Active and Passive Voices.
Characteristics of the voice activate and passive in English.
A sentence is in active voice when the significance of
the verb is produced by the grammatical person to
whom that one refers:
My grandmother gave a yellow spacecraft.
A prayer is in passive voice when the significance of
the verb is got by the grammatical person to whom
that one refers:
A yellow spacecraft was given by my grandmother.
The passive voice is formed with the auxiliary one of the verb to
be and the past participle from the verb that conjugates.
The complement of the active sentence goes on to subject of
the passive one. As in Spanish, the subject of the active one can
remain as subject agent.
The passive voice forms with the verb be + a past participle.
The verb be is kept in the same time of the active one.
The complement of the active phrase passes to be a
subject of the passive phrase.
When we apply the passive voice we are saying the
same of different way.
Tense forms of passive verbs.
Simple present:
Active: The new singer fascinates us. Passive: We are fascinated by the new singer.
Simple past:
Active: The seaplane shook the whale. Passive: The whale was shaken by the seaplane.
Future:
Active: She will drive a lorry. Passive: A lorry will be driven by her.
Future with is going:
Active: The cook is going to send the pizza. Passive: The pizza is going to be sent by
the cook.
Tense forms of passive verbs.
Present continuous:
Active: We are sewing five trousers. Passive: Five trousers are being sewn by us.
Past continuous:
Active: I was reading an electronic book. Passive: An electronic book was been read
by me.
Present perfect:
Active: A thief has sprung the wall. Passive: The wall has been sprung by a thief.
Past perfect:
Active: The child had chosen a toy. Passive: A toy had been chosen by the child.
Active & Passive voice with modal auxiaries.
Can:
Active: You can make an orange juice. Passive: An orange juice can be made by you.
Must:
Active: Arturo Perez Reverte must write a look. Passive: A look must be written by
Arturo Perez Reverte.
May:
Active: Her father may give Maria a new bicycle. Passive: Maria may be given a new
bicycle by her father.
Might:
Active: The house painter might paint the picture. Passive: The picture might be
painted by the house painter.
Should:
Active: Gary should study Maths. Passive: Maths should be studied by Gary.
Model of verb in passive voice. To be heard = Ser oído
