Behavioral and Chemical Addiction Behavioral and Chemical Addiction Program Transcript DAVID COOK: I'm David Cook, and I've been in the mental health field for over 25 years. And many of these years have been spent as a substance abuse counselor and working with people with behavioral and chemical addictions. People can become addicted to chemicals as well as behaviors. Any chemical that has the ability to alter the mood or any behavior that has the ability to alter the mood or is sensationalistic is potentially addictive. Although chemical and behavioral addiction share many of the same signs and symptoms, there are also distinct differences between the two. Two similarities between chemical and behavioral addictions are that they both involve the compulsive repetition, in spite of negative consequences. And they both progressively worsen unless treated. An important difference between the two, and a distinction that should always be realized, is that behavioral addictions are often hidden addictions. There are no urinalysises or drug screenings for compulsive gambling. Or you can't smell pornography on someone's breath. So consequently, because behavioral addictions are often hidden, the signs and symptoms continue along their destructive pathways undetected much longer than chemical addictions. When working with people with chemical and behavioral addictions, the addictions counselor will find that addicts have many barriers along their road to recovery. NICOLE: My name is Nicole. I'm 38 years old, and May 30 I will have five years in recovery. RICKY: My name is Ricky. I'm 52 years old. I've been in recovery for 10 years. GRETCHEN: My name is Gretchen. I'm 44, and I've been in recovery for about three years. JASON: My name is Jason. I'm 32, and I've been in recovery for five months. ODESSA: My name is Odessa. I am 47 years old, and I have been in recovery for six years. SHANE: My name is Shane. I am 39 years old, and I have 11 years clean. NICOLE: My addiction began when I was a child, always feeling different from everybody else. I was ADHD, always bouncing off the walls. And that's when I first got my first experience with pills. And I remember that chemical feeling of feeling relaxed, and I liked it. Another chronicle of death and rebirth would shortly begin [at] Alcoholics Anonymous. . . . . . . “I must have been just past my 15th birthday when I had that first drink that everybody talks about. And like so many of them . . . it was like a miracle. With a little beer in my gut, the world was transformed. I wasn’t a weakling anymore, I could lick almost anybody on the block. And girls? Well, you can imagine how a couple of beers made me feel like I could have any girl I wanted. . . . “Though it’s obvious to me now that my drinking even then, in high school, and after I got to college, was a problem, I didn’t think so at the time. After all, everybody was drinking and getting drunk and acting stupid, and I didn’t really think I was different. . . . I guess the fact that I hadn’t really had any blackouts and that I could go for days without having to drink reassured me that things hadn’t gotten out of control. And that’s the way it went, until I found myself drinking even more—and more often—and suffering more from my drinking, along about my third year of college. . . . “My roommate, a friend from high school, started bugging me about my drinking. It wasn’t even that I’d have to sleep it off the whole next day and miss class, it was that he had begun to hear other friends talking about me, about the fool I’d made of myself at parties. He saw how shaky I was the morning after, and he saw how different I was when I’d been drinking a lot—almost out of my head was the way he put it. And he could count the bottles that I’d leave around the room, and he knew what the drinking and carousing was doing to my grades. . . . [P]artly because I really cared about my roommate and didn’t want to lose him as a friend, I did cut down on my drinking by half or more. I only drank on weekends—and then only at night. . . . And that got me through the rest of college and, actually, through law school as well. . . . “Shortly after getting my law degree, I married my first wife, and . . . for the first time since I started, my drinking was no problem at all. I would go for weeks at a time without touching a drop. . . . “My marriage started to go bad after our second son, our third child, was born. I was very much career-and-success oriented, and I had little time to spend at home with my family. . . . My traveling had increased a lot, there were stimulating people on those trips, and, let’s face it, there were some pretty exciting women available, too. So home got to be little else but a nagging, boring wife and children I wasn’t very interested in. My drinking had gotten bad again, too, with being on the road so much, having to do a lot of entertaining at lunch when I wasn’t away, an.

In Their Own Words Program Transcript NICOLE: My name is Nicole. And May 30, I will have five years in recovery. RICKY: My name is Ricky. I've been in recovery for 10 years. GRETCHEN: My name is Gretchen. And I've been in recovery for about three years. JASON: My name's Jason, and I've been in recovery for five months. ODESSA: My name is Odessa, and I have been in recovery for six years. SHANE: My name is Shane, and I have 11 years clean. FEMALE SPEAKER: Six addicts, six remarkable stories of addiction, treatment, and recovery in their own words. GRETCHEN: My addictions are prescription pain pills and alcohol. I'm a survivor of childhood sexual trauma, so that's-- and my parents are addicts. And my parents always used around me. Their friends always used around me. I grew up thinking that was normal. I grew up thinking chaos was normal and negative type behaviors. My mother had breast cancer, and my mother has other health issues. And she's addicted to her pain pills. I would try and reach out to her for help, and she would just say, you know, go get me a bottle or go get me a beer or go get this. And she would take those pain pills with that alcohol. When you sit there and you watch your mother do that and not help you and not support you and not listen to you, and the whole time I was there I was telling her I needed to get help. I needed help. I needed counseling. I needed treatment. I needed something. In the worst stage of my addiction, I just kind of went off the deep end with it all. I just realized that I couldn't handle it anymore and I didn't know how to fix it. So I just self-medicated and drank, and drank, and drank, and took pills and drank. And some things happened that just caused me to realize that I was going to die if I didn't reach for help. JASON: I snuck into a Casino with a fake ID at 14 and won $1,000 playing Blackjack, and then it was like my whole life went this way. It was like college, that all can wait, because there's no way I can make this much money. So it was just off to the races from then. ©2012 Laureate Education, Inc. 1 I can remember one time I cashed out my 401k, took out like $30,000, went straight to the casino. Doubled that and didn't leave. And then lost $40,000. I think I got the same feeling losing or winning. It was as long as I was gambling. It didn't matter. It's the same. It's the rush. I would go to the casino. And, of course, they'd give me a room for a week or two weeks, whatever I wanted. I would stay there literally. I just wouldn't go to work. And of course, no employer's going to put up with that. I pretty much just lost everything. And I knew it was time to do something. RICKY: My daddy, when I finished high school, he passed away. So that just, that left me, the oldest son, on the farm. So I had to drop everything. There was a lot of pressure. There was a lot of disappointment, and the only way I could .
