2. Introduction
This presentation is looking at media technologies used in
the first stage of our project, research
This covers our primary and secondary research, qualitative
and quantitative research data and how we collated and used
our research. Research was crucial in both giving us an
understanding of music video history, conventions,
construction etc and in giving us creative ideas that we could
not have done our project without.
3. Internet Search Engines (Websites)
We used this media technology extensively to research
because, in evaluation, it is the cheapest and easiest to
access, with the largest wealth of research and data.
Ways we used this technology included finding secondary
research sources, finding quantitative data to pinpoint target
audience, find qualitative data to give reasons behind the
target audiences’ opinion of music videos, getting creative
ideas by looking at metal genre digipak/posters etc
4. YouTube
I also used this media technology extensively in
uploading the Vlogs and audio commentaries on the
research that I had studied and analysed.
I did this to be able to use this research that I discuss in
planning our project whether I was at home and school
and so it made the project more efficient. This was a very
valuable media technology used in the research stage.
5. Social Media
Another research media technology we used was Social Media. To create
a music video for a band, you must have a clear understanding of the
ethos and atmosphere of the band. This involved looking at their social
media (Facebook and Twitter) to research their previous album covers,
promotional posters, their specific sub-genres etc which you can see on
my blog
We also used social media (Facebook) to research and ask the record
company as to whether we could upload a music video of the song to
YouTube which they agreed.
6. Wikipedia
Wikipedia was another media technology that I used in my research for the
project. This was mainly used in background research of the band and the music
genre, metal. It gave us important information on the specific sub-genre of
Demon Hunter and their album designs as well as culture which was important
in creating the band ethic in the music video performance. It also helped give us
important secondary research on the audience of metal music (gender, race, age)
and the conventions (costumes and subculture) that was a factor going forward
in planning. Although this media technology research source is edited by anyone
in the public and therefore slightly unreliable it was a valuable research source
due to the wealth of information that we could cross check.
7. Evaluation
So in evaluation, media technologies were absolutely crucial in the research
for our project. The most crucial was internet search engines (websites) due
to the easy and free nature of access, the huge wealth of primary research
opportunities and secondary research sources which were extremely
important in our project from internet search engines media technology.
Media technologies such as YouTube and SlideShare were extremely
important in showcasing the research in an easily accessible way which
meant that we could pinpoint the most helpful research while planning and
use it to create better ideas thanks to this media technology. So overall,
media technology was very useful in the research for our project as shown
through all of the different types in this presentation.
