development partnerships ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -‐-‐ U.S. Army and
South Korean officials discussed potential collaboration in science and technology areas that
benefit both the military and civilian sectors June 11.
Army aviation engineers play role in helicopter rebuild REDSTONE
ARSENAL, Ala. -‐-‐ The Army has upgraded the OH-‐58 Kiowa Warrior from 1980s equipment to
the most current technology available. With the Cockpit and Sensor Upgrade Program, Army
engineers from the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command's aviation
and missile center are leading development efforts.
Army researchers "supersize" an idea that could lead to massive
improvements in helicopter performance ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND,
Md. -‐-‐ A new study by Army researchers is looking at inserting carbon nanotubes into the
structural design of helicopter rotor blades in hopes this approach eliminates a list of
deficiencies highlighted particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.
Army harnesses sun to reduce casualties from sniper attacks
ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -‐-‐ The U.S. Army is harnessing the elements to help reduce
casualties from sniper attacks on forward operating bases. The U.S. Army Research,
Development and Engineering Command's research laboratory and aviation missile and
communications-‐electronics RD&E centers -‐-‐ ARL, AMRDEC and CERDEC -‐-‐ have integrated and
deployed wind and solar harvesting systems to provide continuous energy .
The 117 girls and boys witnessed firsthand what their parents and other scientists and
engineers do when they come to work at the "Natick Labs," the name by which the base is
known in the area.

Solar carport nears completion, prepares to power up TOBYHANNA
ARMY DEPOT, Pa. -‐-‐ Construction of a solar carport in front of the Mack Fitness and Recreation
Center is nearing completion. The carport will feature a solar photovoltaic array that will
supplement or provide power completely to the Mack depending on the amount of electricity it
generates. The carport will also provide 27 covered parking spaces.

recently cut the ribbon on a facility expected to quadruple its computing capacity.
Focus on quality earns ISO/AS recertification TOBYHANNA ARMY DEPOT,
Pa. -‐-‐ Tobyhanna received the 'thumbs up' from international auditors following an in depth
inspection of business practices, earning recertification in meeting recognized standards for
quality. Auditors from NSF International visited the depot last month to conduct a surveillance
audit of Tobyhanna's International Standards Organization (ISO) 9001, and Aerospace Standard
(AS) 9100 and AS9110 certifications.
