Is the De Beers HIV/AIDS strategy sustainable in the emerging new structure? How can De Beers have the greatest impact on this issue given their organizational constraints?
Less than 30% of these employees are participating in the programs.CSI = Corporate Social InvestmentHIV/Aids is not only a business risk but a threat to sustainable development. In today’s global economy, a disease that has killed more than 30 million people is everyone’s problem … and every company’s responsibility.Literally killed the population of Canada
Doctors and Nurses are leaving the country. Some mines don’t have VCTAll male hostels.Main Problems with your current strategy are: stigma, coordination, informationStigma – discrimination / ostracized Lack of coordinate effort – government, other firms, and other mines, Medical care is inaccessible – choose between work / bonus and treatmentInformation – credibility – not listening to us
So far strategy is focusing on treatment of people. The emphasis is on the DART (DeBeers Anti RetroViral Treatment) programTreatment is a near-term objective, we need to look at the long term phenomenon of people getting infected.Prevention 30% never tested Not enough volunteers (especially male) to become Peer Educators Peer Educators are leaving the company or being retrenchedTreatment Low uptake in DART for employees, even lower for family members DART is not available to everyone in need (contractors, concurrent partners, children) Dying people refuse drugs even when they are delivered to their door uptake is 30% Communication/Education Peer Educators are more comfortable talking to community members than co-workers HIV fatigue People prefer to consult traditional healers 11 languages, illiterate people, family members of DeBeers employees living in the communities far away from minesStakeholder Engagement Benchmarked against Botswana: low government support No partnership with other companies in the industry No partnerships with pharmaceutical companies Limited partnerships with communities (11% of CSI spent on HIV/AIDS initiatives)Minimizing Impact On Business No good statistics. The decreased prevalence rate is attributed to sick employees retrenched in 2003(?). No evidence of people on ART that are recovering as a result of.
Remove the fear and shame associated with HIV and AIDS by working with the religious leaders, healers, and cultural icons - native people trust them more. You’ve said the same message 50 times, saying a 51st time will not do anything. The message is accurate, you need to change the channel. Give more information about side effects, treatments, symptoms.Coordinate with other companies in the industry, pharmaceuticals, and NGOs to bring out a communal strategy. Collaborate, don’t compete.Create a leadership track for our peer educators to empower them and provide them with job security.A stitch in time saves 9. Use family Improve family dynamics by providing more family homes closer to the mine.
