THIS IS A BAD HABIT.
Perfectionism
It’s commonly understood that perfectionism leads to high quality work, therefore it’s a good habit.
Reasons why it is actually a bad habit:
Silos opportunity for
collaborative feedback,
discouraging multiple
perspectives
Empowers a fear of
failure, rather than a focus
on success and inhibits a
culture of iterative testing
Focuses on nitpicking, not
innovation or possibility.

Perfectionism is a habit of character.
It’s linked to a behaviour.
What makes habits of character different?
- They’re situational.
- To change them, there has to be a willingness to launch (take action)
- They impact the direction of goals, with no guarantee of success

RECAP:
1. Habits are part of our everyday. Habits of character are repeated behaviours.
2. These habits are the routines we take that create our identity.
So now, let’s explore what this means in the context of organizational success.
“IT’S JUST THE WAY WE DO THINGS HERE.”
FRUSTRATING.

Champions don’t do extraordinary things, they do ordinary things,
but they do them without thinking, too fast for the other team to react.
They follow the habits they’ve learned.

You spend time in the morning organizing to ‘get ready to start
your day’ or struggle to find a file ‘you know is here somewhere.’
Your focus is sharpened due to an improved personal
effectiveness to jump right into what matters, not
procrastinating.
RECAP: Keystone habits are behaviour-based habits that take the day-to-day and link it back to core values.
An individual habit: A clean desk/desktop.
And one small keystone habit win that everyone can benefit from: personal effectiveness

Think back to the perfectionism example…
Let’s recreate how this habit came to be so we can learn how to not let it happen again.

Our top-secret not so secret habit to good
habits is getting to know the person behind the
screen. Here’s some fun tidbits about our team
that came from our Lunch and Learn habit.
(the topic was ‘quirky facts about the team’).
REFREEZING
ALL SYSTEMS GO! CAPTURE NEW CHANGE IN YOUR CULTURE.
I spent about 9 months
working wayyyyyy up north in
BC doing forestry work where I
commuted to and from work
via helicopter every day.
But before I decided to go back
to school for computer science,
I almost moved out to NYC to
do photography.
I have no allergies,
except that menthol
makes me sneeze.
I haven’t been to a doctor or a
walk-in clinic in about 13 years.
I can find the bright side of
anything in 30 seconds or less.
I’m a big fan of anime.
Culture plays the biggest role in whether the
introduction of a new habit is successful.

Don’t make more than one keystone habit change at once.
Don’t overwhelm yourself!
Commit your plan to paper - including potential obstacles you’ll face.
A goal not written is only a wish.
Document any and all progress.
Don’t quit when the going gets tough.

KNOWING WHEN YOU’VE CONQUERED
A LESSON FROM FOOTBALL
____________ is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You
don’t ____ once in a while; you don’t do things right once in a
while; you do them right all the time. ___________ is a habit.
