Woking title has made it big because of the
market it has chosen everyone watches and
usually enjoys films and they often bring a lot
of profit and working with companies like
universal to produce some big blockbusters
is why they appeal to many audiences.
The growth of the company relies on the
profit of the films they make.
Although their market position very much
does rely on the money they make being
associate with huge companies like universal
will also make them more well known and
increase their market position.
Working title helped produce the film PAUL
Budget

Box office
$98 million
The film PAUL made working title a lot of
money and will have helped increase
their market position. Most big

The market working title is
in is a very competitive
one, because there is a
huge profit margin if you
create a good film, but if
you release the film when
another big company is
releasing theirs then it
may not matter how good
yours is because people
may go and see the other
film and you are then
forcing people to choose
between movies and they
are not always going to
pick yours.
Two of working titles biggest
competitors are film4 and
studio canal but the fact that
working title have a distribution
agreement with universal
studios gives them the edge
above all their competitors.

I asked for their gender so I would be

see the kind of answers each sex will
give.
I asked for their age so I could gain

In the film Everest the characters are based of a
true story, in the story a woman climbs the
mountain along with more men because the
woman is able to climb the mountain it breaks
gender norms and avoid sexism because both
sexes were able to attempt and make the climb.
In the film Everest a lot of the characters die,
because the film is based on a true story the
producers need to make sure that they have
permission from the peoples family to use their
name and they also need to make sure they
portray their death sensitively so they don’t
offend friends or family.
This is a photo
of the woman
climber.
Altogether the film Everest does a good
job making sure that the legal and
ethical factors whilst filming are handled
correctly. And they portray the real life
people who lost their life's very well.

Analysis of media
organisations
Passive and active audiences
BBFC analysis:
The BBFC which stands for British board of film censors is the UK’s
regulator of film and video contain age ratings like U, PG, 12A, 15 and 18
they are able to give these legal ratings because they are a designated
body. The BBFC contains lots of films and loads of information about them
making it a good sight for parents because they can see whether it is a
good idea to take or let their child see a certain film.
The BBFC is a reliable source as it is a designated body and has also been
rating films since 1912. The BBFC is also a non-profit organisation in order
for them to keep their independence, the BBFC never receives subsidies
from either the film industry or the government. The BBFC consults the
department of culture, media and sport before making any changes to its
fees.
Ofcom analysis:
Ofcom is the communications regulator in the UK. They regulate the TV and
radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves
over wireless devices operate. Ofcom operates under a number of acts of
parliament including the communications act 2003. Ofcom must act to the
rules set by parliament in legislation.
The Ofcom’s duty is to further the interests of citizens and of consumers by
promoting competition.
They protect people from being treated unfairly in television and radio
programmes and having their privacy invaded and they also protect people
who watch television and listen to the radio from harmful or offensive
material.
ASA analysis:
The ASA which stands for advertising standards authority is the self-
regulatory organisation of the advertising industry in the UK. The ASA is a
non-statutory organisation and so cannot interpret or enforce legislation.
The ASA is not funded by British government, but by a levy on the
advertising industry.
Its role is to regulate the content of advertisements, sales promotions and
direct marketing in the UK which they do by investigating complaints made
about the ads and deciding whether they stick to the standard code.
My film Everest was rated 12A. The reasons for this I got from the BBFC.
Threat: There are scenes of moderate threat when characters struggle to safely
descend the mountain.
Injury detail: Frozen bodies are seen lying in snow, and a man has a badly
frostbitten nose and hand with blood briefly visible on his face and arms.
Theme: There are some upsetting scenes when characters talk to their loved
ones, not knowing whether they'll see them again
QUESTIONNAIRE
The questions were very
simple and easy to answer
as the age group was
aimed at 16-20 year olds.

Questionnaire
Distribution and advertising is one of if not the main part of
producing a film. Because if you want people to buy dvds or
tickets then you have to promote your film as much as possible
so that a lot of people take notice of the film and go see it at
the cinema or wait until it comes on Sky box office or DVD.
One of the main and most common ways to
advertise a film is to create a trailer and depending
on how good the trailer is it will attract viewers. The
trailer is compiled with certain scenes throughout
the movie which give the viewer an idea of what the
movie is like and about. So the trailer has to be very
well produced so that it hooks the viewer but also so
that it doesn’t give everything away. But films can
also be advertised by the actors going on chat shows
such as graham Norton, Jonathon ross and Alan car
and getting interviewed and giving information
about the film like what it is about and the release
date.
This is an interview
with Josh Brolin on
the Jimmy Kimmel
show talking about
the film Everest
Distribution is very important because the film has to make it to
the cinema, sky box office and DVD to be a successful film and
to attempt to make profit. These are examples of big companies
that specialise in distribution.

When I first saw the trailer for this film I was instantly excited and new
that I needed to go and see it. This was most likely because of my
interests in mountain climbing and my curiosity in Mount Everest.
After looking forward to this film for a while I am happy to say I was
not disappointed as the film turned out to be not only a very
entertaining and action packed story but a very thrilling and emotional
one.

I also believe that the fact that it was based on a true
story really helped with the emotional factor of the
film and made it easier to portray to the audience.
The main cast for this film consisted of Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal
and Kiera Knightley. 3 weeks prior to watching Everest I watched a
film called Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the main character
he performed so well that when I saw his name in the cast for Everest
it made me want to watch it even more.

From watching the film I can safely say that the actors who played
the real life people who lost their life’s on Everest did the legacy
proud and made it a fantastic film for the viewers to enjoy.
Throughout the whole film there were amazing images and effects of
Everest really helping the viewer gain an understanding of what it
would have been like to experience such extreme weather and
climbing conditions.

In the film Everest a range of different camera angles are used but
I remember one scene when they were at basecamp and the
camera was looking up at the mountain from a low angle so that
you could see the peak of the mountain, and I believe this is to
show just how inferior they are and how superior Everest is, I also
believe that by using this kind of a shot it will give a sense of fear
to the audience and create more of an intense atmosphere.

Film Title Mise en scene Iconography Semiotics Connotations
Everest Everest was shot with
an artic scenery and
with lots of climbing
equipment this was
because the mountain
Everest is in very cold
and arctic conditions
and anyone who is
going to attempt to
climb it needs top of
the range equipment.
There is one scene
when the storm hits
and the scene goes
dark to get across the
darkness and severity
of the storm which
would create for fear
and danger.
In the film Everest a
lot of iconography is
used for example the
film I to do with the
biggest mountain in
the world so it
contains lots of
equipment like ice
picks and big coats.
The film also contains
a lot of tents which is
an essential prop
when climbing a
mountain like Everest.
Also there is a lot of
snow which get across
the coldness to the
audience.
In the film Everest they
are always trying to get
across just how big and
dangerous Everest
really is. They use a
low angle shot looking
up at the mountain
peak making the
mountain seem
superior which would
present fear.
Throughout the film
the main character is
wearing a red jacket
whilst climbing this
could be to symbolise
danger.
Human beings simply
aren't built to function at
the cruising altitude of a
747. Our bodies will be
literally dying. Everest is
another beast all together.
Said by Rob Hall in the
movie him saying that
would connote fear into
the audience and create a
more intense atmosphere,
it would also give the
feeling of danger by calling
it a beast as if it cant be
tamed no human can
withstand makes people
think they will die.

Legal + Ethical in
the film industry
Racism
In film people have to be careful that they do not offend or seem
biased to a certain religion or skin colour. For example in a lot of the
scary movie films people would make the joke that the black guy
always dies first.
Sexism
In films they need to make sure they don’t give the impression that
men are superior unless it is a film set in times when that was the
case.
Gender norms
Gender norms are the idea that males play with certain toys like cars
and females play with dolls. In films it is important that the characters
stick to their gender norms because it could be offensive to some
people watching.
Copyright
Film producers need to make sure that all the content they use is their
own content and if it not they need to make sure they have consent
from the original owner. If they do not get consent then the company
it belongs to can copyright strike which could lead to sewing or making
it impossible for the film to be released.
Health and safety
When filming certain genres like action the actors are expected to be
seen doing stunts which if to dangerous the producers will hire a
stuntman to do it instead. The producers also need to be sure that the
weather or environmental conditions are fit for their actors and other
members of the film crew. If someone was to get injured they could
sue the company for a lot of money.
Employers liability
Insurance that protects the company against the cost of
compensation claims arising from employee illness or injury.
Employers rights
The employer has a few rights like to determine whether the person
can perform the inherent requirements of the job. To identify if any
reasonable adjustments may be needed, either in the selection and
recruitment process or in the work environment and role to establish
facts for entitlements such as sick leave, superannuation, workers’
compensation and other insurance.

Active and Passive
Audiences
Media active and passive audience theories
Theories are described as media effects
Passive is easily manipulated, weak minded, gullible, dominated
Active is engaged, responsive in control.
Some of the theories date back to the 1930s
The hypodermic syringe model was used for years to convince us that
media is incredibly dangerous to our lives.
The hypodermic syringe model
Ignores peoples free will
Ignores peoples personality
Ignores your environmental situation
Doesn’t consider the cultural upbringing the may have had
Neglects to consider an individual’s moral compass
Suggest the audience is passive
Inoculation/desensitisation model
The theory suggests that long term exposure to repeated media
messages make them immune to them.
For example exposure to violence could make people less shocked by it
in the future this is called desensitisation.
Problems with the inoculation model
Becoming normalised by the media makes people lose their individuality
People have free will to decide what they do
Ignores changes in culture, e.g. attitudes to swearing change overtime.
Treats the audience as passive
The cultivation analysis (gerbner) long term effect theory
Concerned with the ideological representations on beliefs and values
Ideology= a system of ideas and beliefs promoted by dominant groups.
Doesn’t suggest that media rules are lives
Thinks about stereotypes that have formed from media for example teenagers are
all violent, pensioners are all old fashioned, and that French are all romantic.
Active audience models
The two step flow Katz and lazarsfield 1940s
Katz and lazarsfield concluded the media alone wasn’t that influential in affecting
audience’s attitudes, but was part of a larger system of situated culture.
Received media messages from opinion leaders – individuals who pay close
attention to the media and filter information to family and friends, so people
receive the message without consuming the text.
This model is treating the audience as active and not passive.
Uses and gratifications model
Blumer and Katz 1974 developed the use and gratifications model to
identify four needs that were fulfilled by viewing television. This was
then further developed by Denis mcquail 1987.
The theory suggests that media audiences make active use of the
media in order to fulfil their needs.

Active and Passive
Audience 2
Part 2: audience appeal
Technical and audio codes – the text may employ these
to target an audience. For example, dramatic music and
fast paced editing attracts audiences.
Language and mode of address – this may target a
specific audience and alienate another. For example, cd
cover/video games may use lexis and a tone specific to
a particular audience.
Construction – the construction of a text and the
audience within the text. The way in which a film trailer
is edited, will suit a particular audience. E.g. the use of
stars, voices and narratives.
Context – the placing of an advertisement needs to be
seen by that specific audience, for example, a makeup
advert between the breaks of a soap opera.
Positioning of the audience – through camera shots,
and angles, music, language and mode of address.
Active vs passive consumption
Passive- a passive model of consumption suggests that
texts have an effect on the audience.
Active- an active model instead suggests that audiences
interact with the text to create meaning.
Why we consume media texts
Reassurance – when the text reassures us about issue
and conflicts we are anxious about.
Voyeurism – the pleasure of watching without being
watched. The enjoyment of looking at beautiful people.
The pleasure of suspense while audiences wait for an
enigma to be resolved. E.g. cliff hangers.
Intertextuality – the pleasure of spotting references to
other media texts.
Reception theory encoding/decoding model
This theory was developed by Stuart hall and was a
reaction against the hypodermic syringe model and the
inoculation model which have been repeatedly dismissed
for assuming the audience is passive and unable to use
the media.
This theory is the idea that an active audience has to
decode the meanings within a text; therefore different
audiences will do so in different ways.
The questions I asked were to determine whether the audience would be a
passive audience and not give their views or an active audience and give their
views.
For example I asked about sexism in the first question because it is a
controversial subject that both genders usually have an opinion on.
I then asked how the person felt about the dead bodies in the film and
whether they believe they were presented respectfully, I asked this because
the film was based on a true story so the characters in the film will have family
which could watch it so by asking this question I could gain an understanding
whether people believed they were presented respectfully or not.
I then asked about the dead bodies again but this time I mentioned the visible
severe frost bite to certain limbs of the characters I finished the question by
asking if they still believed the age rating was high enough, I asked this because
the dead bodies and frost bite limbs were some of the factors that made the
film a 12A so I wanted to found out whether people thought it should be any
higher than that.

From asking the questions I asked I am
now able to realise that the person who
took my survey was an active audience
member because he gave his opinions
on certain subject matters. For example
the person gave his opinions on how
women were presented and he believed
they were presented in a good way and
he also gave reasons for why he thought
this. The guy also gave his opinions on
dead bodies and the age rating. Because
the guy gave his opinion throughout the
survey it proves that he belongs to an
active audience.

  • 3. Woking title has made it big because of the market it has chosen everyone watches and usually enjoys films and they often bring a lot of profit and working with companies like universal to produce some big blockbusters is why they appeal to many audiences. The growth of the company relies on the profit of the films they make. Although their market position very much does rely on the money they make being associate with huge companies like universal will also make them more well known and increase their market position. Working title helped produce the film PAUL Budget $40.67 million Box office $98 million The film PAUL made working title a lot of money and will have helped increase their market position. Most big companies that are in the film industry have a high market position because of the amount of money good films with good star actors can produce. • 4. The market working title is in is a very competitive one, because there is a huge profit margin if you create a good film, but if you release the film when another big company is releasing theirs then it may not matter how good yours is because people may go and see the other film and you are then forcing people to choose between movies and they are not always going to pick yours. Two of working titles biggest competitors are film4 and studio canal but the fact that working title have a distribution agreement with universal studios gives them the edge above all their competitors. As you can see I took a nearly even reading by having 3 male and 2 female by doing this I will be able to see the kind of answers each sex will give. I asked for their age so I could gain an understanding of what people aged 16-20 thought about the film and I could see whether it was aimed at the younger or the older audience. • 7. WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Legal + ethical In the film Everest the characters are based of a true story, in the story a woman climbs the mountain along with more men because the woman is able to climb the mountain it breaks gender norms and avoid sexism because both sexes were able to attempt and make the climb. In the film Everest a lot of the characters die, because the film is based on a true story the producers need to make sure that they have permission from the peoples family to use their name and they also need to make sure they portray their death sensitively so they don’t offend friends or family. This is a photo of the woman climber. Altogether the film Everest does a good job making sure that the legal and ethical factors whilst filming are handled correctly. And they portray the real life people who lost their life's very well. Legal + ethical issues in film industry

  • 9. WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Analysis of media organisations Passive and active audiences BBFC analysis: The BBFC which stands for British board of film censors is the UK’s regulator of film and video contain age ratings like U, PG, 12A, 15 and 18 they are able to give these legal ratings because they are a designated body. The BBFC contains lots of films and loads of information about them making it a good sight for parents because they can see whether it is a good idea to take or let their child see a certain film. The BBFC is a reliable source as it is a designated body and has also been rating films since 1912. The BBFC is also a non-profit organisation in order for them to keep their independence, the BBFC never receives subsidies from either the film industry or the government. The BBFC consults the department of culture, media and sport before making any changes to its fees. Ofcom analysis: Ofcom is the communications regulator in the UK. They regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over wireless devices operate. Ofcom operates under a number of acts of parliament including the communications act 2003. Ofcom must act to the rules set by parliament in legislation. The Ofcom’s duty is to further the interests of citizens and of consumers by promoting competition. They protect people from being treated unfairly in television and radio programmes and having their privacy invaded and they also protect people who watch television and listen to the radio from harmful or offensive material. ASA analysis: The ASA which stands for advertising standards authority is the self- regulatory organisation of the advertising industry in the UK. The ASA is a non-statutory organisation and so cannot interpret or enforce legislation. The ASA is not funded by British government, but by a levy on the advertising industry. Its role is to regulate the content of advertisements, sales promotions and direct marketing in the UK which they do by investigating complaints made about the ads and deciding whether they stick to the standard code. My film Everest was rated 12A. The reasons for this I got from the BBFC. Threat: There are scenes of moderate threat when characters struggle to safely descend the mountain. Injury detail: Frozen bodies are seen lying in snow, and a man has a badly frostbitten nose and hand with blood briefly visible on his face and arms. Theme: There are some upsetting scenes when characters talk to their loved ones, not knowing whether they'll see them again
  • 10. QUESTIONNAIRE The questions were very simple and easy to answer as the age group was aimed at 16-20 year olds. WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Questionnaire
  • 11. Distribution and advertising is one of if not the main part of producing a film. Because if you want people to buy dvds or tickets then you have to promote your film as much as possible so that a lot of people take notice of the film and go see it at the cinema or wait until it comes on Sky box office or DVD. One of the main and most common ways to advertise a film is to create a trailer and depending on how good the trailer is it will attract viewers. The trailer is compiled with certain scenes throughout the movie which give the viewer an idea of what the movie is like and about. So the trailer has to be very well produced so that it hooks the viewer but also so that it doesn’t give everything away. But films can also be advertised by the actors going on chat shows such as graham Norton, Jonathon ross and Alan car and getting interviewed and giving information about the film like what it is about and the release date. This is an interview with Josh Brolin on the Jimmy Kimmel show talking about the film Everest Distribution is very important because the film has to make it to the cinema, sky box office and DVD to be a successful film and to attempt to make profit. These are examples of big companies that specialise in distribution. The film also made 158.3 million in box office which is a lot of money to make in a short space of time giving the impression of how successful the film was and will go on to be. 2 WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Film review p1
  • 14. When I first saw the trailer for this film I was instantly excited and new that I needed to go and see it. This was most likely because of my interests in mountain climbing and my curiosity in Mount Everest. After looking forward to this film for a while I am happy to say I was not disappointed as the film turned out to be not only a very entertaining and action packed story but a very thrilling and emotional one. 3 WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Film review p2
  • 15. QUESTIONNAIRE I also believe that the fact that it was based on a true story really helped with the emotional factor of the film and made it easier to portray to the audience. The main cast for this film consisted of Jason Clarke, Jake Gyllenhaal and Kiera Knightley. 3 weeks prior to watching Everest I watched a film called Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal as the main character he performed so well that when I saw his name in the cast for Everest it made me want to watch it even more. 4 WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Cast and their performance
  • 16. From watching the film I can safely say that the actors who played the real life people who lost their life’s on Everest did the legacy proud and made it a fantastic film for the viewers to enjoy. Throughout the whole film there were amazing images and effects of Everest really helping the viewer gain an understanding of what it would have been like to experience such extreme weather and climbing conditions. 5 WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Images and effects
  • 17. COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE In the film Everest a range of different camera angles are used but I remember one scene when they were at basecamp and the camera was looking up at the mountain from a low angle so that you could see the peak of the mountain, and I believe this is to show just how inferior they are and how superior Everest is, I also believe that by using this kind of a shot it will give a sense of fear to the audience and create more of an intense atmosphere. PRODUCTS SURVEY COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE By asking this question it allows me to know what the people think of the film and allows me to compile an overall summary of how good Everest actually is and if it appeals to both genders. These characters were in the most scenes of the film so it is understandable for them to be someone's favourite. Rob Hall is the main character so for him to get the most votes that is expected. I asked people this so I could get an overall idea to what people really thought. Altogether people thought is was not bad but not amazing. Which could depend on whether the viewer enjoys climbing or this type of genre.

  • 23. COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Film Title Mise en scene Iconography Semiotics Connotations Everest Everest was shot with an artic scenery and with lots of climbing equipment this was because the mountain Everest is in very cold and arctic conditions and anyone who is going to attempt to climb it needs top of the range equipment. There is one scene when the storm hits and the scene goes dark to get across the darkness and severity of the storm which would create for fear and danger. In the film Everest a lot of iconography is used for example the film I to do with the biggest mountain in the world so it contains lots of equipment like ice picks and big coats. The film also contains a lot of tents which is an essential prop when climbing a mountain like Everest. Also there is a lot of snow which get across the coldness to the audience. In the film Everest they are always trying to get across just how big and dangerous Everest really is. They use a low angle shot looking up at the mountain peak making the mountain seem superior which would present fear. Throughout the film the main character is wearing a red jacket whilst climbing this could be to symbolise danger. Human beings simply aren't built to function at the cruising altitude of a 747. Our bodies will be literally dying. Everest is another beast all together. Said by Rob Hall in the movie him saying that would connote fear into the audience and create a more intense atmosphere, it would also give the feeling of danger by calling it a beast as if it cant be tamed no human can withstand makes people think they will die. WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Legal + Ethical in the film industry Racism In film people have to be careful that they do not offend or seem biased to a certain religion or skin colour. For example in a lot of the scary movie films people would make the joke that the black guy always dies first. Sexism In films they need to make sure they don’t give the impression that men are superior unless it is a film set in times when that was the case. Gender norms Gender norms are the idea that males play with certain toys like cars and females play with dolls. In films it is important that the characters stick to their gender norms because it could be offensive to some people watching. Copyright Film producers need to make sure that all the content they use is their own content and if it not they need to make sure they have consent from the original owner. If they do not get consent then the company it belongs to can copyright strike which could lead to sewing or making it impossible for the film to be released. Health and safety When filming certain genres like action the actors are expected to be seen doing stunts which if to dangerous the producers will hire a stuntman to do it instead. The producers also need to be sure that the weather or environmental conditions are fit for their actors and other members of the film crew. If someone was to get injured they could sue the company for a lot of money. Employers liability Insurance that protects the company against the cost of compensation claims arising from employee illness or injury. Employers rights The employer has a few rights like to determine whether the person can perform the inherent requirements of the job. To identify if any reasonable adjustments may be needed, either in the selection and recruitment process or in the work environment and role to establish facts for entitlements such as sick leave, superannuation, workers’ compensation and other insurance.

WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Active and Passive Audiences Media active and passive audience theories Theories are described as media effects Passive is easily manipulated, weak minded, gullible, dominated Active is engaged, responsive in control. Some of the theories date back to the 1930s The hypodermic syringe model was used for years to convince us that media is incredibly dangerous to our lives. The hypodermic syringe model Ignores peoples free will Ignores peoples personality Ignores your environmental situation Doesn’t consider the cultural upbringing the may have had Neglects to consider an individual’s moral compass Suggest the audience is passive Inoculation/desensitisation model The theory suggests that long term exposure to repeated media messages make them immune to them. For example exposure to violence could make people less shocked by it in the future this is called desensitisation. Problems with the inoculation model Becoming normalised by the media makes people lose their individuality People have free will to decide what they do Ignores changes in culture, e.g. attitudes to swearing change overtime. Treats the audience as passive The cultivation analysis (gerbner) long term effect theory Concerned with the ideological representations on beliefs and values Ideology= a system of ideas and beliefs promoted by dominant groups. Doesn’t suggest that media rules are lives Thinks about stereotypes that have formed from media for example teenagers are all violent, pensioners are all old fashioned, and that French are all romantic. Active audience models The two step flow Katz and lazarsfield 1940s Katz and lazarsfield concluded the media alone wasn’t that influential in affecting audience’s attitudes, but was part of a larger system of situated culture. Received media messages from opinion leaders – individuals who pay close attention to the media and filter information to family and friends, so people receive the message without consuming the text. This model is treating the audience as active and not passive. Uses and gratifications model Blumer and Katz 1974 developed the use and gratifications model to identify four needs that were fulfilled by viewing television. This was then further developed by Denis mcquail 1987. The theory suggests that media audiences make active use of the media in order to fulfil their needs.
  • 26. WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Active and Passive Audience 2 Part 2: audience appeal Technical and audio codes – the text may employ these to target an audience. For example, dramatic music and fast paced editing attracts audiences. Language and mode of address – this may target a specific audience and alienate another. For example, cd cover/video games may use lexis and a tone specific to a particular audience. Construction – the construction of a text and the audience within the text. The way in which a film trailer is edited, will suit a particular audience. E.g. the use of stars, voices and narratives. Context – the placing of an advertisement needs to be seen by that specific audience, for example, a makeup advert between the breaks of a soap opera. Positioning of the audience – through camera shots, and angles, music, language and mode of address. Active vs passive consumption Passive- a passive model of consumption suggests that texts have an effect on the audience. Active- an active model instead suggests that audiences interact with the text to create meaning. Why we consume media texts Reassurance – when the text reassures us about issue and conflicts we are anxious about. Voyeurism – the pleasure of watching without being watched. The enjoyment of looking at beautiful people. The pleasure of suspense while audiences wait for an enigma to be resolved. E.g. cliff hangers. Intertextuality – the pleasure of spotting references to other media texts. Reception theory encoding/decoding model This theory was developed by Stuart hall and was a reaction against the hypodermic syringe model and the inoculation model which have been repeatedly dismissed for assuming the audience is passive and unable to use the media. This theory is the idea that an active audience has to decode the meanings within a text; therefore different audiences will do so in different ways.
  • 27. The questions I asked were to determine whether the audience would be a passive audience and not give their views or an active audience and give their views. For example I asked about sexism in the first question because it is a controversial subject that both genders usually have an opinion on. I then asked how the person felt about the dead bodies in the film and whether they believe they were presented respectfully, I asked this because the film was based on a true story so the characters in the film will have family which could watch it so by asking this question I could gain an understanding whether people believed they were presented respectfully or not. I then asked about the dead bodies again but this time I mentioned the visible severe frost bite to certain limbs of the characters I finished the question by asking if they still believed the age rating was high enough, I asked this because the dead bodies and frost bite limbs were some of the factors that made the film a 12A so I wanted to found out whether people thought it should be any higher than that. • 28. WELCOME PRODUCTS MARKET POSITION FILM ANALYSIS FILM REVIEW TARGET AUDIENCE LEGAL+ ETHICAL SURVEY ANALYSIS COMPETITORS QUESTIONNAIRE Passive and active audience questionnaire results analysis From asking the questions I asked I am now able to realise that the person who took my survey was an active audience member because he gave his opinions on certain subject matters. For example the person gave his opinions on how women were presented and he believed they were presented in a good way and he also gave reasons for why he thought this. The guy also gave his opinions on dead bodies and the age rating. Because the guy gave his opinion throughout the survey it proves that he belongs to an active audience.
