When differences lead to greater
status, power or privilege for some
groups over the other it is called
Social Stratification.
3. SOCIAL MOBILITY
is the movement of individuals or groups in social
standing social position.
It may refer to classes, ethnic groups, or entire
nations, and may measure health status, literacy,
or education but more commonly it refers to
individuals or families, and their change in
income.
It also typically refers to vertical mobility
movement of individuals or groups up (or down)
from one socio-economic level to another, often by
changing jobs or marriage;
but can also refer to horizontal mobility
movement from one position to another within
the same social level.

5. HOW DOES SOCIAL STRATIFICATION AND
SOCIAL MOBILITY RELATED?

categories that develop into
social group together with
status and their equivalent

7. TYPES OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION
Caste
Stratification system in which people are assigned to the
social group (caste) of their parents. Their affiliation
entails specific rights and duties and determines their
lifestyle, occupational choices, wealth, and prestige.
· Estate
Stratification system based on legal and customary
distinctions between a group that possesses land and
power by virtue of noble birth, and a group that works
for the first group in exchange for land and protection.
· Class
refers to a group of people with similar levels of wealth,
influence, and status.

Middle Class, Lower Class, Working Class, Upper Class
8. TYPES OF SOCIAL MOBILITY
Inter-generational Social Mobility
describes a change in social standing between
generations.
Intra-generational Social Mobility
describes a significant shift in social standing
within a single generation.
Horizontal Social Mobility
is a social shift that does not affect social class or
strata.
Structural Social Mobility
occurs when the societal structure shifts,
inadvertently changing the social standing of an
entire class.

an absolutely communistic, or absolutely
capitalistic state
creates hard-workers, who know they can
improve their selves and their family's situation
through hard work, passion, and creative risk
taking.

14. SOCIAL STRATIFICATION IN THE PHILIPPINES
Here in the Philippines, social stratification is very noticeable.
Wherever you are and wherever you go, social stratification is
present. Sometimes, you cannot notice it but when you look at a
certain thing or situation deeply, you can see that.
The influence of government officials is more noticeable in the
public today. Sometimes, in a simple traffic violation, they usually
involved the name of their known politician to escape the
punishment that they should face.
In terms of wealth, they usually use money to do them a favor and
to prioritize them.
In education, most of the time people don’t look on the knowledge
that the person has, they usually look at the school or university
where the person came from.
in physical appearance, people having luminous skin, tall, and
attractive are given more chances and advancement.
15. These are some basis that what was said in the law that all
citizens are equal was not true because in a fundamental
sense, people are not equal. And these are the reasons why we
people deserves and looking for more improvement in life.
We Filipinos are very conscious in the social class where we
belong. We don’t want to be inferior to other that’s why we are
looking on the other way to popular or known, to gain
reputation and to be prioritized by others.
We are always looking for advancement that we can get only
when we are on the higher class in the society. Even though
most of the Filipino population today is in middle class and
only few are in the highest class, we can feel the influence of
those few who are in the highest class in our everyday living.
This is how great the social stratification is and in which even
in the house of God or in the churches their influence are very
noticeable. But even though this social stratification is
present in our everyday living, don’t forget that, in the eye of
God we are all equal and we are given equal prioritized by
Him. But don’t be stocked on what you are today.
