Dear Interested Firms/ Prospective Employers;
I am deeply pleased to write this letter of recommendation on behalf of Aaron Elswick. Aaron is
a2O!5 Master of Urban Design graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, and I was
fortunate to have had him as a student in two courses that I teach (Portfolio, Global Practice).
I wish to underscore the fact that first and foremodt, Aaron is completely committed to the
design profession. His studio design projects exhibit a consistent trajectory of growth,
development, and maturity, and his solutions typically draw upon multidisciplinary sources of
research that contribute a timely essence in the making of well-executed outcomes. Unlike
many of his peers, I feel that Aaron has assessed, analyzed and understood his own role within
the context of his chosen profession, and this provides him with a very focused momentum in
achieving his goals. But on a different note, I would also hasten to say that Aaron is extremely
capable of employing flexibility, adjustment, and reinvention in remaking that role as is deemed
necessary in this volatile age of the 2L" century.
In an interdisciplinary art school that focuses on utilization of technology and healthy but
intense collaboration, Aaron has always expressed a unique aesthetic and sense of creativity.
His is a unique watermark. But even more important, he is well-rounded, unabashedly well-
read, and proactive, with a genuine and refreshing curiosity that is readily made manifest in his
demeanor and design approach. These are traits that are increasingly rare. I have seen these
characteristics in Aaron change the dynamics in a room-- or a group of people, and I have seen
them ignite interchange, collaboration, opportunity, and energy within the context of a
discussion, often bringing a whole new set of possibilities to the table. He is an excellent
collaborator.
During Mr. Elswick's tenure at SCAD, I found him to be calm, focused, and self-directed with a
delightful, people-oriented personality that underscores his deep sense of responsibility to the
community, whether it be with colleagues, or at the academic, urban, or global level.
I wish to convey my full support of Aaron Elswick's candidacy for whatever position he may be
pursuing, and I can attest to the fact that he would be an extremely positive addition to any
work environment.
I will be happy to answer any further questions you may have.
Sincerely,
and Design.

Urban Design Recommendation: Aaron C. Elswick
The Savannah College of Art and Design
Department of Architecture
Savannah, GA 31402
April 4, 2015
To the Review Committee:
Aaron Elswick, M.U.D.D. Candidate for the Master of Urban Design 2015 has asked me to
provide a letter of recommendation for him. Aaron was well-known to me before I had the pleasure
to have him in a classroom. His reputation preceded him by the standard of the work he produced
in his first design studios here in the School of Building Arts at the Savannah College of Art and
Design. Over the past three months, Aaron was enrolled in an immersive study for a sustainable
master plan and design project for the Upper Ninth Ward in New Orleans. During this period, I was
able to understand and observe his strengths, his objectives, and his motivations for practical
experience as a design intern in a way that would enable him to contribute in meaningful ways to
sustainable urbanism. I am pleased to write this letter of support in recognition of his abilities and
potential for future success.
Aaron’s skill in understanding connections between diverse but related fields of art and
design was apparent from his beginning studio at SCAD. He seeks to understand and implement
interrelated fields of theory, practice, and discipline in his design process. He reads widely and is
current with contemporary theorists and designers, and often makes perceptive and intuitive leaps in
his design process. His work ethic is extremely robust, and he is one of the most focused,
passionate, and disciplined students that I have known in twenty years of teaching architecture and
urban design. Once he has determined where his project wants to go, he is committed to do
whatever it takes to understand how the idea needs to be translated and developed in three
dimensions. His deep interest in biology and the sciences have motivated him to study biomimetics
and read in the sciences as well as the arts. He is well-respected by his peers and his faculty for the
quality of work he consistently produces. His detail-oriented process results in an extraordinary level
of work; I truly look forward to seeing where his work will lead him as he moves into the practice of
sustainable urbanism.
Aaron’s ranking is in the top 5% of his class. His design for the Upper Ninth Ward proposes
an unusual way of looking at the natural ecosystem and transferring principles into the man-made
habitat. His critical thinking skills were applied with clarity and rigor, and resulted in an unusual but
very innovative program with a master plan proposal that supplied the systems needed. The district,
functioning as a water filtration and storage system, solved current problems while addressing future
needs of the city residents. Critics Ryan Madson and Scott Singeisen were favorably inclined to view

Urban Design Recommendation: Aaron C. Elswick
this proposal as one that merited attention by urban designers of today; his project was presented to
the CEER national conference on ecosystems in the summer of 2014 in New Orleans.
Aaron is an energetic, engaged, articulate young man, and it is said of him that his depths are
unplumbed. He surprises by his perceptions and his intuition is keen, enabling him to view the
world with eagerness and wonder. He is at home in new environments, observing, listening, tasting,
touching all the facets of a world that is in rapid change. I believe that these are qualities which will
help him succeed wherever he may choose to intern and work, and I believe that his commitment to
architecture will endure well into the challenges that lie ahead in this century. His broad range of
interests, combined with his intense ability to focus and achieve, are the right mixture of
characteristics for the complex and interlocked problems that face the planet. I recommend
without hesitation Aaron Elswick to your firm, and I wish this young man all the very best as he
moves into the next stage of his education.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if additional information is needed.
