1. Reason for choosing Ghost Lit Kingdom- you don’t know me
The song belongs to the Indie genre, it is an ideal song to produce a narrative
with complex meaning behind. The lyrics consist of words such as ‘disdain’ this
means getting the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's
consideration or respect also ‘you don’t know me’ and ‘cant hold me down’.
These lyrics instantly come across as being emotionally vulnerable, at once the
song engaged me, as it would be perfect for my initial narrative ideas I had to
begin with. Briefly, my narrative is about a young female feeling this way
towards a parent or family member due to her personal problems for example
using drugs, the narrative then continues on with the consequences of her
actions. The complex meaning behind this narrative is that this particular image
being represented by the young female adheres to stereotypes and
expectations society and especially the older age groups have of youngsters.
Therefore the deeper meaning to ‘you don’t know me’, ‘you can’t hold me
down’ and ‘disdain’ is instead representing how youngster today feel about how
the rest of society views and treats them. However, the positive message of the
narrative is in the end as it will become clear that in fact all the stereotypes that
was adhered to in the narrative become subverted in the end as it was all a bad
dream the young female had. In reality her life is the opposite of the one that is
represented in the narrative. The reason for using this idea for my narrative is to
focus on stereotypes and at the same time play with peoples prejudices and
allow them to apply these whilst viewing the video. Although, at the end the
audience will realise that it is wrong to generalise a whole age group based on
exaggerated and at times biased views that the media portrays. In addition this
narrative makes the audience assume the outcome from the beginning but of
course how the audience expects the narrative to end is apposed, this makes
the video memorable and engaging, as they will be surprised with the ends
resolution. Furthermore, the narrative will also motivate and be encouraging to
the target audience (15_20 year olds) as this video is representing them in a
positive way they may feel it is necessary to make other groups in society aware
of the impact their views may have. The target audience will become enthused
with the video (narrative) as majority if not all can relate to the lyrics and the
overall meaning behind the narrative. In addition, the music video positive
message for the target audience is that they should not conform to stereotypes
and instead prove expectations/stereotypes wrong as this will in the far future
change these views and in turn make young adults more respected and

2. appreciated in wider society. This song is also excellent because the beat and
tempo changes in the song, this allows me to be more creative with my scenes
by making the higher tempo and beat parts more exiting. This song further
allows me to come up with original ideas and at the same time conform to Indie
genre conventions.
Reason for not choosing:
The A@R department- cold hands
This song belongs to the Indie rock genre, the reason for not choosing this song
is because the song and lyrics do not compliment my original ideas for a
narrative. Also the lyrics cannot be applied to a meaningful and in depth
narrative that consist of an overall ideology (message). The song is also slower
and through out there is a low tempo, this makes it difficult to have a variety of
scenes in order to make the video more exiting, creative and original.
Weighty tree- the colour of our love is black and blue
This song belongs to alternative genre, the reason for not choosing this song is
because it is about a relationship between a couple and their struggle/ issues.
The narrative I wanted to create was not about love. Also the song is very slow
this would make it challenging to create a interesting and creative narrative
about love. Furthermore creating a narrative that compliments the lyrics
directly is difficult as the lyrics tend to be repeated and there is not a lot of
variety in beat.
Claus zinger- under the trees – acoustic
This song belongs to the Indie genre but it is acoustic as well. The reason for not
choosing this song is because it has references to a romantic relationship. Also
the song is very slow with many pauses throughout this would make it very
difficult to have an interesting narrative. In addition, it would be challenging to
be creative with the lyrics as it is very bland, it if difficult to come up with a
meaningful narrative to suit the lyrics of the song.
