2. • AI is becoming pervasive today, with sw market to grow
significantly through 2022, approaching USD 9.5 billion in revenue
at a CAGR of 36.7%
• Many of the benefits of this evolution require computing
resources at the periphery of the network, i.e., where source data
is produced
• Many companies are actively evaluating the use of edge computing for data
collection, processing, and analytics
• Shipments of sensors with AI capabilities will grow 15-fold by 2023 to 1.2
billion units
• Example of use cases: predictive maintenance, machine vision, healthcare…
• Edge-based inferencing will become the foundation of all industrial AI
applications
• The majority of new applications will involve some AI-driven component at
various levels of the cloud/edge-servers/AI-enabled sensors stack
New trends
4. • Lack of frameworks for the design of novel AI application
spanning from the cloud to the edge:
• Interoperability
• Flexibility
• Security and privacy
• Lack of runtime management frameworks:
• Automatic deployments
• Automatic scaling
• Runtime trade-off among performance, models accuracy, security and
privacy
