one parent and two standbys. • Injuries – Any serious injury that occurs at school will be reported to parents immediately. • Medication – Medication (including aspirin) will be administered only with a note from the physician that includes the student’s name, diagnosis, name of medication, amount of dosage and physician’s signature and phone number. Medication must be kept in the health room. If a child becomes ill during the day, parent(s) will be notified by the school office and must make arrangements to pick-up the child. NOTE: The above requirements have been reviewed and approved by our consulting physician. A state law requires each student to have an immunization record on file in the school office. These forms may be obtained from the school office and must be filled out and signed by the child’s physician. No student will be allowed to attend classes until the immunization form is on file. Students participating in interscholastic sports will be required to furnish a physical exam form. IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS State law requires that each child have immunizations; therefore, an immunization record for your child is essential for enrollment. • 36. 34 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Health and Safety (continued) I. Administration of Medication Policy Medication - Medication (including aspirin) will be administered only with a note from the physician that includes the student’s name, diagnosis, name of medication, amount of dosage, date of administration, time of administering, length of time that medication is to be administered and the physician’s signature and phone number. Parents must submit the medication consent form prior to Jericho Christian Academy administering the medication. • Request for Medication Administration • Physician Statement of Need • Prescription Medication with label from registered pharmacist that has the student’s name, date and directions for administration. Copies of the medical forms are in the back of this handbook. A form containing the same information can be substituted if seen by the physician. However, the parent must continue to sign the Request for Medication Administration Form. A. Short Term (up to 10 days) - The above medication procedures are to be utilized. B. Long Term (throughout the school year) - The above medication procedures are to be utilized. Parents must also confirm that the medication has not exceeded the expiration date. Medication that has exceeded the expiration date will not be administered. Medication that is not picked up at the end of the year will be discarded. C. Labeled Medication Required - The school will not receive any prescription medication unless a registered pharmacist labels the container to include the student’s name, date and directions for administering. CHILD ABUSE REPORTING As required by law, employees of Jericho Christian Academy must report child abuse to the appropriate authorities. The law provides that suspected child abuse or neglect shall be reported in accordance with the provisions of Family Law Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland. This reporting requirement prevails over other laws requiring confidentiality.
  • 37. Parent and Student Handbook 35 As a result, any teacher or other staff member who has reason to believe that a child in the school is the victim of any form of child abuse or if there is a reasonable suspicion of physical abuse, sexual abuse, or child neglect, the teacher or staff member is required by law to report that suspicion to the local law enforcement agency or the Department of Social Services. In this very serious and legally narrow area, the school will not contact parents in advance of making a report to authorities. The law also makes staff members immune from civil liability or criminal penalty based on a report of suspected child abuse. EMERGENCY PROCEDURE Crises and emergencies happen suddenly and frequently without much warning. The best preparation for them is to be ready to make the decisions necessary to ensure that students and staff are safe and properly protected. The following paragraphs present the actions and decisions that will be a part of the response to any emergency. STORM DRILLS AND ALERTS 1. Storm Drills will be held twice a year. 2. All students will go to their assigned rooms when there is a drill or an actual alert. 3. Everyone will be notified of a drill or actual alert by the P.A. system. 4. • 43. Parent and Student Handbook 41 RETENTION POLICY It is our goal at Jericho Christian Academy to teach each child according to his/ her individual ability. Placement will be made according to the results of the standardized testing and evaluation, and each child should be expected to do well. However, should any student not progress according to expectations, he may be retained. Parents will be notified, in advance, of this decision. The teacher, in conjunction with the parents, will make recommendations for summer school and other remedial action for all students. The Promotion and Retention Policy is stated below. However, the Headmaster and Principal reserve the right to deviate from the policy and use their individual discretion when making decisions regarding a student’s promotion or retention. Students are generally promoted to the next grade level at the end of each school year based on satisfying the following requirements: 1. A satisfactory level of mastery of the material presented during the school year, as evidenced by classroom performance and grades received on report cards. 2. The Academy may grant exemptions for absences not exceeding 15 days, if documentation for an extended illness under a physician’s care is submitted. Of course, the student must meet an academic grade level requirement by completing all assignments at home during the absence. Sudents can be considered for retention in their current grade based upon the following criteria: 1. The student is considerably below grade level in two or more academic subject areas. 2. The student has marginal or failing grades in three or more academic subject areas (reading, writing, spelling, math, science, history, or health). 3. The student has an excessive number of absences, either excused or unexcused, that have adversely impacted his or her academic progress. 4. The parent and/or teacher have reason to believe the student is not academically and/or socially prepared for the subsequent grade level.

  • 47. Parent and Student Handbook 45 EXPULSION A student may be expelled from school at any time, if found to be out of harmony with the rules and policies of the school. Decisions in these matters are the full responsibility of the administration. Expelled students will not be eligible for readmission, until at least one year’s absence from the date of expulsion. STUDENT LOCKERS Lockers are the property of the school and are assigned to students for their convenience. A rental fee for a locker must be paid at the beginning of the school year. All students in grades 4th-12th will be assigned a locker with a built-in combination. Combination locks are generally changed each year to ensure that student’s personal items are secured. Periodic locker inspections may be made. Please note that the administration has the legal right to inspect or search lockers, without a prior announcement.
  • 48. 46 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Conduct Policies (continued) Jericho Christian Academy holds that the Bible is the infallible, divine Word of God and that salvation by faith in Christ is the initial step in the Christian life. There is adequate biblical basis for the idea of spiritual growth into the image of Christ (Romans 8:29), which is the work of the Holy Spirit (II Corinthians 3:18). This growth begins with the initial act of saving faith and continues throughout life. The Holy Spirit makes the Christian conscious of the Biblical demands for a holy life which fulfills both God’s moral law and high law of love (Matthew 22:37-39; Romans 13:8-10; Galatians 5:14). The result is a life consecrated unto God and separated from the world. Jericho Christian Academy must provides an environment conducive to the spiritual growth and development of young people who are not yet mature Christians. A standard of conduct based on the following Biblical imperatives is necessary to provide such an environment. All of the activities of the Christian must be subordinated to the glory of God who indwells us (I Corinthians 8:9, 12-13, 10:32). The Christian will endeavor to avoid practices which cause the loss of sensitivity to the spiritual needs to the world and loss of the Christian’s physical, mental, or spiritual well-being (I Corinthians 9:27). A sense of the need for spiritual growth, in light of these principles, has led Jericho Christian Academy to adopt the following standards, which we believe to be conducive to the environment that will best promote the spiritual welfare for our student. Therefore, the Academy requests each student – whether at home, school, or elsewhere – 1. to refrain from participating in worldly activities such as swearing, indecent language, smoking, possession or use of alcoholic beverages, drugs or tobacco, involvement in the occult, gambling, stealing, pornography, premarital sex or sexual perversions, and involvement in rock and roll music, or ungodly rap music. 2. to refrain from harassment, fighting, violence, or threats of any kind regardless of provocation;, public disruptions or exhibitionism in any form. 3. Maintain Christian standard in courtesy, kindness, honesty, morality, and modest attire. The selection of the restrictions mentioned in the pledge may appear arbitrary to some, but while not condemning others who see differently, Jericho Christian Academy believes that the restrictions named are outstanding types of conduct which are detrimental to the standards established as its objective. Students are expected to abide by these standards throughout their enrollment, whether at home, school, or elsewhere. Students found to be out of harmony with the Jericho Christian Academy ideals of work and life, who are violent to others in their actions or make violent threats, and who have been arrested by authorities will be subject to administrative withdrawal. In this atmosphere of definite and positive Christian standards of conduct, good scholastic planning and genuine personal interest between faculty and student, there is fine opportunity for development of strong Christian character. I have read the Standard of Conduct for the Jericho Christian Academy Elementary/Middle/High School students. While enrolled in JCA, I agree to cooperate with and abide by these standards whether at home, school, or elsewhere. ______________________________________________________________ __________________________ Student Date As a parent, I have read the Standard of Conduct. • 52. 50 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Conduct Policies (continued) PLEDGE OF ACCEPTANCE FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS We, as parents, are accepting the Biblical principle to “Train up a child in the way he should go” (Proverbs 22:6) and place our belief in the Christian school concept of Jericho Christian Academy to more completely extend that training. We pledge that our family will show its sincere Christian purpose by regularly attending the Church of our choice. We do hereby state that we have made a thorough investigation of the JCA Experience, Mission Statement, Declaration of Faith, Discipline Policy, and motives of the school and do pledge to make them our glad hearted choice for the coming school year. We pledge that, if for any reason our child does not respond favorably to the school, we will strive to modify his behavior and aid his growth and maturation. We pledge our loyal support to the school through praying for its programs, giving to the school building fund, as we are able, and by timely paying the tuition. We do hereby invest authority in the school to discipline our children in the spirit of love, as necessary (of course this does not include any physical disciplinary measures). We further agree that we will cooperate and discipline our child in the home, as needed (Proverbs 13:24, 19:18, 22:6, 23:13 & 14, 29:15 & 17; Colossians 3:20; Ephesians 6:1-4; and Hebrews 12:6). We agree to pay the tuition and other charges according to arrangements that shall be made and to conclude all required payments on or before the last day of school. We understand that tuition and any other charges for one semester must be paid before the student may continue the next semester. We realize that we are our children’s role model Therefore, we will at all times conduct ourselves in a professional, diplomatic, and tactful manner, using finesse, sound critical judgment, modest wear or attire and discretion when entering the building to confer with teachers, administrators and/or even our children. We will also follow the proper chain of command in dealing with problems, teachers, or the administration. • 53. Parent and Student Handbook 51 Disciplinary Policy Discipline is a more challenging concern today than ever. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize that school discipline, both in and out of the classroom, is everyone’s business and concern. Discipline must be maintained in a firm, fair, and consistent manner. The Jericho Christian Academy Disciplinary Policy is designed to help students assume responsibility for their actions as members of a community. When individuals freely accept this responsibility, discipline exists. Good discipline, impartially administered, is not an end in itself. The ultimate purpose is to: (1) develop a strong character and sense of responsibility based on Christian ideals; (2) establish an atmosphere that will enhance all aspects of growth and learning of the child; and (3) . provide a supportive climate that will promote the welfare of the individual and school community. Jericho Christian Academy request that each student accept responsibility for conduct rightfully expected of a student attending JCA. The Academy goal is to involve parents in the disciplinary process because this tends to make students more responsible for their conduct. Parental indifference, to any conference that is deemed necessary by a teacher or administrator, may be construed as a lack of concern for the child’s education and may be prejudicial to the child’s continued enrollment. Teacher Responsibilities: Classroom discipline is basically the responsibility of the teacher and is highly correlated to classroom management. However, there are times when a situation requires the assistance of the administrator. Accordingly, teachers should manage their classrooms, discipline students and refer students to the Principal or Vice-Principals if necessary. Teachers may not administer corporal punishment, such as spanking, in any form. Parents should be contacted frequently concerning disciplinary problems with their child in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to file memoranda or reports, with the Principal or Vice- Principals, regarding students who exhibit behavior that repeatedly or
  • 54. 52 Prayer, Stewardship, and Accountability Disciplinary Policy (continued) substantially interfere with the teacher’s ability to communicate with other students. The Principal or Vice-Principal will discuss memoranda or reports with the student’s parents. Teachers must report to the Principal or Vice-Principal any alleged instance of assault or battery upon any teacher or school employee, on a student by another student, or substantial damage intentionally caused by a student to personal property of a teacher, other school employee, or other student. Teachers must report to the Principal or Vice-Principal acts committed by any student at school which relate to aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery, sexual offenses, possessing deadly weapons at public gatherings or on school property, illegal possession of a pistol or revolver by a person under 18, and/or possession of controlled substances. The Principal or Vice-Principal will immediately report such activities to the appropriate police authority. Teachers may remove from class any student who repeatedly or substantially interferes with the teacher’s ability to communicate effectively with the other students in the class. Teachers should contact the Principal or Vice Principals for assistance. Teachers may discipline students for verbal assault, physical assault or battery, and disrespectful conduct toward teachers, other students, and other school personnel. Students who commit any act of physical violence, resulting in physical injury to a teacher, may be suspended or expelled. Teachers should attempt to address discipline problems directly with the student, prior to referring the student to another individual. However, if the teacher is unable to resolve the problem, or if the infraction is such that it requires administrative notification, the teacher should contact the Principal or Vice-Principal.
  • 55. Parent and Student Handbook 53 Student Responsibilities Jericho Christian Academy has adopted the following school-wide rules for students: 1. Follow directions. 2. Walk quietly throughout the building. No talking in the hallways. 3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 4. Act and speak kindly. 5. Respect the rights and property of others. Procedures and consequences for student misbehavior will be as follows: Step 1: Student will receive a warning concerning inappropriate behavior as it applies to the Academy’s rules. Step 2: Student may be moved to another part of the room or to another designated time-out area. Step 3: If misbehavior persists, a disciplinary referral will be sent to the office. The Principal or Vice-Principal will speak with the child and the child may be required to call his/her parent via the telephone to report their misbehavior. Other consequences may be loss of recess time, in or out of school suspension, or expelled from the Academy. The determination of the disciplinary action taken is at the sole discretion of the Headmaster, Principal or Vice-Principals. Step 4: A disciplinary referral (cumulative) may result in the student receiving loss of recess, after-school detention (grades 7th-12th), or suspension for a time deemed appropriate by the Principal or Vice- Principal. The student may also be referred to the School Counselor, Health Nurse, or other persons designated by the Administration. Step 5: Students demonstrating serious behavioral problems, that endanger the safety of other students or staff members and/or make the classroom intolerable, will be immediately referred to the Vice Principals or Principal. The consequences of these serious behavioral problems may be suspension or expulsion.
