PurposeThe purpose of this assignment is for you to practice your observation skills. You
will be focusing on the language you are using. It can be difficult to use objective language
when we take an observation, but you will want to remember that you are like a video
camera. You are writing down exactly what you see and hear, and only what you see and
hear. This has nothing to do with what you feel or think what you see and hear mean.
instructionsIf you are giving your observation to someone else to read, that person should
be able to visualize what is happening. There shouldn’t be a lot of misinterpretations. For
your 15-minute observation, you will want to include the following:DateTimeChild’s

(I should not see responses to these questions directly, but these are to help you decide how
to observe):What are the children doing?Describe the setting and interactions taking
place.What are the adults in the area doing?What do the children seem to be exploring in
their play?What topics, materials, concepts, or ideas appear to be catching their
interest?What are some of the actual language samples? Record the exact words and
