What is RESEARCH for YOU?
02
The word came from the Middle French
word "RECHERCHE" meaning "to go
about seeking". It literary implies
repeating a search for something and
implicitly assumes that the earlier
search was not exhaustive and
complete in the sense that there is still
scope for improvement.
RESEARCH
03
RESEARCH...
It is an attempt to solve or gain a solution to a problem.
It is a systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of
hypothetical propositions about the presumed relations among
natural phenomenon. (Kerlinger, 19760)
It is an honest, scientific investigation undertaken for the purpose of
discovering new facts or establishing new relationships among acts
already known, which will contribute to the present body of
knowledge and can lead to an effective solution of existing
problems.
Data Collection:
It refers to observing, measuring, and recording
information.
Data Analysis:
It refers to arranging and organizing the collected
data so that we may be able to find out what their
significance is and generalize about them.
Report Writing:
It is an inseparable part and a final outcome of a
research study. Its purpose is to convey information
contained in it to the readers or audience.
04
Systematic research in any field of inquiry involves three basic operations:
WHAT IS RESEARCH?
1
Good research is anchored on a sound research
question.
2
Good research follows a systematic, appropriate
research methodology.
3
Good research acknowledges previous research
on the topic.
4
Good research uses relevant, empirical data and
proper data analysis methods.
5
Good research is representative and
generalizable.
CHARACTERISTICS
OF RESEARCH
Research is a process through
which we attempt to achieve
systematically and with the
support of data the answer to a
question, the resolution of a
problem, or a greater
understanding of a phenomenon.
This process has ten (10) distinct
characteristics:
6 Good research is guided by logic.
7 Good research has external validity.
8
Good research is replicable, reproducible, and
transparent.
9
Good research acknowledges its limitations and
provides suggestions for future research.
10 Good research is ethical.
