The document summarizes several genres of photography including photojournalism, social reportage, portrait, landscape, still life, night, wildlife, studio/fashion, and street photography. Examples are provided for each genre along with a brief description of the photographer's style and how they employ techniques like depth of field, lighting, composition etc. Key details about each photo are highlighted such as the subjects, settings, and narrative conveyed.
2. +
Photojournalism
the practice of communicating news by photographs, especially in
magazines.
An example of a photojournalism photographer is Mark Pain. This is
photojournalism/ sports photography as the photographer is capturing the
news of the Olympic event. This photograph may have a positive emotional
impact on the viewer as they feel the happiness the winner of the race is
feeling.
The front runner is the main focal point of the shot and it was taken in a
shallow depth of field to emphasize the Olympians.
3. +
Social Reportage
Reporting social events.
An example of a social reportage photographer is Slim Aarons. The Queen
and Price Charles are clearly denoted at an event in this image. Although,
the picture is taken in a deep depth of field, the people in the background are
out of focus to ensure a clear focal point. Slim Aarons would’ve had no
control over the lighting in this image as the shot was taken outdoors and
therefore, natural lighting was used. Everybody looks happy here and this
may be a key photograph that marks the date the queen went to this event.
4. +
Portrait
A photograph of a person showing their face and shoulders.
An example of a portrait photographer is Yousuf Karsh. Martin Luther King Jr.
Is denoted here in a monochrome effect. This portrait looks like it was taken
in a studio due to the blank background around him. The subject is shown
looking off to the distance which could connote the famous “I have a dream”
speech he is known for. In addition to this, there is a small amount of light
reflected on the side of his face that is tilted upwards. This also represents
him looking up to greater things or expectations.
5. +
Landscape
All the visible features of an area of land, often considered in terms of their aesthetic appeal.
An example of a landscape photographer is Imogen Cunningham. This monochrome
photograph is very different. The shape of the trees suggests it has been edited. They are all
really thin with wider tops that seem to be blowing in the wind. The waves created by the sea
also represent the weather the weather in the image. The textures in this image stand out
from each other. You have the harsher texture from the wood of the trees on top of the softer
texture from the sea. There isn’t a lot of negative space in this image. It has been composed
so the trees upfront are larger and as you look further into the distance, you can see the hills
and can imagine the sea fading away.
6. +
Still Life
The depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of
objects.
An example of a still life photographer is Laura Letinsky. Her style generally
seems to be quite disorganised and scattered. Often many things are going on
in her photography and there isn’t always a main focal point. In this image, she
has worked with simple colours that stand out against each other. Looking at
this image makes me think the after effects of a dinner party are being denoted.
The disorganisation and untidiness could represent how rushed the whole thing
was.
7. +
Night
Photographing anything outside between dusk and dawn.
An example of a night photographer is Michael Kenna. This monochrome
image incorporates the leading lines technique with the railway track. Even
though it is in black and white, you can tell it was taken in the night because
of the mist in the background. Also, the streetlights are on. This then means
mainly artificial light contributed towards this shot even though it was taken
outdoors. This photo by Kenna makes me think of someone escaping in the
night because of the settings denoted.
8. +
Wildlife
Photographs of wildlife or non-domesticated animals.
This image by Stefano Unterthiner was taken in a shallow depth of field to
ensure the detail of the birds are focused on. The wildlife was captured in
mid-action; just about to land / take off. The animals denoted in this picture
don’t seem to be acting aggressive towards one another- but seem to be
meeting at that spot. Maybe due to the cold winter settings, the narrative
behind the image could be the birds searching for food.
9. +
Studio/fashion
Photographs that focus on clothing. If taken in a studio, the lighting can be
controlled to determine the final look.
This is one of my favorite genres of photography because it’s highly
adjustable and I’m interested in this industry. An example of a fashion
photographer is Russell James. Fashion photography taken in studio has
controlled lighting and settings. Studio lights were placed to eliminate
shadows of the subject whilst still illuminating her. A blue backdrop was
also used to match the clothing of the model. This straight away brings
more focus onto the fashion.
10. +
Street
Photography that features the chance encounters and random accidents
within public places.
An example of a street photographer is Andre Kertesz. He has used the
leading lines technique through the step handrails. The composition of this
photo makes the subjects at the bottom of the steps small and allows the
detail of the railings to be seen. This is because it is a high angle shot that
lets viewers of the photograph appear to be at the top of the steps.
