FITNESS
Meaning of Physical Fitness
Physical fitness implies abilities such as that
of resisting fatigue, performing with an
acceptable degree of motor ability and being
able to adapt to muscular stress. Physical
fitness can also be functional specific and
emergency requirements.
Physical Fitness
Physical fitness refers to the organic capacity of the
individual to perform normal task of daily living without
undue tiredness or fatigue having reserves of strength
and energy available to meet satisfactory and emergency
demands suddenly placed upon him”.- Nixon
Physically fitness is the quality of the whole body in terms
of its state of adaptation of physical activity.
Benefits of
Physical
Fitness
Exercise or fitness is not just for Olympic
hopefuls or supermodels. In fact no one
never too unfit too young or too old get
started. Regardless of age, gender or role in
life, one can benefit from regular physical
activity. If there is a commitment exercise
in combination with a sensible diet can help
to provide in overall sense of wellbeing and
can even help to prevent chronic illness,
disability and premature death.

Health Related Fitness Skill Related Fitness
Health Related Fitness
To be healthy you should have
at least some of each of the
heath related components of
fitness. If you do, you are less
likely to develop other health
problems related to a lack of
exercise. (ex. heart disease,
high blood pressure, back pain,
obesity).
The ability to exercise the entire
body for long period of time.
Requires a strong heart, healthy
lungs & clear blood vessels to
supply the body with oxygen.
CARDIOVASCULAR
ENDURANCE
Amount of force you put forth with
your muscles
Can be measured by how much
weight you can lift
Advantages: fewer problems with
backaches, carry out daily tasks
efficiently
STRENGTH
Amount of force you put forth with
your muscles.

Ability to use the muscles many
times without getting tired.
Advantages: better posture, fewer
back problems, less likely to tire

MUSCULAR

Ability to use your joints fully.
Muscles are long enough & the
joints are free enough to allow
movement.
Advantages: fewer sore and injured
muscles, less chance of injuries
FLEXIBILITY
Percentage of body weight that is
fat compared to other body tissues,
such as bone and muscle.
High percentage of body fat =
increased rates of illness and
death.
BODY
COMPOSITION
Skill Related Fitness
If you are good at these skill
related components of fitness, you
are likely to be good at sports and
games. Different sports require
different components but most
require more than just one of these
areas. Some people have more
natural ability in these areas but no
matter where your strengths lie,
you can always find some type of
physical activity that you can enjoy.
Ability to change the position of
your body quickly and to control the
movement of your whole body.
AGILITY
Ability to keep an upright posture
while standing still or moving.
BALANCE
Ability to use your senses, such as your
eyes, together with your body parts, such
as your arms
Using 2 or more body parts together
Good hand-eye or foot-eye coordination
COORDINATION
Ability to do strength performances
quickly
Involves both strength & speed
POWER
Amount of time it takes to get moving
once you see the need to move.
REACTION TIME
Ability to perform a movement or cover
a distance in a short period of time.
Leg speed = run fast over short
distance
Arm speed = throw fast or hit fast balls

  • 7. The ability to exercise the entire body for long period of time. Requires a strong heart, healthy lungs & clear blood vessels to supply the body with oxygen. CARDIOVASCULAR ENDURANCE

Some people have more natural ability in these areas but no matter where your strengths lie, you can always find some type of physical activity that you can enjoy.
