SUSTAINABILITY
Fast and easy service deployment and
activation, enabling efficient ever-
increasing rollout of nodes and services
OPERATIONAL SIMPLICITY
Increasing demand for secure connectivity,
low latency and time-sensitive transport

TDM-PON solutions (e.g., GPON) are highly efficient
for connecting many users in a “best effort” manner
However, TDM-PON is not good for:
High data-rate links with committed bandwidth
Security-sensitive customers (e.g., banks)
Low-latency links (e.g., fronthaul)
TDM-PON is good for residential access but not for business services

Grey optics are very efficient for the realization of
point-to-point connections
However, grey optics are not good for:
Customers with limited fiber availability
High channel-count applications (high opex)
Linear add/drop configurations (prone to error)
Grey optics are good for simple point-to-point links only
Limitations of grey optics

New technologies and applications are creating a
need for more fiber. However, what happens if:
• No (more) fiber available? Leasing fiber is too expensive?
• Deploying new fiber is not possible or too expensive?
WDM enables high-speed connectivity of multiple sites
with just one fiber or fiber pair
