PROGRESS ON MUSIC VIDEO FROM
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CUTS
FIRST CUT
• The first cut had no colour correction done to it which meant that the footage was raw and was not conventional for our
genre which usually has some kind of coloured filter added to it or manipulation of varying degrees to really emphasise the
difference between dream and reality. This was a certain element that audiences picked up on as it stood out so much on
initial reflection.
• For the first cut we hadn’t included the house clips to clearly show that the protagonist, Johanna was going into a dream
and then coming back out of it at the end. This was something which was key to change for the second cut because the
audience were slightly confused on the narrative.
• The editing when regarding speed was not quite right as Johanna’s face was moving too quickly at the beginning where we
tried to make the image cut to the beat. The audience did not pick up on this but when we furthered our editing I found
this to be quite an important element to get right.
• At 00:13 the red character looked straight at the camera and this did not look good so we edited the clip to be tighter
which is shown in later cuts.
• When Johanna is running she stops out of nowhere and looks behind which we intended on putting the bearded dragon
clips to emphasise the ‘she saw the thing’ lyric but it looked undirected as the actor looked lost and out of character. The
shot itself just looked boring and distracted the audience as it wasn’t seamless. Furthermore, the dragon clip was not
FIRST CUT
• The continuity between the colours pulling the rope and red getting out of the chair was off so this had to be edited
more cleanly.
• The audience feedback informed us that they enjoyed seeing the characters have fun and this is particularly shown
in the studio shots where they are dancing and interacting therefore we could take that feedback on and not make
many changed to it in the second cut.
• For the stop motion part where the 4 colours move clockwise we were advised that it looked slightly off and didn’t
quite fit that part of the sequence so we needed to adapt that slightly whether that be to put it in a different section
of the song or make the cutting tighter so that it fitted the beat more effectively.
• Our audience especially liked the forest scene because it was unique and quirky which many people appreciated. It
is quite different from that which has been made before although it remained conventional for indie pop because of
the bright colours, the messages conveyed and the creative approach.
• We had clips missing near the end of the cut which needed to be filmed and added in.
SECOND CUT
• We encountered some green screen issues with the second cut
which we clearly needed to change for the final one.
• Since the first cut, we added the ‘out of dream’ clips at the
beginning and end of the sequence.
• We filmed the dragon clips and re filmed Johanna looking around
which worked so much better than having the medium long shot of
her just stood aimlessly. The audience felt that this provided a much
better indication of narrative.
FINAL VERSION
• After getting secondary feedback from our teacher she advised that a dissolve transition between the reality and
dream parts would work better because it isn’t such a harsh stop start feel for moving between the two worlds.
Furthermore, it provided more indication for the audience that the end part had more to it as the fade to black
made it seem as though it was finished and therefore the attention may have shut off at that point and the
audience wouldn’t see the final part of the music video.
• A key part of the sequence which we changed, as directed by the audience, was that colouring had to be
changed. We spent a whole doing this for the final cut as it was an essential part of displaying our editing skills
as well as creating a more defined colour palette for the video and ensuring the colour was the same/ as similar
as it could be throughout.
• We edited the video more to the beat which constructed a much more professional music video and played
much more smoothly.
• The green screen issue got fixed.
• We used a different part of the original clip of orange dancing as per the request of our teacher.
• Additional group clips were put in where they had been missing previously. These included the mouth sections
and them being on the floor looking up at the camera and making weird faces.
• We added in more green screen clips for the chorus sections that we had missed out previously.
OVERALL
• We took on board all of the advice and support which was given to us
from audience feedback. We were quite pleased that the general narrative
was understood by our audience although it is mostly open for personal
interpretation as indie pop commonly allows the freedom of
interpretation for its audiences.
• The suggestion for colour changes was the most significant part of advice
which we acknowledged as we knew that that would be one part in
particular which certainly needed attention paid to it so that the final
version had a suitable aesthetic which was consistent throughout.
