With ever-growing defence deals between the nations, is certainly pulling up the defence
manufacturers to partner each other in producing lethal and most advanced weaponry into the market.
The new partnership in the bandwagon is between Reliance Defence of India and SAAB of Sweden.
Reliance Defence entered the deal as it wants to bid for the ship-borne UAV program of the Indian
Navy, valued at Rs10 Billion. This partnership will bring European manufacturer to enter Indian UAV
market, where till now is dominated by Israeli Counterparts.
In order to enhance the surveillance capabilities, Indian Navy has signaled in January for a Global
tender in procuring 50 ship-borne unmanned aerial vehicles. The last date for submission of bid has
been set to 19th of March, amidst 2 weeks of extension. Reliance is pinning hopes that the group’s
decision to collaborate with the Swedish firm was intended for the requirements that Indian Navy has
set. With the recent union government’s decision to open up defence sector for Foreign Direct
Investment [FDI], is throwing away opportunities in helms for many defence manufacturers based out
of various countries to partner with Indian Companies.
As per various sources, Reliance Defence got many partnership offers from the renowned companies
across the world including Israeli firms, for collaborating in other UAV programmes.
Market Trends: Analysts predict Indian UAV market is expected to incline to Rs300 Billion in the years
to come.
Indian Navy on the other hand wants to upgrade its surveillance by using UAV, capable of operating
both in day and night or even worst climatic conditions, can able to land with and without helicopter
decks. It has also placed a specification to meet the range, endurance, payload, launch and recovery
systems.
Reliance Defence recently had shown its interest in the Naval Utility Helicopters Programme of Indian
Defence Ministry.
